Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a powerful tool that transforms the presentation of a document or a collection of documents, and it’s spread to nearly every corner of the Web—as well as many non-web environments. In this free introduction to Cascade Style Sheets, you’ll learn how CSS makes it possible for you to completely change the way document elements are presented by a user agent. You’ll discover the origins of this specification and how CSS styles work with HTML.

Learn how you can choose style sheets based on the features of a given media type, including desktop screens, web-enabled phones, digital projectors, TVs, Braille devices, print documents, and even various audio renderings of a document. CSS and Documents is an excerpt from the forthcoming 4th edition of CSS: The Definitive Guide.

Prior to reading this book I had already picked up some basic knowledge about CSS, nothing substantial though. For me this book made a few things more clear and helped me to put CSS in the picture. Everything was straightforward to understand for me. While reading you will, however, clearly recognize that all of the contents are an excerpt from a more comprehensive book. Therefore, I'll only give this four stars. It's a nice and short read, nevertheless, and after all it's free. So enjoy it!

5.0 von 5 Sternen CSS and Documents 7. November 2012

CSS is an acronym for Cascading Style Sheets, ( CSS ) a style-sheet language, is used for describing presentation semantics for structured markup languages such as HTML, XML, and others. CSS and Documents is a chapter excerpt from the upcoming book CSS: The Definitive Guide, 4th Edition, by Eric A. Meyer. Meyer is an internationally recognized expert on the subjects of HTML, CSS and web standards.

The 3rd edition of CSS: The Definitive Guide was published in 2006. Much has changed in web design since then. We have seen the coming of HTML5, CSS 3, AJAX, DOM scripting, CSS pre-processors, responsive web design, CSS frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap, the 960 and other grid systems, CSS resets, shims, polyfills, and minify. Forgive any omissions should my list be incomplete. Suffice to say, we are a long way from the days of table based layout and the font tag.

I found CSS and Documents to be a good read. It's not long at 25 pages. I anxiously await the full book release and recommend this teaser chapter excerpt. Grab a copy for your favorite ebook reading device.

Disclosure: I received a free e-book copy for review purposes.

I recommend this to "ALL" who have the interest in CSS and Web Development!
This book really give the descriptive insight to what CSS is and how it works and how it's not meant to work. Making your development less painful and problematic!
The in-depth detail is there to provide the information needed to properly and correctly get the job done!
I can't say that there was any page here that I felt was unnecessary to have included or was even out of place.

Great Piece of work!

I've built several websites, the first ones mostly built with trial and error because I didn't see the relationship between the CSS stylesheet and the page. Eric Meyer did a great job of clarifying the relationship between CSS page structure and HTML. Especially for those less experienced in website building this book will help you get past common misunderstandings and sloppy code writing caused by a lack of understanding CSS.

I realize after reading this book that I've finally gotten past the mistake of trying to manipulate a page with HTML when I should make the changes in the CSS stylesheet.

Wish I had had it years ago and I highly recommend this well thought out piece of work that goes to the heart and soul of a web page. Recently I created with Concrete5 and realized how much of Eric Meyer's work helped me with the CSS.

My goal was to learn and use CSS this month so I picked up three books. This is the book I should have read last. It is a very good book and easy to read, but it goes through the basics very fast. While I have done basic web development, some of the terms were new to me and would have liked an additional paragraph or slide for an explanation.

I could build CSS into a website from reading this book alone and I am sure most people could do it also.
