I expected it to be an average because it was not very expensive, but as it turned out I got a book which I think is certainly one of the very best.
Let me explain it a little bit.
I learned the "boxes" which is nothing else as a pentatonic scale which is pretty much the same thing what Joseph explain as CAGED system. This is the easy part. And as soon as you can play the pentatonic scale plus the curl notes, plus the blues notes, you develop a real hunger for licks. Just as they say: the scales are the letters, the licks are the words - and if you put the words one after the other you got the story - you got your solo part. So I have spent a lot of time searching for licks on Youtube.
And I can tell you: you can find a lot if you know how to search for it but then at some point you want to have more and better and quicker - so I started to search for books I could buy. One of my first nearly instinctive searches was on Amazon and then I chose a nice looking and not very expensive book, so I didn't really expect anything special.
And this is how this book surprised me so much. The book is really a masterpiece in balance and precise teaching. Very simple and yet sufficient. The licks are beautiful and what's more they are very authentic - something you really need at the beginning.
And the best thing is his method of putting the licks already into the "sentences", into sweet little solos. So what you learn additionally is not only the 100 words - the 100 licks - but also how to put them together and when. This is really good. It really make a huge difference. And so I just want to thank the author Joseph Alexander for this book, for his clever method and I just wish he would give as another 100 licks soon.
Feedback part 2, this time in English. I've now been working with the book about 8 weeks.
The concept is brilliant and is showing results!
I've tried other courses and excercises that either show how to play licks or ones explaining how to play scales. This course is the first one, which really ties it together!
- I've grasped the five patterns system and have learned 2 pentatonic licks per pattern
- Now I'm able to use them against jam tracks in different keys and speeds
- Also improvisation is just "happening", so I'm really enjoying myself
My previous experience: I'm a 57 year old guy who, has been playing acoustic guitar using open and barred chords for many years. I first thought, that taking up the electric guitar would be easy, but the ways I first tried didn't bring much progress.
So, 5 stars for the CAGED system!
Feedback part 3, after 4 months.
I've now started learning the 5 mixolydian patterns.
The 10 (not even close to 100) licks are still paying off. Play them in different tempos, rhythms and starting points and you will have ample material to improvise and jam with. This book together with "The complete technique for modern guitar" covers all skill building for me on the guitar. I've not found better instruction material on the Internet for skill building on the guitar than that by Joseph Alexander. No need to search any more.
