"'An artist, in my eyes, is someone who can lighten up a dark room. I have never and will never find difference between the pass from Pele to Carlos Alberto in the final of the World Cup in 1970, and the poetry of the young Rimbaud' Eric Cantona 'I'd give all the champagne I've ever drunk to be playing alongside Cantona in a big European match at Old Trafford' George Best"

The definitive biography of one of the most extraordinary men the world of football has ever seen

Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
'The Rebel Who Would Be King' chronicles the life of Eric Cantona from his days as a child in Marseilles, to his 'death' -- Cantona's retirement from football in 1997. Though he has taken an admitted liking to Cantona, Philippe Auclair's (an Arsenal fan himself) work stays away from the territory of shallow footballer biographies with their one sided celebration of achievements, instead opting to fully tell of the events (ranging from spectacular to spectacularly horrendous) that contributed to the making of Cantona as a footballer and more importantly, as a man.

Manchester United fans who were around during the Cantona years will enjoy revisiting that time, along with the preceding strokes of luck that brought Eric to Manchester in the first place. (I should note that Eric doesn't make it to Manchester until well into the book; there's a lot that took place before his arrival at Old Trafford, or Elland Road for that matter.) Younger fans will gain a greater appreciation for the man who was such a catalyst in the revitalization of Manchester United as a footballing force. Readers who enjoy (sport) biographies of interesting figures will likely be entertained by this detailed yet well paced telling of events public and personal along with the varied views of people along the way . . . Brian Clough's reaction to the kung-fu kick was, well, very Clough-esque.

The man, the myth, the legend. It's all here in a very candid look at the entirety of Manchester United legend Eric Cantona's career. The best parts of his life story I found were his time in the French League prior to moving to the UK. We learn the hows and whys he was dropped from the French national team. I also loved the fact even after his transfer from Leeds United to Manchester United, he and his family continued to live in Leeds.

My copy has a sticker on it saying it was the "Best Football Book--British Sports Book Awards 2010."

CANTONA,When you read this book you will discover what makes ERIC the star that he was, and the man that he was. Once you treated him with respect and showed that he was wanted Cantona would do anything for you.In Cantona world every thing was black or white, if you kicked him,he would kick you back. When ERIC got suspended by they French football authority he got 2 matches,he though this was on fair just because of who he was, as every one else who done the same thing had got only one match,so he went up to the 3 officals and shouted into their faces one by one, IDIOT,he then got 4 matches that was ERIC, Strange Man, Fantastic footballer.

I think this is a very well written book about an extraordinary character. I did not grow up a Man U fan, actually Spurs.
But Eric Cantona was one of most controversial characters to play in Premier League and at his hey day fantastic to watch when not embroiled
in off field antics.
I wanted to get to know more about him and his pysche.
What is revealing is how he was (mis)treated by French and Marseilles fans so you can see how he had the proverbial chip on his shoulder
even before joining Leeds/Man U.
A gifted but slightly flawed individual, this is a highly interesting read on his upbringing in France and how his career blossomed and faltered
and that is before even getting into his Premier League exploits.
The book does get into maybe too many details about his career in France
but it also gives good insight into how his mind works so will set you up for how he came about entering the Premier League and his thought process and infamously violent side. Overall a fascinating read.

I was too young to witness the genius that was Eric Cantona - he retired in 1998 and my experience with his abilities were limited to Nike campaigns and youtube compilations. Philippe Auclair provides a fascinating and complicated portrait of a man whose behavior, temperament, and personality did not allow for simple description. From his beginnings as a supremely talented teenager hailing from Marseille through his trials and tribulations in his adopted homeland (Manchester, England), Cantona defied convention. Auclair goes to great lengths to describe Cantona - a man who was equally at home hunting alone with his dogs as he was punishing defenders at Old Trafford. Eric Cantona is many things - Phillipe Auclair has produced an excellent account of Cantona the man and Cantona the footballer.
