Do you believe in miracles?

Jenny Garrett does. A miracle brought her through a terrible car crash.

Do you believe in ghosts?

Jenny didn't either, until...

Sometimes accidents happen. Then again sometimes accidents are planned. Somebody wants Jenny dead, forcing detective Rick Walker into a frantic search to uncover the who and the why before they try again. But Jenny can't help. Her memory of the accident, and the weeks preceding it, are scattered all willy-nilly somewhere in the darkest recesses of her healing brain.

But Jenny's real horror transcends far beyond the stalking of an earthly killer. Jenny's being terrorized by a Doppelganger--a frightening ghostly image of herself.

A skilled paranormal investigator, Dwight Mackenzie's willing to help Jenny uncover the real truth behind her torment. But the real truth is: there is only one escape from the vicious torment Jenny faces.

Jenny Garrett awakens to find an apparition of herself staring at her from across the room. So begins this bizarre trip into the supernatural. It turns out Jenny has survived a terrible crash but can't remember the accident or the weeks leading up to the accident. Enter a police detective who at first makes Jenny think shes done something terrible to cause her accident. The twist is: someone wanted Jenny dead and the detective is trying to figure out who and why. You are exquisitely teased with the notion that either the ghost of Jenny is trying to kill her or someone human is trying to kill her. While the detective is trying to unravel the mystery behind Jenny's attempted murder, Jenny is trying to find a way to escape the ghost's torment.
Dark Side definitely keeps you turning pages as you seek to figure out not only who the would-be killer is, but also how Jenny can escape the Doppelganger. Because it seems the ghost is spiritually connected to her, she can't just flee the house as is so often the case in your typical ghost story.
The story plays out at a rapid pace and Barlog keeps dangling suspense in front of you to keep you reading. Mystery fans and horror fans alike will enjoy this one.

I loved it from front cover to back cover. The cover itself might seem simplistic; black background and red text with a female face split in two, one side of the face- a negative. Not so. I, myself, wasn't thrilled at first but eventually the cover ate at me. Simplistic? Only in the way that a photograph of our galaxy can be. Just holding this book gives me the chills. As for the story itself? Not horrifying. Creepy. Yes, indeedy-deed. The creeping fear that, if you are lucky enough to fall asleep, wakes you in the middle of the night with a light feathery touch to the back of your neck. You almost hear your name kissed into your ear. You are given a lovely woman. A woman who has survived a terrible accident. You get a look at all of the people in her life. Among them, a husband who may, or may not, love her. Next, the mystery. Was this an accident? No? How ick... Well then, into the tasty stew gets thrown the true sour apple flavor. A Doppelganger. Jenny's. A fun read full of delicious fear and mesmerizing mystery. Supernatural Thriller; Trade PB 293 pages -- Leann Arndt, Reviewer

I read DARK SIDE:THE HAUNTING over Halloween and really liked the idea of a ghost story that is not just another haunted house. The Doppelganger concept brought a new twist to those things that go bump in the night. I couldn't tell whether DARK SIDE was a mystery enshrouded by a ghost story or a ghost story enveloped by a mystery. Either way it was a delightful read and I recommend it to all Koontz and King fans.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Spooky Mystery! 6. Februar 2012
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I thought this was a pretty decent read. I gave it four stars instead of five because a few minor things disappointed me about the story (things that are probably more bothersome to me than anyone else). I'm one of those readers who likes all the plot lines to be resolved and explained and that didn't happen enough for me. I thought the ending went a little wild in those last few pages (some people might disagree with me here) but for all that, I couldn't put it down!

(Tiny spoiler about to be revealed here so do not read this next sentence if you don't want to know anything that happens in the book!) I didn't like what happened to the poor dog (I hate it when anything happens to animals in stories). Besides, I'm not sure the purpose for this happening other than adding some gruesomeness to the story.

Despite my minor disappointments, I truly did enjoy reading this book. Honestly. I complain about how sweet fudge is, too, but I still consume gobs of it! As for the mystery factor...the husband's actions do make you wonder and then, of course, you are looking at all the other characters as well and wondering about them. But, aside from trying to solve WHY she was in that car accident and who might have been involved, the haunting keeps you pretty well creeped out. I loved it when she brought the paranormal investigator into the story. Great stuff. Overall, a pretty decent read. For the price, you surely can't complain (okay, you can complain maybe just a little... but you won't feel cheated!).

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not scary at all! 28. Dezember 2011
Von Dierdra McGill - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I have had this book for awhile on my Kindle and finally got around to reading it. I was anxious to start it, as it looked like a really good read and I liked the cover. I was so disappointed in this book tho!
The story dragged on and was very predictable, I am the sort of person who tries not to figure things out in books but this one was just to hard not to know what would happen, and yes I was right about the ending.
The characters were really annoying and the one graphic sex scene in the book seemed very out of place. A police officer having sex with someone involved in a investigation annoyed me also, we were supposed to believe that he was a professional and really care about the case yet he is sleeping with a woman he just met involved in the case? He also acted like he had never seen a pretty woman before!
There were big words thrown in here and there in the book that did not fit at all! Like anteroom and menagerie, yes they did mean the words the author used them for but they felt very out of place with how the rest of the book was written and with menagerie is usually used for wild animals in captive. I know it can mean other things but so rarely used to mean anything else and there are much better words that would have worked much better.
I really did not care for the book overall, the characters annoyed me, the plot was predictable and flat and nothing was scary about this book at all.
4.0 von 5 Sternen More of a murder mystery than a horror. 5. August 2013
Von L. Polley - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

*Won from Goodreads first reads*

I would not have picked this book up in a shop for one reason. The cover. The cover is awful. Really really bad photoshop. And it's a shame about the cover because I think people would pass it by and actually there is a good little story lurking behind that horror.

Jenny has been in a terrible car crash and almost lost her life. But now she is awake and being haunted by a Doppelganger, she can't remember anything and the police have come to the concusion that the "accident" was attempted murder.

This book is billed as a horror but it's actually not that scary. I could have read this late at night, all alone in house and gone to bed without being kept awake by thoughts of ghosts. But the ghost story is interesting and one I've not come across before in books. I felt for Jenny, no one belives her. Being told something is a result of painkillers must be a real bitch when your actually being thrown around the room by a ghost.

The real drive in this story is who tried to murder Jenny. I was kept guessing by the author. And I liked how more things were revealed as the book went on. Things I never would have guessed.

Overall this was an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. If your looking for something to scare than pants off of you, then this is not the book. However if you are looking for a good murder mystery then pick this one up!
