Synopsis

Tired of the old ways of playing? Want to break out of a guitar rut? Learn to play rock guitar like a horn section, or a synthesizer or even like a drummer. Aimed at providing advice and direction for the frustrated guitarist, Guthrie Govan focuses on how you can expand your potential by refining your playing techniques, allowing you to tackle more complex riffs and solos. Using some of the most influential rock players of our time this book explains how to develop a more accomplished style, providing advice on borrowing licks from other instruments and using exotic scales, with each example played on the accompanying instructional CD.

If you really want to reach the next level with your guitar playing techniques, then this book will totally do the job for you!
Alot of examples and exercises to train your skills.
If you take is slowly and practice daily with this book, then you will achieve great results without doubt.
Mr. Guthrie Govan knows he's stuff and after finishing this book and spending good amount of time with it, you will be on an entirely new level.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent reference for guitarists of any level! 11. Dezember 2005
Von Swampdonkey90 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Author Guthrie Govan is a long time contributor to European monthly magazine Guitar Techniques. The magazine is available in the U.S.A as in import at large book sellers such as Barnes and Noble. The magazine is aimed at a higher level player than the various similar American guitar magazines. I have been following Guthrie's columns for a few years now. He is a master player and a master educator and Creative Guitar 2 is a must have for any rock based guitarist. The book covers techniques from alternative picking ( with numerous picking exercises that are fresh and useful....no chromatics here!) to emulating other instruments and eight finger tapping. I have been playing for 22 years and this book has breathed life into topics that I foolishly thought I had mastered. The information in this book is interesting and applicable to your daily playing. My picking and phrasing have already been challenged by this book. This is hands down one of the best technique based guitar reference books I own ( and I have an extensive library) and a must have in my opinion.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The Incredible Art of Guitar 25. April 2007
Von Steve Zavitz - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Guthrie Govan is truly a virtuoso in all aspects of the guitar. He's tamed the 6-stringed beast, and has mastered technique that some players only dream of. But, enough praise for the man, let's talk about his work in this book. Guthrie has mastered both playing and teaching in Creative Guitar. Where most books simply list a bunch of exercises, Guthrie compartmentalizes them all into specific sections. It really helps when you want to work on a particular aspect of playing (whether it be tapping, economy picking, hybrid picking, etc.), without having to leaf through a 100+ page book. Guthrie also orders his lessons in a logical format. He sometimes starts off with a challening lick to illustrate the potential of a certain technique, but then he simplifies the technique into several parts, and finally, he brings all those pieces together in his last few licks of each chapter. Guthrie also explains his exercises in a way that most guitarists can understand, he encourages learning all your music theory, but is aware that a lot of people don't have the time to devote towards learning all the nuances of the fretboard. It's also very refreshing to see lessons dealing with something besides alternate picking (although Guthrie doesn't pull any punches on that topic either), he's got full chapters on 8-Finger tapping, extending scalar runs and chordal ideas, and even on emulating other instruments with the guitar (including bass, hammond organ, Japanese koto, and even harmonica). This book is refreshing and I recommend it to anyone who is bored with their guitar or happens to be stuck in a rut.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Tear Their Faces Off 15. September 2007
Von R. Siebenaler - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Tear their faces off with blazing virtuousity is what you'll do when you master the techniques in this book! I have quite a few other technique books by Troy Stetina, Satriani, and Musicians Institute I believe. They are alright and have some decent and some useful information in them but have not made the impact on my guitar playing I was hoping.

Particularly useful in this book is that exercises and ideas are written in both standard notation and tablature. Sometimes its easier to see patterns in standard notation than it is in tab form; notation also helps a lot in learning the fretboard. I was worried this book would skimp on the technical side of playing and be geared more to standard scale exercises like other books I own. This is not the case. Two handed tapping, eight finger tapping even, legato picking, strange sequences similiar to those found on Vai's Passion and Warfare album, odd rhythm grouping patterns, double stops, and even how to make your guitar sound like a Hammond organ and other intruments are included.

This is a fantastic book geared to highly technical guitar playing. References to other great guitar albums are also sprinkled throughout to expand your listening library. I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about mastering the guitar and wish I had it years ago myself. I've been playing for almost 15 years now.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Simply the best 3. November 2006
Von Earl S. Cobb - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Guthrie Govan is one of those rare guitar players who has mastered the instrument. His style and touch is that of Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane. He is truly a great, and it is sad that he like the aforementioned will probably never get the recognition he deserves, but such is life.

Where this book excels above the rest, is its simplistic approach to the subject at hand. It never bogs you down with whiz kid termonology, it is straight-forward and spot on. This is not to say that it won't appeal to us nerdy guys who want to know it all, it just balances out to make the perfect book.

The exercises are fun to play and will tie your fingers in a knot in no time flat. But more than that, they work the things that most guitar players never think to work. Let's face it, there are two ways to practise, the right way, and the wrong way. That is why you meet players who have been playing 20+ years and they are mediocre, and then you meet a kid who has been playing 4 years and he burns like the best. One practised the right way, the other spent his time noodling scales.

This book is a must have if you really want to delve deep into guitar insanity. But be forewarned, this book will not make you play like Guthrie, only years of hard work will do that. But if you want the right path to guitar greatness, this book will guide you there.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Creative Guitar 2 Guthrie Govan! 3. April 2015

This is one very exciting guitar technique book. I realize that I will need to make a special time each day to set and assimilate all the knowledge that is in book so that I do not miss the important things. I just discovered Guthrie Govan and I must say he is a fine musician. They say he has played guitar except for three years. The book is certainly a very informative and challenging one but sometimes one has to venture above and beyond to learn. This book is a treasure and especially for those that want to learn the Govan way!
