Composites allow SAP customers to develop new business processes with additional business logic on top of the existing enterprise services. But what happens when you upgrade your system? Will your own applications still work or has the system replaced your modifications? This book will teach you how to develop extensible Java applications and extend existing applications in a non-invasive manner. All you need to know about creating extensible applications!

The book provides you as a Java developer all the knowledge that you need in order to build or enable extensible (Enterprise) Java applications. It covers both implicit and explicit enhancement points. While reading this book, you will learn how and when to make your applications extensible. The book mainly focuses on the SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment (CE). It also includes many screenshots from the NetWeaver Developer Studio. However, the gained knowledge can also be applied to Java (Enterprise) applications in general or even more important, the concepts could be applied to any other object-oriented programming language.

The book is very well structured, which definitely improves its readability. Each chapter starts with a short introduction and ends with a good comprehensive summary which motivates you to rethink the just learned topic.

I only give 4 stars as the book promises to cover also topics like Guided Procedures, new BPM engine (Galaxy), Web Dynpro, PI, Visual Composer or Portal, which are all only slightly touched, i.e. you will not gain much knowledge about these technologies when reading this book. However, you also have to keep in mind that it is a book about extensible composite (Java) applications.

If you are a Java (Enterprise) developer, this book will definitely help you to build better and extensible applications. I can really recommend this book.

Brings you to well-founded extensibility decisions

This book brings you down to earth - both because it contains a lot of real business driven use cases and corresponding walkthroughs of state-of-the art JEE code, and because it clearly derives the pros and cons of the different extensibility techniques described.
From an architects point of view, the best comes last: Looking at the different component models to determine the best fitting extensibility approach.
What I however liked best was that all concepts explained in a elaborate and no-nonsense style are derived from productive use, and do not just list their benefits but also openly mention their limitations, specifically regarding productive use, performance and security.
What I did not see really fitting in was the short chapter on Web Service based extensibility, but I suppose every book needs to mentions WS these days.
Still, with such a strong focus on mature Java programming, I would recommend the book since I can now make and argue well-founded decisions on how flexible or restrictive I will design the extensibility approach with my next Java application.

Best fundamentals book on composite applications

Managing a large Java Composite Development Project on SAP CE the book helped me to get an in-depth understanding of composites and the extensibility framework. It is really hands-on and as such provides detailed explanations about the structure of composite development and extensibility concept. The developers like to use it as a reference as well.

The examples are easy to understand and follow as they are very well explained and taken from real life.

This book follows a hands on approach to build extensible applications. It does give you pointers and a quick summary on the theoretical background but its emphasis lies on writing code in a tutorial character.

I got it mainly to sort out web services on NetWeaver 7.11. What shall I say - it was a big help and did provide the answers that I had hoped for. On top of that, I found it enjoyable to read and very worthwhile.
Five stars!
