I lost 15 pounds in 12 weeks, cheating here and there along the way (or i'd have lost more, sooner). I have never been able to lose >any< weight in my life up until this plan. To those who complained about feeling tired and/or lousy the first week or two: when someone goes into detox for drugs or alcohol, they feel awful too! (but do we feel sorry for them and tell them to go off the detox plan? no!) those carbs we eat are toxins in our body, and we feel tired and lousy at first because our bodies are spoiled and we are forcing them to do something healthy, which they seem to be rebelling against! so they go through WITHDRAWAL, and the symptoms can be uncomfortable at first for some people (the more carbohydrate addicted, the worse the symptoms perhaps?) -- but quickly it's over and you soon feel less tired, more motivated and instead of bloated, you feel light and energized.... don't give up on something good for you, just because you don't like going through the withdrawal period!

It really does work. I bought the book and started one week ago today, and as of this morning, I have lost 10 pounds. I still can't get over it. I'm over six feet tall, and weighed in at 260 last week, and now I'm at 250.
I had heard about this diet only a short time ago from friends and coworkers, and everyone had something good to say. So-and-so lost 20 pounds, someone else lost 40...I figured I might as well give it a shot. I had decided to try eating better anyways, and had cut out the Coke and Pepsi drinking, so this would just be another step. I never would have guessed that my "better" eating was still causing me to gain weight.
This book is definitely worth it. Out of all the diets, supplements, pills, liquids, shakes, and foods I've ever tried, this is the only one that has shown me such a drastic result, all while still eating normal foods. The first week is certainly rough, as everyone seems to attest to. I had several headaches, a couple of bouts of nausea, and general crankiness, but once I found a well-rounded way to follow the recommendations of the book, I've been great.
I drink an Atkins strawberry shake in the morning (albeit, I add a few real strawberries in the blender for a better flavor) and a multivitamin, a normal lunch that consists of polish sausages, or taco salad (sans tortilla), or a big salad with sliced chicken, and have an equally filling dinner consisting of just about anything I can BBQ up. If you can handle giving up pasta, pizza, Coke/Pepsi, breads, and junkfood for a while, you can do it.
When you're ready to start the diet, prepare a grocery list of the low-carb foods that you like, and think about what combinations of food you can make that will offer you diversity in your meals.

So you want to lose weight and take it off. Are you willing to forgo alcoholic beverages forever? Your morning cup of coffee? Pizza? Do you want to spend the rest of your life scraping the meat and cheese off your sandwiches to avoid eating the bread? If you are not willing to do all these things then this diet probably isn't for you. If you are, then you are a saint!
Dr. Atkins would have you eat like a king, and he mentions this fact in his book repeatedly, but thorough reading of the book suggests that you would be actually eating more like a Mormom who is allergic to bread, pasta and fruit. Atkins does has some good ideas in this diet, which is why I gave it three stars, but he takes these ideas just a little too far and the average person will have a very difficult time following this diet for the rest of their lives. Still, the book is worth reading for the excellent information you will get on such topics as diabetes, hypoglycemia, food intolerance and heart disease.
In fact I agree heartily with Atkins in that since adding refined sugars and white flour to the diet in the late 1800s, that heart disease and obesity has increased to epidemic proportions. But rather than counsel us to reduce or even omit the pastries, candies, cakes and soda that contribute most of our "empty calories", Dr. Atkins takes things a step further and counsels us to reduce and even omit entirely carbohydrate foods that are GOOD for us such as whole wheat bread, rice, pasta and many fruits and vegetables. In fact, Atkins would have us eliminate most of the food groups entirely during the induction phase of the diet (10 days) and then only at very reduced levels during both the "weight loss" and "maintenance" phases of the diet.

This diet works. This doctor can write. This is, without a doubt the BEST approach to losing weight and the healthiest way to eat and live. One fella said the diet is expensive. I say, have you noticed lately how much a quadruple coronary bypass costs?
Some say the menu choices are limited? Maybe during the induction diet but Rack of Lamb to Lobster cooked in Butter with a tossed salad and brocolli with cheese for your dinner doesn't sound like deprivation to me. Some say Dr. Atkins doesn't prove his case. Well, that is not what I found out when I lost 29 pounds in the first two weeks.
Others claim the INDUCTION phase (first 14 days) doesn't provide adequate nutritional support for a long-term diet program. They obviously skipped the part (page 100 ff) where Dr. Atkins strongly recommends that dieters take a broad multi-vitamin four times a day and where he suggests other dietary supplements for various concerns readers may experience or need help addressing.
Finally, I commend Dr. Atkins .. his book is written on a seventh-grade level which coupled with the low cost of a paperback makes it available to the masses at a very small price. He also takes the time to explain all medical terms and to make the results of scientific studies understandable to the least of us. This is a man who has helped more patients on a one-to-one basis than any other physician, and he is a man who has taken the time to educate the public vis-a-vis his radio shows and books so that millions can benefit from his discoveries and experiences.
I owe my life to Dr. Atkins. After 25 years of smoking one and a half packs daily, I started putting on pounds and I make a Herculean effort to follow a LOW FAT, HIGH CARBOHYDRATE diet.
