Many chess-players find it difficult to improve their game beyond a certain level. They can see basic tactics, know a little about openings and can calculate a few moves ahead. However, so do their opponents. What is the next level, and how does one get there? This book is aimed at chess-players who have progressed well beyond beginner level and have acquired the basic skills required to play at club level, but need guidance to improve their understanding of chess. It is based on the training program that Hall himself followed when he was an up-and-coming player. The lessons are not based on 'quick fixes', but instead provide a well-rounded course in all aspects of chess that will equip the reader well for his or her chessboard battles, and provide a firm yet flexible basis for further improvement.

Don't pass this one up 2. März 2015
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
I can't believe that this book has been hidden for so long, like one reviewer said a diamond in the rough a hidden gem most definetly. I absolutly love this book, its for intermediate players without the help of coaches or trainers. This book takes the reader through all aspects of learning on your own. Axil Smith book pump up your rating is modeled after this book, he was a student of Jesper Hall the layout is almost the same Halls is more simplistic. Chapter 1 starts of on his personal journey. Chapter 2 tells how to analyse your own games. Chapter 3 starts digging in on tactics and calculation. Chapter 4 talks about planning, method of 8 questions when your reach that point in the game of now what ! Great Chapter this one really helped me alot. Chapter 5 talks about pawn structures anotherd great chapter open positions, closed, semi open, fixed structure, mobile and fluid wonderful chapter that ties in with planning also. Chapter 6 finding your way through the terrain of chess, various advantages weakend king position, material adv, better pawn structure, control of a file rank etc better placed pieces, space adv, development adv and the initiative all goes back to those 8 questions another good chapter.Chapter 7 struggle for advantage this chapter talkes about how to structure your search, main theme, ex isolated pawn, weak pawn, inititive etc partial goals- mini operations all things to help you search your own and your opponents position key positions and tactics that suppot the overall plan. Chapter 8 on how to study position types, each opening has its own structure, this chapter talks about studying openings the themes, plans ideas in the opening mainly the isolani structure but also how he Hall studies each opening structure through 7 steps. Chapter 9 deals with just openings using the trompowsky as an example the can structured to any opening study with the authors opening questions. Chapter 10 endgame and overall themes Chapter 11 method to study specific endgames wonderful chapter.Chapter 12 mental training. Chapter 13 on using a computer. Chapter 14 three schemes for training. Chapter 15 on the roll of a trainer teaching others to play. Each chapter ends with recommended reading for futher study to find a book in chess with everything in would be wonderful GOOD LUCK on that i can say that this book has changed my way of thinking in chess, that ole saying if you know something good tell others about i was lucky i stumbled on this book you definitly get your bang for your buck i think so anyway, don't pass this one up. STOP!!! and BUY IT NOW !!!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Refreshing, Insightful Chess Info 5. Mai 2013
Von R. Tobias - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This is one of those little gems, a well thought out, insightful book that probably few chess players have heard of. The author is a Swedish IM who is a very experienced trainer of the very best of Swedish junior players. So if you are looking for entertainment from a famous chess 'personality', look elsewhere. If you are trying to take your game beyond basic tactics and elementary strategic ideas, and want to avoid the beaten path (Silman, Nimzovich, Soltis etc, etc) then this book could serve you very well. He touches on important topics like pawn structure, analyzing your own games, studying typical positons, how to analyze a position (the method of eight questions, a very useful training tool), studying endgames, openings, how to calculate, on how to play with various kinds of advantages, etc. The writing is clear, logical and refreshingly free of hype or the kind of fine sounding but ultimately useless generalizations that are sometimes found in even well accepted literature. There are a few practical exercises, but I think that increasing the no. of exercises would be worthwhile for a second edition, which I hope is coming. 4 1/2 stars, and warmly recommended as an alternative to more famous, but not necessarily better instructional books.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Practical Approach to Improving 3. Juli 2005
Von Terry Hill, Elementary School Chess Teacher - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
You will find this book outlines a wonderful program on how to study, and gives a deep insight into openings, middlegame strategy and endgames. As well as teaching chess I play in local tournaments, and I can say with confidence that this well-rounded approach is exactly what will benefit the intermediate level player most. The chapters on the middlegame will help every junior solve some of the most common problems, and there is a lot of great study material on strategic themes. The section on the endgame alone is worth five stars, as it extensively covers topics you rarely see mentioned in other books.

There is no doubt that after reading this book your general strength will improve, and there is so much material packed in, that it is like having the contents of several books put together. That is my one complaint - there is almost too much material, and it could take several months to do it justice.

The author is an experienced chess teacher, and he shares his methods with a passionate enthusiasm. I found his methods to be valid, and quite insightful in some cases. I would highly recommend this book for both kids and adults to study and enjoy.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Enthusiastic Discussion of Middlegame and Endgame Strategies 31. Dezember 2001
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
What stands out about this book is the enthusiastic manner in which it is written. The author clearly loves chess and this is reflected in his writings. If you've ever been discouraged by the Informator style reams of variations in most chess books, Hall's emphasis on verbal explanations will be a refreshing change. As for contents, he limits his coverage to several key examples or games per section and then provides a set up essential chess endgame positions. Like Silman's Reassess your Chess, the book also contains suggestions for further reading. While the book may look basic, I doubt many people could complete the 'opening traps without a board' excercises. The variations in the games are quite advanced as well. As for me, I'm over 1900 and found this book helpful and, most importantly, fun. While this probably should not be the only chess book you purchase, I am sure that anyone who repeatedly reads it will become a very strong player (outside of Master standards of course). I also like Nunn's Understanding Chess Move by Move, Crouch's How to Defend in Chess, and the Tactical Targets in Chess Series by Pongo (hard to find).

5.0 von 5 Sternen One of the Best Chess Courses Around 29. Mai 2004
Von Ein Kunde - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book will be equally useful for an individual ambitious to improve, or for a chess trainer looking for stimulating course material. There is a tremendous depth to the program of instruction here, with sections on openings, middlegame concepts (closed center, open center, isolated pawns) and endgames (queen endings, pawn endings, knight endings). Computers and databases are covered (2 pages), with the emphasis in that section (as indeed with the whole book) being as much on HOW to study as on the study itself.
A beginner might enjoy this book, but the most benefit will be obtained by players who have some experience but feel they have reached a plateau - a quite common situation in my experience. Gambit is well known for only publishing quality chess books, so this is a self-improvement work you can rely on to improve your game and rating.
