'The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers is a sophisticated introduction to strategies for coding qualitative data...Saldana writes in a colloquial and easy-to-follow style, which is a great help for those not well versed in this area. His plentiful and pertinent examples keep the reader interested and engaged in the material' - PsycCRITIQUES 'Perhaps we could call Johnny Saldana (2009) the Dan Brown of qualitative research...Certainly, this is a man who knows how to decode the mysteries of coding qualitative data. While Saldana's new book, The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers, may not be marketed as a thriller, students, teachers, and practitioners of qualitative research may well find themselves thrilled by the clarity and comprehensiveness of Saldana's text' - The Weekly Qualitative Report

"The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers" is unique in providing, in one volume, an in-depth guide to each of the multiple approaches available for coding qualitative data. In total, 29 different approaches to coding are covered, ranging in complexity from beginner to advanced level and covering the full range of types of qualitative data from interview transcripts to field notes. For each approach profiled, Johnny Saldana discusses the method's origins in the professional literature, a description of the method, recommendations for practical applications, and a clearly illustrated example. Also included in the book is an introduction to how codes and coding initiate qualitative data analysis, their applications with qualitative data analysis software, the writing of supplemental analytic memos, and recommendations for how to best use the manual for particular studies.

"The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers" is an invaluable reference for all students, teachers, and practitioners of qualitative inquiry, and a useful textbook for beginning and advanced qualitative research methods courses in such disciplines as education, sociology, communication, anthropology, psychology, and health care.

This Manual is fantastic: clearly structured, easy to follow, easy to apply, easy to compare the coding methods, easy to integrate the various techniques for coding, memo-writing and analysis into one's own work. I just wish I would have had this manual earlier on in my own coding practice. I can recommend this book for coding-practitioners, students and qualitative method teachers alike.

HASH(0x8df06e64) von 5 Sternen Excellent text on coding qualitative data. 26. Januar 2010
Von Poincare1 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Mr. Saldana has written an accessible and thorough examination of a myriad of coding techniques and tools for the qualitative researcher. The text is highly focused just for that purpose. If you are looking for assistance on building a framework, about the historical or contextualization of qualitative methods and inquiry, then look elsewhere.

The coding techniques are split into a first and second cycle formats. This is a convenient way to organize the coding techniques, as Mr. Saldana has grouped them, but may not be an optimal form of organization for the advanced researcher.

In my opinion, "The coding manual" will help the advanced undergraduate or graduate student with regard to making a decision on which coding technique is best suited for a project. The example coding texts for each coding technique are not excellent, but then it would be hard to find something to appeal to every field. Nevertheless, the examples do clearly demonstrate an application of the coding method in a concise manner. Also, the examples are primarily drawn from the social sciences.

HASH(0x8df090cc) von 5 Sternen Thinking tool 30. Juni 2010
Von B. Stuart - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I found this book while looking for more detail about qualitative research and now find I use it more than anything else on my shelf. It is an accessible and personable look into the fine grain detail of the coding process but also much much more. The descriptions are almost a step by step guide to thinking through a problem. I say almost because the writing is not a directive, positivist command for how to do coding the one, true most righteous way but more of a conversation about collecting data to inform thinking. The examples are both useful and thought provoking. Interesting collections of quotes and citations punctuate the narrative. For anyone concerned about preserving the voice of the speaker, with all its nuance and beauty, this is a must-have book. Already I feel my brain cells getting juicier and juicier as I think more clearly about what I am reading and what I am seeing. I am taking this book to the beach with me on vacation, it is that good!

Von Richard Douglas - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Qualitative researchers of all ilk and methodologies should read this guide. My goodness, what a terrific resource! More than two dozen coding schemes are presented in several categories, illustrated with examples, and ties to specific methodologies are given. This title is the best.

I decided to purchase this book after first reading the reviews and then skimming it contents. It is a valuable book to purchase if you are using a grounded theory methodology for either a thesis or dissertation. This book is helping me as I work through the data analysis portion of my dissertation. Saldana discusses several first and second cycle coding options and his section on memos is comprehensive with great tips on memo content that helps in theory development. I highly recommend this book.

HASH(0x8df09420) von 5 Sternen Thought-provoking, yet process oriented 5. Juni 2010
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Saldana's book is a great addition to my library for qualitative research. I especially liked the balanced perspective throughout. The process of coding could use software applications or paper; he recognized that researchers may feel comfortable with one method or the other, and that any level of automation may depend on the project. The many types of coding were incredibly comprehensive. The two levels of coding helped me understand the analysis process more fully, I am a beginner and this concept was useful immediately. The book was not a tome, it was cogent and well organized. A treasure for my dissertation efforts.
