On her deathbed, friends waited eagerly for the last sagacious words of Gertrude Stein. She did not disappoint. "Now," she whispered, "I know the answer. But what is the question?" That's my reaction to these books that are not only classics but historic as well. Tens of millions of people who have trouble making friends and want to stop worrying-read this book. The book provides many answers but it leaves a major question.
"How To Make Friends" is, actually, a disguised book for salesmen on how to sell things.(It was written in the pre K-Mart/mall days. How do you get a guy to buy insurance? Make him your friend! Carnegie offered a national system of classes for salesmen and this book was used as the text. Still there are some valuable tips in connecting with people and getting them interested in your own spiel, but, in the end analysis, it verges on being manipulative. Learn to listen to people-even if they bore the hell out of you. Get them to open up to you-even if you acquire power over them at the sense of their own vulnerabilities. Don't talk about yourself;make them talk about themselves. Well, Freud has a lot more manipulative advice to offer-if you read between the lines.
Where I depart from Carnegie is his underlying definition of "friendship" which seems in getting people to do what you want them to do. Friendship is really deeper and much more two sided. If you want a true friend, you need to be genuinely interested in he/she and not just nod your head as you listen to a speech on how John Rocker should or should not play baseball in New York-yawn-or what really makes Hillary Clinton tick-a clock?

My father borrowed this book from a friend of his when we still lived in Russia. It was a difficult time--my parents were going through a nasty divorce. One day he opened this book and it became a "bible" to him. After reading it he became more appreciative of everyone around him, and beleive it or not, it put an end to a divorce of my parents. 10 years later they are still happy and in love. As soon as I was old enough they made me read the book, and I refused to. Only at the end of my junior year in college, when I had more problems than ever, my Organizational Behavior teacher assigned this book to us, and it helped me to get on with my life. I'd highly recomend this book.

While this book offers some valuable advice and insights, it is rather dated. The book was written in the 1930's, not recently as Amazon's description "(October 1998)" may suggest and consequently mislead readers and buyers of this book. Although there may be some universal truths and traits that are still applicable today, many of the examples are over a 100 years old. Dale Carnegie fails to take into account issues such as race, gender, and wealth that have a tremendous impact on how people act and react to others who are different from themselves regardless of how nice and complimentary one is. Back in the 30's, any white male who was likeable and positive (picture actor Jimmy Stewart in a number of heroic, all-American, corporate approved roles in the 30's and 40's) had a chance to be successful in any given field he chose, provided that he put in a small amount of effort and enthusiasm. Dale's advice may work well if we all lived on the set of the movie, "It's A Wonderful Life". Reality, however, is quite different, especially is you're not a white successful male.

My 11th grade english teacher suggested that I read this book because she thought that I would be able to appreciate it. All I can say is wow, what an impact. This book basically helped me quantify what I already knew to be true. Things like giving honest and sincere appreciation, smiling, and remembering the little details people tell you. It has made a difference in my life, and I think it to be a positive one at that. No book can ever teach you who you are, and I don't believe that a book can ever be written as a guide for a way of life, but if you get from this book what I did, you'll understand that you had it right all along, and you'll be able to understand yourself better.

Our world would be so much better of if anyone just knew about the principles outlined in this terrific book. Leil Lowndes said in her books that Carnegie is a little outdated and just to theoretical for everyday use.
Right, he does'nt do it the Lowndes way - pointing you in the direction telling you to do this or that in a certain situation. But it's nontheless a profoundly practical book giving you the accounts of how many others mastered their worries or bettered their lives. It's just good to find out that others have similar problems to yours.
Buy this book. If you don't ever buy books, buy at least this one. It's worth ten times it's price.
