Synopsis

Sagan speculates on the primitive elements of the human mind and the ways the human brain today is coping with new discoveries about the cosmos.

Klappentext

Carl Sagan, writer and scientist, returns from the frontier to tell us about how the world works. In his delightfully down-to-earth style, he explores and explains a mind-boggling future of intelligent robots, extraterrestrial life and its consquences, and other provocative, fascinating quandries of the future that we want to see today.

This non-fiction book is a keeper. I have been brought up as a Roman Catholic (still am) and have had academic training in the natural sciences in the last ten years. I've probably read "Broca's Brain" a million times already. What can I say? It is so good, clever, engrossing. It has touched upon some of the most mystifying questions that usually crop up in round table discussions among the advocates of the scientific method - about the (seemingly)inexplicable, the mystical or the supernatural. Some churchgoers may find some opinions that the author has on religion upsetting. But, hey - have a sound, open and critical mind. Use it! That, I think, is the gist of the book. But just one thing -- how much of Einstein's science did Einstein really invent? I look forward to reading more of Dr. Sagan's books. I have been a fan of his since The Cosmos series on TV. I was truly grieved to learn of his passing. What could he have said about the 21st century if he were still with us?

This book is constructed so that each chapter can be read as a separate story, independant of the other chapters, which makes this book very pick-up-able and readable at any given time...
This was a stunning, humorous book in which Carl masterfully and methodically goes about debunking mumbo-jumbo theories and beliefs that are apparent even in today's technologically-advanced society. His debunking of Velikovsky is wonderful.
At the same time, with a brilliance and a vision of the near-future, Carl predicts such space missions as Mars Pathfinder, and the Hubble Space Telescope, before their actual construction and launches. His bright and hopeful vision of our place in space is certainly heartening in these days of NASA budget cuts. This book sits by my night table like a primer to science. Thanks so much Carl for bringing it to our lives!

Almost 20 years old at the writing of this review, the methodology of scientific reasoning presentedby Sagan is still fundamental to proper argument and proof. His systematic debunking of Velikovsky's "Worlds in Collision" stands out as a example of how to confront technobabble and pseudoscience in such a way that it does not turn a quack into a martyr persecuted by snobs of the established scientific community.
His brief biography of Einstein provides insights into why Einstein did what he did as opposed to the standard presentation of only what he did.
Some of the text does feel a bit dated and contains some trendy material such as the latest space probe proposals and the relationship between psychedelic experiences and repressed memories of the birthing process.
It is interesting to note that some of the projects that are mentioned such as Jupiter Galileo and Mars Pathfinder came far later than Sagan predicted (mainly due to budgetary constraints rather than any technical shortcoming).

Not only was Dr. Sagan a brilliant cosmologist and thinker, he had a gift for writing and explaining things on a par with Isaac Asimov. The essays in this book will make you think deeply and make you realize how insignificant we and this little ball of dirt we live on truly are!

This is one of the best examples of Carl Sagan's unique capablity to communicate and to make us know of his ideas and reflections on the actual moment of science. Broca's brain is a very personal book and transmits some of Sagan's deepest ideas about the development of the science and consequently of the World himself. He concludes saying that new and amazing discoveries are coming every day and soon, the greatest mysteries of the Universe will be revealed. As allways, this book is written in a simple language, making it a most for the reader that seeks some morel knowledge and culture.Carl Sagan will never die.

Sagan is in his characteristic best. It is especially moving to read Sagan's gratitude at being born into and making contributions to human knowledge at a time when we are just knocking at the door of real enlightenment. Indeed, Sagan explains that we are but in the first minutes of the cosmic calendar with a long way to go, if we don't destroy ourselves first. The essays in Brocka's Brain are indeed coming from an insightful and deep-thinking authority who does not talk down to readers and shares this information as Mr. Keating of Dead Poet's Society shares his poetry, passionately.

Carl Sagan established his reputation as a writer with three works: Cosmos, Broca's Brain, and Contact. Cosmos is renowned as one of the century's best non-fiction works and Contact became a top-grossing, award-winning film. Broca's Brain meets the standard of Sagan's more famous pieces. Even were you to only read one chapter, the book would still be worth purchase. I especially recommend this book to those who have read John F. Haught (theologian) or Stephen Hawking (physicist) and assume that science and religion are locked in a death match.

In Broca's Brain, Dr. Sagan debunks many of the myths that bind us together. He describes various hoaxes throughout the ages; how easily those myths have been perpertrated. And does so without making the reader feel foolish. From THE HORSE THAT CAN ADD, to IDENTICAL TWIN CHILD CON-ARTISTS, to PHONY RUSSIAN SCIENCE, Sagan shows us not to believe what we see, but rather to depend on scientific experimentation to learn the truth. "Theres a sucker born every minute". pt Barnum
