thanks a bunch amazon
The very early photos are interesting, ford did a lot of promoting so people were ready! Name idea considered were Cougar, Special Falcon, Torino, and T Bird II. The car was loosely based on the Falcon. Originally it had just two seats amd was mid-engine.
When it came out in April of 1964 4 million people crowded into Ford dealerships. They sold 419,000 in a year. It got to pace the 1964 Indy 500, they had to have 33 parade cars. Motor tech is given with each model, it is intereting to watch the weights of each as they bounce around like a pop star's weight and the price climbs like the hem of a mini skirt. At one point they observe the car cost a dollar a pound.
But soon after it it no longer the little sportster for everybody as Camaro comes along with a 396 so ford goes with a 390 by 1968, and the car just gets bigger, until Iacca calls it a fat pig.
By 1974 the EPA and the oil embargo causes what Iacca calls the little jewel Mustang II, but has no power so people are not happy.
By 1979 the Fox body is used and the GT returns and goes for several years.
As the years move along there is less to mention about the different models as the same vehicle is produced each year. He mentions additional colors and new wheels. The horsepower increases for the GT to the point that it is as high as some of the initial SVO and SVT offerings as tech is upgraded.
Shelbys, Cobras, the Asc/McLaren, and the Bullittcar are all profiled. It contains loads of information and some production numbers. It concludes with a timeline and an index. The Dominator did not appear, perhaps it was a version of the '84 1/2 version. A true collection of Mustang information. Makes me want to get one perhaps.
