From Library Journal

Dickson's dictionary does far more than define the terms and phrases of the game; many of his 5000 definitions provide etymological descriptions and contending theories, context notes, external uses of the term, and its "earliest" appearance. Patrick Ercolano's Fungoes, Floaters, and Forkballs (Prentice Hall, 1987), an effective glossary, provides 1500 basic terms, but doesn't approach Dickson's detailed descriptions and depth of coverage: team histories, field names, archaic and obsolete language, fan jargon, and dugout slang. A wide-ranging bibliography (240 books and articles) on baseball terminology , and baseball and language in general , guides users to more in-depth exploration. Although as current as the 1988 season's "balkamania," future editions to this excellent collection are planned. This work will be accessible to the young fan just discovering the game, as well as to scholars of the game and our versatile and ever-expanding language.

If you're a baseball fan and . . . you're curious about the etymology of the phrase out in the left field or you need a refresher on the infield fly rule. A must-have for everyone who seeks to understand the spirit of America and, most especially, our politics: you ll learn why an easy question is a 'softball, ' a tricky one, a 'curve ball, ' and why sometimes we may have to 'play hardball.' We want leaders who 'can step up to the plate, ' free of 'screwball' ideas from 'out of left field.' You will learn from this book and you will treasure this book, just as I have. It is an invaluable American thesaurus. --Mark Shields"

This grand book is truly a baseball lover's dream come true. From the first to the last page, it provides an enjoyable experience for readers to treasure. Of special note are the handsome presentation, adequate type size, and editorial care taken with photos and layout that makes the book accessible without compromising comprehensiveness. An essential guide to America's pastime. "

Baseball-loving dads need this book now. It's the perfect gift any time, but to receive it at the start of baseball season well, it doesn't get any better than that. --Marilyn Crain"

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Book for any Baseball Fan 5. Oktober 2016
Von Frank T. Traceski - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I went to my first baseball game at Fenway Park in 1961 when Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris played there. I have been a fan of baseball for 55 years. Dickson's Baseball Dictionary is teaching me new things about baseball that I never realized before. It is a comprehensive book of baseball terms, both technical and colloquial. This book also provides the origin of the terms to the extent possible. Very entertaining and educational! The game of baseball has many fine points that can be missed by fans who do not pay close attention. This book increases one's total awareness of the game and will provide a higher appreciation of its many aspects.
5.0 von 5 Sternen The Perfect Gift for Baseball Fans 31. Dezember 2014
Von DCLO - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
I have loved this book since I got the 2nd edition way back when. The Third Edition is double it's size. It is a treasure trove of baseball information, lore, history and language. You can find out the source of team names, why the place where batters wait their turn is the "on deck circle" and the fun of ground rules. Once, when I was watching a Nationals game a few years ago, F.P. Santangelo used the term "Bugs Bunny ball" to describe a pitch. Dickson's Baseball Dictionary was there to explain what he meant. This is the perfect gift for all serious baseball fans.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Who is this guy and how does he know all of this stuff? 7. November 2009

Every obsessive pursuit has its own jargon, and baseball is up there with the best of them when it comes to creating a language of its own. Dickson (and perhaps a team of researchers working behind him in the infield and outfield?) seems to know it all. Now that the 2009 baseball season has just come to an end (with the Yankees taking their unprecedented 27th World Series title), many of us will need an occasional baseball fix until spring training rolls around to ward off Post-Season Affective Disorder. This is it -- a way to connect with the game, past and present, in an encyclopedic yet entertaining style. Where else are you going to find an extended essay on the origins and usage of the term "eephus" (a "slowly thrown, high-arcing pitch likely to reach an apex of 25 feet above the ground between the mound and the plate" used to devastating effect by the Pirate's Rip Sewell in the early 40's)? Well, you've got it here.
5.0 von 5 Sternen If You Think You Know Everything About Baseball, Think Again! 19. Januar 2013
Von Michael D. Williams - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
A friend of ours several years ago invited us to the Baseball Reliquary's annual "Shrine of Eternals," a people's HOF. Mr. Dickson was one of the candidates inducted. He told us how he came up with the concept of the dictionary from at the time, his young children to the ballpark. The book not only defines the terms, but explains the historical development and if possible, the first use of the term. Fascinating to keep with your while you have your "cold one" and snacks while watching the game. Play ball!
5.0 von 5 Sternen Explains American Idioms to non-native speakers of English 6. September 2013
Von Janis Aldridge - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This is a great resource to work with English as a Second Language Learners who notice that baseball is the underlying theme in American speech. So many of our expressions and metaphors relate to the game, so in this voume, you have a delineated expalnation with many examples to introduce the non-native speaker to all those obscure references.
Hence, they won't strike out, but drive home their ideas and be home free in all their English class assignments!
