Favourite characters revisited
am 13. März 2015
Giving the central character more background and completing her hist/tory was a clever move. Seeing all of the former tenants reunite at the Burning Man festival is a joy, but nevertheless, it is a bittersweet reunion - since Mouse's mustache is white, his once slim hips have hidden under a buddha belly and Mrs Madrigal is still bohemian but frail and feels her end is near. As usual this book muses on what it means to be an outcast, a nonconformist in a conformist society and how to manage change. Even San Francisco has changed, it is not the golden city of the seventies any more, but run over by dotcom millionaires and most of the characters struggle with financial issues in a city that has become too materialistic for its natives. Despite the many wonderful moments described the undertone is melancholic and makes you long for the happy times of "Tales of the City".
