Das Album beginnt mit "Rapid Fire", der gleichzeitig auch der härteste Song ist. Echter, einprägsamer Heavy Metal, der mit schnellen Gitarrenriffs und kraftvollem Gesang daherkommt. Auch wenn der Song sich nicht gleich beim ersten Hören festsetzt, so ist er mit seiner Härte doch einer der Höhepunkte des Albums.

Nicht ganz so hart, aber nicht minder superb der Klassiker "Metal Gods". Hier ist der Name Programm. Zwar geht es eher gemächlich zu, aber dafür überzeugt dieser Song erneut mit starken Vocals und gewohnt gutem Gittarensound.

Nicht ganz so gut hat mir dagegen "Breaking the law" gefallen, der gegenüber seinen Vorgängern deutlich abfällt. Zwar ist der Song an sich nicht schlecht, aber das Lied ist mir ein wenig zu monoton, was besonders am Refrain liegt ("Breaking the law, breaking the law...und das auch noch viermal, oder gar achtmal hintereinander). Gut, aber bodenständig.

Ganz anders "Grinder", für mich der Höhepunkt schlechthin. Zwar auch eher langsam, aber keineswegs leise. Starker Gitarrenriff !

Ähnlich gut geht es mit "United" weiter. Kein Heavy Metal, noch nicht einmal Heavy Rock, aber trotzdem eine wunderbare Hymne mit herrlichem Refrain, der bestens zum Mitsingen geeignet ist !

"You don't have to be old" ist ähnlich zahm, erreicht aber längst nicht die Klasse von "United" und gehtschon fast in Richtung Füllmaterial. Außerdem kann man den Song kaum, bzw. überhaupt nicht in dem Heavy Metal zuordnen. Nett, aber mehr auch nicht.

Besser ist da schon "Living after Midnight". Einprägsamer Song, der allerdings schon stark in Richtung Mainstream geht, gerade auch wegen seiner Disco-Thematik. Trotzdem ein schönes Lied, das mich persönlich ein wenig an "Slade" erinnert.

"The Rage" und "The Steeler" schlagen dagegen wieder die Heavy Metal-Schiene ein. Zwei sehr kraftvolle Songs, die einem zwar nicht unbedingt nach langer Zeit, noch im Gedächtnis sein werden, aber trotzdem wunderbar zum Abrocken geeignet sind.

"Red White and Blue" ist dagegen eine wunderbare Hymne. Zugegebenermaßen könne wir damit recht wenig anfangen, aber das Lied verkörpert Patriotismus in seiner schönsten Form !

Als besonders Schmankerl gibt es noch die Live-Version von "Grinder". Das freut mich natürlich ganz besonders, aber auch allen anderen wird ein angenehmer Schauer über den Rücken laufen, wenn Bob Halford "13.000 Heavy Metal-Maniacs" begrüßt.

Insgesamt also ein sehr gutes Album, das aber nicht nur Highlights zu bieten hat. Aber da sind die Geschmäcker verschieden, schließlich wird von anderen z.B. "Breaking the Law" als einer DER "Judas Priest"-Songs gehandelt.

Nicht streiten kann man sich dagegen über das kreative Coverdesing und das interessante Booklet, das der CD beiliegt, in dem uns Hintergrundinformationen über die Entstehung von "British Steel" preisgegeben wernde. Außerdem gibt es noch alle Liedtexte (auch des Bonus-Tracks) zum Mitsingen. Sehr löblich. Metal-Jünger sollten zuschlagen !

Das Album kann man Komentarlos für sich stehen lassen,denn darüber wurde schon genug geschrieben.Was ich anmerken möchte,ist das die Live DVD um längen besser ist als die 2005èr Rising in the East DVD.Hauptgrund ist die fehlende Agilität bei Rob Halford.Im 2005 Output stand er zu 90 % an seinem Mikrofonständer in gekrümmter Haltung wie ein Opa mit Lungen Steckschuss.

Das war grausam anzusehen,weil er sich irgendwie seine Texte nicht merken konnte und diese abgelesen hat.Da dachte ich bereits das sein Musikalisches Ende naht.

Auch die British Steel fing beim ersten Lied so an und mir sind sämmtliche Gesichtszüge entglitten.Aber ab Titel 2 wurde Rob Lied für Lied besser.Sein Outfit ungewöhnlich in Jeans Klamotten,aber mal was anderes halt.Seine Stimme hat gehalten und Bewegungstechnisch ging das auch in Ordnung.Ich finde den Sound und Bild recht gut.Auch der Rest der Band hängt sich super rein.

Die dazu gehörende Live CD macht bei mir nicht den besten Eindruck.Kommt etwas übersteuert rüber aber alles noch im Lot.

Rundum bin ich sehr froh das ich mir das Teil zugelegt habe.

Die Box ist gut aufgemacht und das Booklet hat einige Live Bilder zusätzlich.Und ist recht informativ.Hätte aber auch etwas umfangreicher sein können.

Schade das die Band nun so langsam ans aufhören denkt und einen Gitaristen schon ersetzen muss.

Eventuell kommt er auf seinen Schrottplatz nochmal zur Besinnung und steigt wieder ein.

