"This book details well this saga in a lavish presentation, along with an equally well-researched text with all the details that an enthusiast could wish for." - Victory Lane
"Place Corvette Sixty Years on your coffee table and it’s bound to be a favorite page turner, but better yet prop it in your lap and turn the pages slowly and learn everything you’ve never known about the legendary two-seater." - Iveho.com

HASH(0x8d015cd8) von 5 Sternen Corvette Sixty Years 26. Juli 2012
Von Free Spirit Enterprises - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
I've been collecting car magazines and car books since the mid-'60s. My library has gotten larger than I ever imagined. There's one book that I accidentally bought three times. I have four different versions of essentially the same book authored by Randy Leffingwell and published by Motorbooks. All four versions are very nice books, loaded with excellent images and well written prose by Leffingwell. But each time I bought the book online, I thought I was getting a different book because the covers and sizes are all different.

So, when I saw that Motorbooks was publishing "Corvette Sixty Years," I was holding out in hopes of a totally new book and not a shuffled around version of the previous "Corvette Fifty Years" with some updated C5 and C6 material. I was NOT disappointed! Leffingwell and MBI have delivered the goods! The book is, for me, a visual delight. You see, when you have as many books and magazines as I have, you've probably seem nearly all of the old vintage photos showing the design and development work on the Corvette. At least, that's what I thought!

Those rascals at GM Media Archive have clearly been holding out on us! The book designers at MBI made ample use of what may be newly released, or seldom used GM archive photographs. While it's true that during the design process of any car, many photographs are taken. But over six decades, I seriously doubt that "every" photo was saved. Most of us in the Corvette community have seen about 1/4 of the GM Media Archive photos used in the book, but the rest (and there are plenty) are delicious to Corvette history/nostalgia buffs like myself. The rest of the wonderful imagery is supplied by the talents of the Ed Baumgarten, Dave Wendt, David Newhardt, Randy Leffingwell, and National Corvette Museum.

The story of the Corvette has become incredibly long with many chapters and subchapters, side-bar exploits, backdoor racing efforts, in your face racing efforts, and a cast of characters worthy of a movie. "Corvette Sixty Years" weighs in at 254 pages of text. A book covering the entire 60-year heritage of the Corvete could easily be three or four times this size. In the first three chapters Leffingwell takes you on a quick and concise tour of six generations of Corvettes in 179 pages.

The fourth chapter is one of my favorites, "Racing - Beating The World's Best." Racing is what defined the Corvette in the beginning and has been the driving spiritual force of the car. In the beginning it was "the factory" that built the super Corvettes - the Corvette SS, the Sting Ray Racer, the Grand Sport, and a few others. But when the lid came down hard in `63 over the Grand Sport and NASCAR "Mystery Motor" flap, it was up to the privateers to carry on. Lucky for us that GM got over its "We don't race" attitude, as now the factory has taken the racing lead since the `99 C5-R. It's all beautifully covered in 53 pages.

"Corvette Sixty years" closes with a salute to the Corvette community titled, "Community Action - The People and Places." If you look online you will find hundreds of Corvette car shows around the country every year. Some people "do the circuit" like barnstormers that traded in their Boeing Stearman for a loaded C6 Grand Sport. These happy events bring people together, all with the same passion - Corvettes.

Any died in wool Corvette lover will tell you that they never get tired of "just looking" at their favorite Corvette. That's the way it is with a true classic. "Corvette Sixty years" is the kind of book that someone without any knowledge of Corvettes could enjoy. Beauty, is beauty, and this book would make a fine gift for anyone interested in performance cars. And an EXCELLENT addition to the serious Corvette fan's library. So, to Leffingwell, Wendt, Baumgarten, Newhardt, the National Corvette Museum, GM Archives, and the design, editing, and management team at Motorbooks - BRAVO! - K. Scott Teeters, author of "The Illustrated Corvette Series."

I just got this book and I am so happy, It is a great read and full of Pictures I have not seen before from GM's archives. There are some that I have seen and some photos I have seen as well,But the way it put together and the cars in here.I Love the section "XPs,The Q and Ocean Aggressors."I love the black and white GM Archive Picture of a Corvette in Puerto Rico,at the First Grand Prix of Puerto Rico at Auto Pista De Caguas,A Beautiful 66'427 Roadster in Laguna Blue,The Apollo 12 Astronauts Corvettes(3 pictured in color, small picture. No mention though of The Color, which is Riverside Gold/Black)And the then there is the 63'Daytona Blue Coupe with Red Interior(of which there is an AutoArt Model of which I have.)While there may be some typos(blame China Printer)and It is a short Book to read(more condensed.)I Still Love this book,It does not Cover/include the Centennial Edition 100th Anniversary Corvettes or The Daytona Prototype Racer Corvettes which is fine since The book went to press before this. However, there is the 2013 60th Anniversary Corvette Roadster as well as the NEW Grand Sport Corvette,New ZR1.There are some great photos of Zora and The CERV 1,Also The Alpha And Beta Cars that Were Developments for the C5,A Beautiful Silver(Custom Painted) 54' owned By Roger Crispell that worked for Harley Earl.As well as A Beautiful Big Color Shot from the Archives of the 1959 Stingray Racer/Concept with a Modification to the hood that has a see through Cover and Looks like the same configuration the car had in the Elvis Movie Clambake; The 1981 Turbo Corvette at a Show,The Corvette Summer Car,The Death Race 2000 Car,The Bat-Vette(67'),and a Photo of Duntov and His Duntov Corvette.A lot of Good Stuff in here.An Racing Corvette that raced at Raleigh I've never seen. And a Small Black and White photo of the L-88 Prototype,The Engine inside a White 66' Coupe which is a treat for me.A Color photo of the 1967 Le Mans Dana Chevrolet Entered/Sunray DX and Botany 500 Sponsored Corvette L-88 Coupe In Color!(which I have not seen before, however they missed that Part about that car but the photo is there along with caption/description.)The Photography of Dave Wendt,Randy Leffingwell, and David Newhardt is top Notch. My Favorite is the Racing Section(Chapter on Racing),and the chapters are condensed to include generations together as opposed to generations having separate chapters but that is fine. All in all,This book is a Win-Win and Has some interesting Information and stories I've just come to know, along with the personalities,Culture and Movies(some of which like The movie The Split I just found about.)I am going to cherish this book alongside my 50th Anniversary Corvette Book and Legendary Corvettes Book,A Job well done in my eyes.

I received this book today, and right away I was impressed with the quality of the book and the content of the material. I have loved Corvettes since I was a child, and now that I have my very own C6, I will enjoy this book even more. When I was younger I studied this car constantly. I knew all the racing history, design history, model history, etc. I was a fanatic. As I grew older, my time was consumed by school, work, kids, etc. There was not as much time for Corvettes. This book has brought back a lot of great memories and has created new ones. There are tidbits of information that I didn't know, especially related to the C4, C5 and C6 models. Anyone that loves this car, or is simply interested in its heritage, will enjoy this book. If you want a slightly more detailed review, read the one by Free Spirit Enterprises. Enjoy!

Absolutely one of the greatest automotive books I have ever seen. The quality is great. Great pics that I have never seen before in thirty plus years of Corvette hobby. It is more in the line of a $100+ book than its list of a $50 book

This book is everything I expected being a Corvette enthusiast.
Unfortunately whoever packaged this beautiful book to send to me did not share the same care and enthusiasm.
It was placed in a cardboard box bigger than the book with no protection around the book which allowed it move around and scratch the cover quite badly. This is the first time I have bought a book online, and as it is the type of book I will treasure for a long time I would be reluctant to purchase anything similar online.
