Highly Recommended for Teen Boys. 22. Juni 2012
Von Andrea T - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This is a series review of the DEATH SERIES, by Tamara Blodgett. I struggled with a way to review each of these books without spoiling them and without becoming redundant. Tough job. So what I decided to do is, spotlight each book, then review the series as a whole.

This series has been on my radar for quite some time now. I actually bought DEATH WHISPERS last summer, I think, and planned to read it at some point. So when the author asked if I might review the series, I knew the time had come.

So what did I think of the DEATH series? I really liked it. The concept was original and smart. Basically, scientist mapped out the human genome and then developed the capability to expand paranormal abilities. Every school-aged child is given a drug cocktail that enhance said abilities. When the children reach puberty, their bodies aren't the only things to develop. Each teen's ability manifests in a different way. Some may become Empaths. Others may become Telepaths, or Telekenesis, or the biggie Affinity for the Dead(AftD). Caleb Hart, series hero, has AftD, and he's the son of the scientist partially responsible for the discovery. Lucky boy. Good thing Caleb has the "J's", his best friends John and Jonesy, and his new girlfriend, Jade. Add in supportive, if quirky, parents and Caleb has support on all fronts.

Beyond the original concept, I love how Blodgett expanded on the story. Caleb and his friends would struggle to survive and solve one complicated scenario, then another would crop up. The first book begins with Caleb, John and Jonesy trying to get the school bullies off their backs. Then they must avoid Caleb, because of his unique abilities, being exploited by the government. Even when Caleb gets out of hot water, the Greysheets are always watching him. And when he's not dealing with the Greysheets, Jade's abusive father is on his case. Oh, and the Affinity for the Dead ability? Not only is Caleb saddled with that, he is also a Cadaver-Manipulator. A necromancer. The dead that Caleb raise obey him, faithfully. He can use them to scare his bullies, or to ward off the bad guys. And sometimes, he loses control of his minions. Not good.

I mentioned the support cast, but they all play a huge role in the books. I really enjoyed Caleb. His voice felt very authentic. He was snarky and sarcastic, but also caring to those he loves. Throughout the series, Caleb is put to the test. He makes some dangerous, unwise choices at times, but mostly for the right reasons. His best friends, the J's, were very funny and always had Caleb's back. I adored Jade. Jade comes from a rough background. She has an alcoholic, abusive father. She was removed from the home and lives in the care of her aunt. A lot of people judge her, but Caleb only sees her for herself, a girl he's crazy about. Their caring, slow-building relationship was probably my favorite aspect of the story. Call me a romantic. Their relationship doesn't exactly go smoothly, though. Jacob's abilities, her family, and circumstances beyond their control put them to the test. And lastly, Caleb's parents, Kyle and Alicia. I found them to be funny, a great source of comic relief. And most importantly, they're present. They play an actual, big, part in the stories.

So...I do have to say that while I did like Caleb and the snark, it did begin to wear on me after a while. I just felt the internal and external quippiness was a bit much. But, to be fair, teenage boys are a bit much at times, so there's that. ;-) Also, Caleb likes the word "retarded". A lot. Like, he says it so much, it's like he's trying to make a point that he'll say it just because he can. I know words only have the power we give them, but I've never liked that one. So that did bug me. But, I will say that as the series progresses and Caleb matures, he does ease up on the annoying language.
Also, the villains sometimes felt a bit cartoonish to me.

The DEATH SERIES was, overall, a really fun, unique ride. The scientific aspect was clever. The characters were funny and memorable. The action never stops. I think this series would certainly be a hit with teens, specifically teen boys.

This book starts after Caleb is arrested for using his zombies as weapons, he got off with probation. Dealing with all the problems of his trial and the tension it causes all those he loves is not the only problems he and his crew are facing this book. The greysheets are doing their best to take him out, but they are not going at it too his face like they have before, this time it is much more sneaky and deadly to those he loves. His heart is in jeapordy as well. There is only so much Caleb can take before he loses it completely.

You would think being 27 and a mother of 3 would make a book like this seem too juvenile, but its really not. These kids face challenges and trials daily that most adults couldnt handle. The humor and attitudes of these kids are what I love most. I have never laughed as much reading a book as I do reading the books in this series. These kids crack me up. I make sure I read these books when I am alone or with family who dont care that I am crying cuz I am laughing so hard over a book.

I do recommend that you read Tamara's Savage series otherwise you might not understand completly a few parts of the book where the kids do some travelling to another parallel world. The world is very unique with the different species of humans you will read about. You will grasp the concept of course, so dont worry there, but for full understanding read the other series too.

And Tamara, reading about that last trip to the other world it is really making me scared for the next Savage book. That was like a slap in the face (a good slap though) preview into the next book, or books, and I am scared for the characters of that series that I love so much.

As always Tamara's writing is excellent, I dont even remember finding a spelling mistake which I almost always notice while reading. The way she has weaved these two worlds together(from 2 of her book series) is amazing. She pulled off what many could not. Tamara you rock!!

I tend to ramble a lot and bounce around a bit so bear with me. There was no shortage of action, humor, mystery, and love in this book so no disappointment there. Gale and Clydes relationship is one of a kind, and I love reading about the attraction and love these 2 feel for eachother.
******SPOILER******I cried when Clyde 'died' again. I am a baby I know. I really hope he comes back to 'life' in the next book. ******END SPOILER******

Poor Jade has more struggles going into this book. After all that girl has gone through I had hoped she would get some downtime to renew herself, but we may have to wait for the next book for that. There was a time in this book that I did not like her. I know she wasnt herself due to what the greysheets were doing, so I tried to cut her some slack, LOL.

