Pressestimmen

"'A fantastic story' - Victoria Wood 'My gut feeling is that Nella will come to be seen as one of the major twentieth-century English diarists.' (David Kynaston, author of 'Austerity Britain') 'Whatever her mood, Nella Last has the quality shared by all great diarists: of making her readers feel that however vast the differences between her life and ours, they are easily outweighed by the shared experiences of love and loss, disappointment and hope, that she describes with such artless humanity.' (Daily Mail)"

Kurzbeschreibung

'I can never understand how the scribbles of such an ordinary person ... can possibly have value.' So wrote Nella Last in her diary on 2 September 1949. More than sixty years on, tens of thousands of people have read and enjoyed three volumes of her vivid and moving diaries, written during the Second World War and its aftermath as part of the Mass Observation project - and the basis for BAFTA-winning drama Housewife 49 starring Victoria Wood.

The Diaries of Nella Last, brings together into a single volume the best of Nella's prolific outpourings, including a great deal of new, unpublished material from the war years. Capturing the everyday trials and horrors of wartime Britain and the nation's transition into peacetime and beyond, Nella's touching and often humorous narrative provides an invaluable historical portrait of what daily life was like for ordinary people in the 1940s and 1950s. Outwardly Nella's life was commonplace; but behind this mask were a penetrating mind and a lively pen. As David Kynaston said on Radio 4, she 'will come to be seen as one of the major twentieth century English diarists.'

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Further Continuation of the three earlier Books. 27. Juni 2013

This has Nella talking about her relationship with her husband in the past. She continues to find her identidy in WVS
and working for the Red Cross. She relates in deal her inner most feelings of religion and her one ideas of her
spiritual side. She has some Eastern thought on her quaker upbringing.During 1943, there is a feeling of hopelessness
around her.The war drags on with not much hope in sight.Keepiing busy keeps the positive feelings from further
detoriating her spirit. Her husband is difficult for her to understand. He is a withdrawn man who depends on her and is
uncomfortable having people or soldiers in for a homey atmostphere before returning to the front.
Nella bravely continues to help anyone, who needs it.
I would like to have known Nella's story before the war.She stated she had three nervous breakdowns trying to please her
husband. She is extremely well read, due to being confined as a child, after an accident that kept her from school.
Of, all the books, diary style of World War II...this is my favorite.

Nella Last was an amazing woman and diarist. I have read every other volume of her writing, and look forward reading this with a nice cup of tea by the fire. It will be a good read for anyone who has not yet met Nella and is interested in the British home front during the war and, especially, in the austerity of the post war years. Many in the US do not realize that British housewives faced more difficult shopping conditions after the war than during. When Lend-Lease was suspended to Britain in 1945 the country could not afford to import food and the US required repayment of the loan (which was completed in 2004!) Britain was sending food to war-torn Europe and its overseas outposts where it was still supporting its military in the Far East. These expenditures, which the country could ill afford, made life in post-war Britain grim and rationing, in some instances, more stringent than during the war. Resourceful Nella, nevertheless, managed to produce meals from next-to-nothing, and to frugally maintain her household, help her sons, grandchildren and elder family members despite very limited resources and a demanding sick (mentally ill) husband. All this despite her own ill health. Reading her diaries puts the "hard times" of today into perspective, and is very inspiring. Highly recommended.

This has a lot of new material, probably 75%. Now if someone would stumble across 'the missing years', I'd be happy. Am hoping it will come in whisper-sync also.

Anyone who has read the other books on Nella's diaries will not be disappointed with this one. A truly fascinating insight into the life and times of Nella.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Nella is my hero 26. September 2013

Engaging and atmospheric - the readers at Mass Observation must have looked forward to Nella's diaries arriving on their desks. She captures the spirit of the Home Front during the war, the true grit of making do and living through endless air raids. She doesn't pretend to be jolly about it all and presents a real picture of what women stuck at home went through to keep mind, body and soul together during such a terrible time.
What I love about her writing is the tiny details she includes. I am amazed at what she could come up with for her husband's meals when food was in such short supply. She never fails to include some little treat or other. I think she was wonderful.
