Kurzbeschreibung

The bleakest winter on record and a gruesome discovery bring DCI David Morton to the Hackney Marshes in search of a clue, any clue, as to the identity of a dead child found near the Old River Lea.

Meanwhile, closer to home, Morton's long suffering wife Sarah comes to the conclusion that her man has been doing more than work during his late nights at the office. As he closes in on the mystery of the boy's identity his life begins to crumble and a terrible wrong is done to someone he loves.

With all of London watching, Morton's impeccable ethics will be tested to their limit as he is forced to choose between doing what is right and what is legal.

Cleaver Square is a stand-alone Police Procedural featuring DCI David Morton.

Well done. The second book by both Campbell's is really a winner. The first book introducing DOC Morton, was a bit of a disappointment, but I am glad I can recommend this one and give it 5stars. No blood and gore but a fantastic book. I look forward to reading number 3'

The book introduces you to DCI David Morton and his team. They are called to the Hackney Marshes where the body of a child has been found. Due to the harsh winter, they can at least identify a time frame. How can a child not be missed? David Morton’s credit card issues make his life even more exhausting. The story comprises several threads which are easy to follow. The main characters are realistic with all their virtues and/or flaws.

With Cleaver Square, Daniel and Sean have created a fine British mystery novel. Cleaver Square is an entertaining and intriguing read, not only for hobby sleuths. I was drawn into the story right away. I felt quite close to DCI Morton and his team. All characters were believable and well described, still leaving a little room for the readers’ imagination. Cleaver Square is a great story for British mystery lovers. Cleaver Square is the second book of the DCI Morton series. The first book in this series, Dead on Demand, will certainly be one of my next reads.

This is a book to read again.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Good writing, bad plotting 16. Oktober 2015
Von hoosier_CPA - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

The authors are brothers who famously write their books very quickly, including editing, etc. It shows. The writing is okay, editing...not so much. But the real problem with these books, this one in particular, is the plotting is so full of holes. Some of them so big, you could drive a truck through them! There are so many times you feel like yelling at the cops, "why don't you look into..." whatever. They seem to miss obvious points, and then you're thinking the cops are stupid. That kind of spoils the story. I think the writing itself is pretty enjoyable. They need to think through their plots more and address obvious issues.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Reasonable police procedural 18. März 2014
Von nick - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This is a fairly well done British police procedural. The usual elements are here. The grumpy but successful DCI who drives his team hard to solve the case. He has personal problems with his marriage, that intervene into a subplot to the main mystery. There are subplots with both his superiors and team. All is going well enough until the author possibly realized he had painted himself into a corner with the plot. Let's then change tack and reveal a glimpse of who the killer might be. I shall not go on and reveal spoilers.

Fans of British crime will find in this an involving story that is written with some brio, but which is at times a struggle to get through. This is because at a certain point in the story, having once revealed the answer to the puzzle/s, the writer goes on further than he should. Then it becomes a question of suspense, because the reader knows more than the characters, but cannot intervene. This part of the book is the least interesting, because the result is known.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A Plot-driven Detective Novel 10. Januar 2015
Von Luccia Gray - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Cleaver Square is a well-plotted detective novel. I enjoyed travelling around London with Detective Morton, I also liked the detailed police procedural and scientific information, including autopsy reports and legal issues. At times it was like watching an entertaining crime film, with all the intricacies of a complex investigation.
The plot was cleverly designed and well developed until the final surprising twist is revealed. It’s narrated in third person, although the narrator is sometimes omniscient and sometimes, takes the point of view of one of the characters, such as Morton or Charlie Mathews, a young boy in a foster family, who is an essential component of the plot which will gradually develop throughout the novel (I don’t want to add any spoilers). The prose was mostly easy and pleasant to read.
It’s definitely a plot-driven novel, because the emphasis is clearly on an external conflict, in this case a murder, and its solution through a specific sequence of events, in this case tracking down the criminal. There is a great deal of action involved, and both the dialogue and the action are mainly concerned with unveiling the plot and solving the issue at hand. In this aspect there is no objection, the plot was correctly and smoothly conveyed.
However, I would have liked to feel more involved with the characters in the novel. I felt like they were saying their lines and playing their part, but I couldn’t relate to them on a personal level.
Overall I’d say that if you enjoy a well-plotted detective novel, set in London, with an unexpected final twist, you’ll enjoy Cleaver Square.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Why Did I Buy All Four?? 9. Dezember 2016
Von Amazon Customer - Babs - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I read all four of these authors DCI Morton series. I'm still left with who the hell is DCI Morton anyway? It was kinda crazy-making that this was touted as the DCI Morton series when there was so little insight into the who of this "main" character.
DCI Morton was somewhat of a jerk who ran around like a Keystone cop. Did not communicate with his team, showed no respect to anyone, when one of his team died, he displayed none of the emotions or sense of loss that any person in law enforcement would feel, especially one in a position of authority. The reader never got the background on why this inspector was so totally out of touch with just about everything and responded as he did. In the event of a duty related death the entire department mourns the loss, this guy? Not even close.
The endings in all four books were abrupt. The fourth book wasn't as abrupt as the others, but I still didn't like it. Also there were unanswered questions and situations never really addressed.
In short, I was not too impressed and won't be reading or buying anymore of their books. Sorry, but I hate reading and feeling like it was all a waste.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Worth the Read, ..Just Barely 9. Oktober 2014
Von AvidMysteryReader - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

"Cleaver Square" is a quick and easy read. Unfortunately, it is not a particularly interesting one. The dialogue is stilted and wooden. The whole attempt is formulaic, possibly because it is a product of co-authors. And one does get a bit tired of the soap opera type side stories, which are intended to define the protagonist's personality.