We have all the old enemies do deal with, plus some new ones. A lot of lingering questions were explained in this book, and yet we are still left with tons question for the next book. Then we have those who we are not quite sure if we can trust them, like Brett. After the life transference that happened with Brett and Jade in the last book, we all wondered how that would effect them, lets just say more than we could have guessed. Brett while nicer, and less of a douch in this book, is still a jerk IMO.
******SPOILER******I was sad that he died, however it was a necessary death otherwise Jade would not be able to be herself again, and her and Caleb would not be able to be together.******END SPOILER******
Then there is Parker. He was a bad guy, then kinda a good guy helping out, then bad, then okay, but this book clears all that up. And we get yet another startling revelation about who he really is.

The only thing that I disliked about this book was that
*****SPOILER******the Zondorae brother and Howie were not killed when they had the chance. Yes letting the brothers live the 1st time turned out to be both a good and a bad thing since they needed their blood to cure everyone, but after all the awful things they did in the Savage world they really should have been killed, they are too dangerous to let live as was proven since they kidnapped Parker and got Brett killed, and Clyde back to 'dead' zombie status. Then Howie, this guy is way to dangerous to let live, not just to the crew, but to everyone! I am sure they serve a purpose in the next books, but I hate them so much I wanted them dead now. *sigh* ******END SPOILER******

Would I recommend this book? Absolutly! To everyone of all ages!
Will I read this book again? Oh yes I will
Will I read the next book in series? Yes! I cant wait!

This series must be read in order. The first book is Death Whispers (The Death Series). The second book is Death Speaks (The Death Series). The third book is the prequel Death Inception (The Death Series). The fourth book is Death Screams (The Death Series). This is the fifth book.

This series has more twists and turns than you could ever expect. The exploration of everyone's powers always seems to come with a price and Caleb's price is to be on probation now all because he used a zombie (Clyde) to help save Jade's life when her father was trying to kill her. Brett actually killed Jade's father with an illegal weapon and got in no real trouble at all. Pretty much people are scared of Caleb's abilities so if he even thinks about crossing a line they will make him pay big time. Even though Jade's father killed her aunt and beat Jade almost to death Caleb still has to pay the price.

Randi experiences a jump in powers unexpectedly and whole new worlds of trouble open up for the gang. Especially as her mother (the principal) is none too pleased in her abilities or the company she keeps. This is an exciting development for the kids as they have been overly bored due to the enforced Dead free life Caleb's probation has forced on them. School is still school but no new members are added to the group even though the enemy list is growing steadily.

This book made me wonder how far interconnectedness could stretch... I really am excited to read the next book as I am sure it has even more surprises in store than this one did! Unrequited Death (The Death Series) is my next read for sure!

***This series is suitable for very mature young adult through adult readers

4.0 von 5 Sternen Intense! 21. Juni 2013

Death Weeps is intense. I was nervous in the beginning that things were going to get strange--not in a good way--but, wow, that second half is...well, intense. There is another time jump from Death Screams to Death Weeps, but we do get some flashbacks of Caleb's trial. This time jump does make sense, since I'm sure being on probation kept Caleb from participating in any dangerous and illegal activities. At the start of this fifth installment, Caleb is trying to remain in control of his abilities as he faces the consequences of his previous actions.

Caleb's POV is once again the main focus, but there are the occasional chapters from Clyde and Jade. Death Weeps also picks up a special POV from another of the author's series: Queen Clara from Savage! There is some crossover between these two series now, and I think the author handled it very well. Although I am disappointed that an extremely intense scene has been spoiled for me once I return to the other series. But I am eager to see it from Clara's POV, since I'm sure she has a very different reaction to the events than Caleb did. I don't want to spoil why these series collide, but I will just mention that the paranormal abilities didn't originate how we thought, and there are a few new ones introduced in this book. Clara's world also provides new problems for Caleb and his friends.

Death Weeps is much darker and much more emotional that the previous books. There is so much heartache for Caleb, especially when it comes to Jade. She's been placed in a less than happy foster home, and her foster brother is just another thing Caleb feels he must protect her from. There's also the connection that Jade now shares with Brett after the end of the last book. It's something that Caleb is having trouble dealing with. Jade is also feeling overwhelmed by Caleb's constant need to shield her from everything. She just wants to have a normal life and relationship.

This series just keeps getting better and better. Even though there are some things that I didn't like, I can't help but love these books. Death Weeps may have started off weaker than the other books to me, but it definitely picks up later on. Nothing is what it seems in Kent, and it looks like Caleb is close to bringing out all of the secrets. It's not just his world that's in trouble now, and I cannot wait to see how this all ends.

This book was soooo good. Tamara combined SAVAGE with DEATH and made it wonderful. Caleb is on probation for using Clyde to defend himself against his old Sensei who was targeting the AP girls & Jade. Jade is now in a foster home since her Aunt passed away. They're really weird. One of her 'brothers' is a total Creeper.'s that bad. Caleb & Crew must stop the Graysheets from ruining a parallel world, Clara's world. Caleb & Crew literally pop up and save Clara & her kingdom from these creepy Graysheets. Only to find, that when they did, the Graysheets had a plan B. So, they then return to Clara's world. Craziness happens and Caleb now has to deal with the government and the mind crazy drug that his friends have been given, specifically, Jade. It makes her crazy-like. She doesn't trust him. She believes Caleb will hurt her. She then turns to Brett. At the end of this book Brett saves Jade and dies. Jade has that connection with Brett and Jade had assumed that she wouldn't be with Caleb because he was her addiction. After the antidote and a week or so, Jade is finally back with Caleb but question and certain people lurk about leaving it open for the final installment of DEATH.
