Cugel the Clever (Tales of the Dying Earth, Band 2) Taschenbuch – 4. September 2016
Kaufoptionen und Plus-Produkte
Earth is a decadent world older than memory, the bloated red sun soon to wink out forever. Thief, vagabond, liar and cheat, hapless Cugel the Clever goes too far when he seeks to rob Iucounu, the Laughing Magician. Transported across the sea to a faraway land, Cugel must return with a pair of lenses that show visions of paradise. With curses and schemes, Cugel makes the long journey back to the wizard’s manse, determined to wreak revenge. No one ever outdid Jack Vance in the creation of rogues and ramblers. Cugel the Clever, originally published as Eyes of the Overworld, is the Grandmaster at the top of his form. – Matt Hughes

Vance's prose is Lieber-esque in places, which I found quite enjoyable; "[t]he woman is a monomaniac!” he told himself. “She lacks clarity and perceptiveness; how could I have done else, for her welfare and my own? I am rationality personified; it is unthinking to insist otherwise!” Similar in style, but markedly different in voice.
As many of the greats are wont to do, Vance also offers some observations about human nature and 'universal truth'. Two of my favorites from this novel are as follows. The first; "Your prudence is commendable,” declared the Chief Chade. “The folk of today tend to commit themselves rashly to courses they later regret. It was not so in my youth, when sobriety and discretion prevailed." Every generation bears memory seen through the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia. Kudos to Vance for this passage.
The second remark is every bit as accurate and will no doubt remain so until the sun begins to fade. "The purportedly free was seldom as represented; in one guise or another the Law of Equivalence must prevail." You are correct, Mr. Vance; nothing is free. You win at making the expression much more verbose.
All told, "Cugel the Clever" is phenomenal fantasy; never a dull moment, the right mix of intellectual and physical action, just enough magic to keep it interesting. All of that, wrapped in some killer prose with periodic injections of wicked humor. A very worthy read.
Cugel, a deeply amoral opportunist and skilled thief, is persuaded by a merchant acquaintance to attempt a robbery of the manse of a powerful magician. Cugel is captured by one of the magician’s traps and in return for his freedom has to agree to acquire an artefact for the magician, a sort of lens called an Eye of the Overworld. This is to be found in a remote land, to which the magician transports Cugel, having first implanted a small alien entity inside him to guarantee fidelity. A rather picaresque series of adventures follow as Cugel tries to fulfil his mission and make the long, perilous journey back, all the time plotting revenge against the merchant and magician.
I found this novel, the first thing I have read by Vance, immensely entertaining and enjoyable. A large part of this is due to the character of the eponymous anti-hero. Although regarding himself as cultured and of superior cleverness, he is generally self-serving, callous and vicious; and there is a strong element of black comedy as his own greed and poor judgement get him into one difficulty after another. On a trivia note, the Dying Earth series was a major inspiration during the early development of the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, and Cugel appears to be the prototype of the rogue class used in that game.
