In a beguiling tale of deception and murder, desire and theft, seduction and betrayal—where nothing is what it appears to be—a man is murdered and an iconic musical instrument is stolen during a gathering at Eliot Sexton’s Park Avenue apartment. The stolen item—an object of desire worshipped by millions—is the key to solving the crime, or so the detective brought in to investigate believes. The murder, however, is not nearly as straightforward as it seems—nor is the theft.

Though the island of Manhattan presents no shortage of suspects—many of them capable of killing to satisfy their appetites—Eliot, a young economic historian and writer, soon becomes the prime suspect. As he draws closer to the truth behind the theft and murder, he also becomes the killer’s next target.

Irreverent, provocative, and utterly unpredictable, Dangerous Illusions is a weeklong polyrhythmic journey into contemporary New York that will keep readers guessing right up to its thrilling conclusion.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Murder Mystery in NYC, Almost a Genre To Itself 20. Februar 2014
Von Douglas C. Meeks - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Personally, I like direct writing. I don't like feeling like I need a dictionary in hand wondering what a word means. Not a bad thing it's just tiring, but that doesn't mean that it isn't well written.

This is a murder mystery in NYC and as the title of the review says it has almost become a genre into itself. The murder mystery was top notch but the writing was excruciatingly detailed the pages of descriptions of food, clothes, restaurants that had zero to do with the plot just makes this a ponderous reading experience to get to the meat of the story.

I now have more knowledge of drums than I ever hoped to acquire, so let me say this and keep this review short.

It was a really good mystery, it was bogged down by overly detailed descriptions that added nothing to the plot but when you finish it you do not feel like you have wasted the time reading it. It was entertaining in the end and perhaps a bit abrupt ending considering the detailed story.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Murder? Yes. Murder mystery? No. History of drums? Yes. 20. Februar 2014

I was disappointed with the direction of Gabriele's first novel. It starts out with a murder of a former diplomat at the home of a wealthy author and publisher. Sexton writes economic books, sort of a dry subject for most. But he is also an expert on drums, a fun topic for certain musicians.

Enter Detective Graelik, one of the NYPD's best, yeah, not really. This police detective is one of the worst I have ever read about. He never looked into the murder. He instead looked into the theft of a set of priceless drums that happened at the same time.

You would think that the murder of a former U.S. Diplomat would bring in the FBI or some other Federal Agency. It for sure should get the attention of the NYPD. But no, Detective Graelik is more concerned with the loss of drums, the sex life of Sexton, the wealth of those involved and many other mundane things.

The book hardly ever returns to the murder of the diplomat until the end. Instead it takes us through a history of drums. It takes us through what different drum sets are. It takes us through who the best drummers were. And, it takes us through the whims of a neurotic millionaire sister-in-law of the dead diplomat.

Why not solve the murder? Instead we read mundane trivia about a police detective, lost drums and the shattered lives of over indulgent people.

Sorry, I didn't get it. Should have called it a book about the history of drums instead of a book about a murder mystery.

The writing was over indulgent. It went on and on and on (almost like my review) to the point where you are sick of reading and just push through to the next chapter hopeful that we will return to the murder mystery.

Well, sorry, I just didn't like it. I doubt I will be inclined to read another novel by Gabriele.
4.0 von 5 Sternen A fine read - with a twist 22. April 2014

Gabrielle's DANGEROUS ILLUSIONS was recommended to me be Classic Drummer Magazine, who'd done a brief review on it - the subject of "those drums" being the hook. And while I admit to buying it with no idea what to expect, I came away pleasantly surprised. I found a solidly-formed novel, with well-rounded characters, and gobs of history re: New York City architecture - as well as a confounding murder mystery with "those drums" as the hook. The writer also showed his knowledge - or research abilities - in describing historical aspects of Ludwig drums, past & present, which I found highly enlightening. It's nit often an author knows - or takes the time to get to know - his subject matter so thoroughly. And for that I am grateful.
All in all a fine read - though it ended a bit abruptly, perhaps, for my tastes. And "those drums" that belonged to . . . . we're treated with the dignity and respect they deserved.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Dangerous Illusions: A Novel of Murder, Theft & Betrayal by Joseph J. Gabriele 4. März 2014

If you love a mystery then you will love Dangerous Illusions: A Novel of Murder, Theft & Betrayal by Joseph J. Gabriele. I loved the suspense and when someone is murdered and it happens in New York City. Gabriele will give you an intellectual challenge to keep you busy on a rainy day. If you ever watched the series 24 on television then you will want to read this book because you will want to know what happens next and keep turning the pages. Just when you think you have figured out the murder a nice twist shines light onto the characters and storyline to keep you drawn into the mystery. The book cover is well designed as well as the writing style of this first book by Joseph J. Gabriele. If you like a great crime story that involves investigations then this is a great book to add to your collection of reads!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Dangerous Illusions 15. Februar 2014
Von LA Howell - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Dangerous Illusions by Joseph J. Gabriele is a 268 page murder mystery written in first person, present tense. It includes a poem, forty chapters, no titles just numbers, and an author bio at the end. The first letter of the first word for new chapters and also in random paragraphs (at least for my kindle) was misaligned and covered over the sentence below it.

The story opens during a party at Eliot Sexton’s Park Avenue apartment where a theft and the murder of Eugene Livingston, the Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Affairs for the City of New York, occurs. Deceit and betrayal hampers the investigation. In my opinion, Gabriele indulged big-time with the description. Some paragraphs went on at length that had absolutely nothing to do with moving the story forward. I ended up skipping many of those. You could probably cut the book by at least seventy-five pages and it would read much better.
