5.0 von 5 Sternen For Corelli Lovers 12. Februar 2013
Von Calicokid - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verifizierter Kauf
This 1968 recording from the Metropolitan Opera is typical of the quality from that time ... before Levine came in to 'clean the place up'.
This 1968 recording from the Metropolitan Opera is typical of four-act performances the New York house presented at that time ... before James Levine arrived and cleaned the place up. The sound is better than a home recording made from a Saturday broadcast would have been. Unfortunately, that also magnifies some of the sloppy performances. Corelli is, of course, Corelli ... thrilling a times but not averse to taking the liberties his fans waited to hear. Rysanek is in fine voice as are the rest of the cast, including the baritone Herlea, here making his Met debut. The drastic cuts made to the five-act score make it almost impossible to listen to anything but the singing ... so wallow in it.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A magnificent performance, but with annoying cuts 3. Juni 2012
Von Narloth - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verifizierter Kauf
Musically and artistically, this performance is great. It may have its drawbacks, for instance, The Great Inquisitor is certainly not the best part for Hermann Uhde, who was one of the best Wagnerian baritones. Rysanek may be slightly off the peak of her glory... Such details, however, are easily outweighed by the overall greatness of this interpretation of Don Carlo. Not everybody may like it, of cause. It is very stern, very dark and how to but it, explicitly non-Italianite (with Elisabetta sung by one of the best Sieglindes of the century and Eboli by a splendid Kundry). A friend of mine who happened to drop in when I was listening to the CD even asked me what was the Wagnerian opera I was listening to =) But the recording is great, both singing and performance. As to Corelli, it is possibly his greatest Carlo, as one of the reviewers has already pointed out.

I give it 4 stars and not 5 because of terrible cuts. I will never forgive the frustration of the moment I realized that my favourite moment of the final duet was missing... Strangely enough, Adler had already conducted a fuller version of Don Carlo, and it was recorded live in 1955. If you like Adler's style you really should consider that recording, it is brilliant.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Corelli Fans Beware: Cuts Are Excessive in Tenor Role 29. Oktober 2013
Von Greg Stanford - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verifizierter Kauf
From the cast list, it seems clear that Corelli's Carlo is the draw here. The best parts of his performances of this opera were always the two scenes with Elisabetta. Here, the music in these is so brutally cut that there is a disappointment around every corner. Some of Corelli's best sections are just not there, making it necessary to seek another performance to supply them. The listening becomes too frustrating to be enjoyable. Why choose these wonderful scenes to do such insensitive cutting? The Met should have issued a warning, considering how few people would buy this set for any reason other than the tenor. The fabulous Corelli and the rest of the cast..Rysenek as Elizabetta..a wild interpretation with blazing high notes! Tozzi as Phillipo, magnificent. Cut to pieces, so see it all as extended highlights.

Corelli...bravo!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Rysanek unfortunately not at her best. Metallic sound 15. August 2014
Von HerbF - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verifizierter Kauf
Plays at a very fast speed with voices at high pitch. Probably the result of fitting the entire opera in two CDs of almost 80 mins each. Pity because it has Corelli at his prime, liberties and all including high D flat at end of duet with baritone. Rysanek unfortunately not at her best. Metallic sound.