Judas Priest haben mit British Steel 1980 den "Heavy Metal" definiert. Dieses Album hat den Test der Zeit überstanden - alle Stück darauf sind heute noch sehr hörenswert und kein bisschen angestaubt. Den Beweis findet man auf dieser Jubiläums Ausgabe! Welches 30 Jahre alte Studioalbum kann irgendeine Band schon komplett live bringen ohne einen einzigen Schwachpunkt? Die Live Performance von Priest hat sich seit ihrer Reunion sowieso von Jahr zu Jahr gesteigert (ich habe seitdem 5 Konzerte gesehen und war jedesmal begeisterter). Priest siehen heute fitter und aggressiver aus als vor 5 Jahren. Offenbar wirkt das dauernde Touren als Verjüngungskur. Show und Sound sind hervorragend! Und endlich habe ich "The Rage", "Steeler" und "You don't have to be old to be wise" in begnadeten Live Versionen! Zum Niederknien! Für alle Priest Fans und auch solche, die irgendwann einmal einen Einstieg in die Welt der Metal Gods gesucht haben, gilt hier unbedingter Kaufbefehl! Ich kann es wirklich uneingeschränkt empfehlen! PS: Mir gefällt auch die Aufmachung der Box sehr gut - stilvoll wie (fast) alles von Priest.

Auch ich kann diese Edition nur jedem Rocker ans Herz legen; für den günstigen Preis eine volle Dröhnung Priest, was will man mehr. Die Live-CD ist wie geschaffen fürs Auto - schade, dass ich kein Cabrio habe. Die Live-DVD hat sich in meinem DVD-Player eingenistet. Ich kann von beiden nicht genug bekommen! Ansonsten ist durch die Vorrezensenten eigentlich schon alles gesagt worden. Aber der Deutsche an sich findet ja immer ein Haar in der Suppe, wenn er lange genug sucht: schade finde ich, dass anders als bei der letzten Remaster Edition die Songtexte nicht mit abgedruckt sind. Aber erstens habe ich diese Edition auch und zweitens kennt man als Fan die Texte sowieso alle auswendig, oder? Ein bisschen Jammern auf hohem Niveau ist ja gestattet. Das ändert natürlich nichts daran, dass diese Ausgabe selbstverständlich fünf Sterne verdient, was sonst?

If like me you remember this coming out its easy to understand why its now considered a classic. After 40 years though I thought id heard enough 'Living after Midnight' and 'Breaking the Law' to last me a lifetime. But having just bought this to complete my JP CD collection - heavens know why this wasn't in it from the start, possibly because I played the vinyl to death, but now I have the CD version I put it on and it immediately struck me how great it still is, fantastic memories of blasting this out in my bedroom as kid, headbanging to BTL at the school end of term 'disco' and to 'Rapid Fire' in Bolton's greatest Rock club SPACE CITY, great memories. And still, with fresh ears I rediscovered one or two songs I least recall and now think that 'Steeler' in particular is such a killer track. If you're a Millennial metaller I'd still say you'll like it whether you're into Death, Black, Speed, Grindcore..... etc etc as its one of those 'Godfather' albums, without albums like this the evolution of Rock and Metal would have looked completely different but certainly non the better. Metal Gods? - how prophetic!

1980′s British Steel is probably the best known Judas Priest album, with classic metal anthems such as “Breaking the Law”, bringing them mainstream success, helped my a change in image, and a shift in tone from their previous outing, “Hell Bent For Leather“.

This ultimately proved popular with the youth. However, compromises were clearly made to achieve this. I do not believe this was their best album, in the same way that I do not believe that “Breaking the Law” was their best song.

Lead singer Rob Halford’s vocals, while still stunning, suffer from poorly written material, and are not quite as sharp as previously. Similarly, the drums are uninspiring, and the guitar riffs lack complexity, giving the album a sense of repetitiveness.

Indeed, while there are many excellent tracks, there is are a few definite “fillers” such as “United” and “Red White and Blue”.

However, there are some truly catchy guitar riffs such as “Rapid Fire” Metal Gods” and “Grinder”. The basslines throughout were excellent, in particular on “The Rage”.

Unusually, the 2001 re-master is in fact quite good (I own the re-master on CD, and the original on Vinyl), and, as a bonus, comes a very heavy live recording of “Grinder”. Even to this day, the album is timeless. Classic metal, and well worth a purchase.

The more commercial songs haven’t aged well, but the rest are all true classics. Play loud!

Seeing Rob on YouTube recently left me with an impression of a singer seemingly bored and disconnected with what the rest of the band are doing. He appears to shuffle on and off when it's his cue to sing and his `bent double' and stiff demeanour gives you acute back ache just watching him.

So I approached this with some degree of caution. Happily, when faced with material as good as Steel it's hard not to rise to the occasion and on 'Rapid Fire' through 'Metal Gods' the band and Rob sound magnificent. As with most of their older stuff played live it now has a contemporary twist, meaning in simplistic terms it's heavier than the proverbial battering ram. This really kicks of as a celebration by the band, as the gusto in the performance carries them nicely through Breaking The Law and the crunching Grinder - even Rob is in a good mood - `Hello everybody' he chirps uncharacteristically after the first two songs. He even manages to stand up straight at one point, propped up on a microphone stand that clocks in at 7 or 8 foot long (I'm not kidding).

However where the contemporary approach is less successful is on the subsequent more melodic tracks such as You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise, United and Living After Midnight, which are more pop/rock songs. Rob's new gravelly and aggressive vocal style, where he clips words, snarls and remains uncomfortably within the high range, lends itself well to the uptempo more aggressive thrashy numbers like Freewheel Burning, Rapid Fire and Steeler, but it sits much more incongruously on the more melodic slower tracks. Also, in terms of the DVD set, the YouTube disconnected Rob does surface. During United the close up on him facing away from the audience (which is an ironic way to deliver a song called `United') shows him tired and drained, whilst the 'Freewheel Burning' section, delivered seated from the motorbike, is bizarre as he hides his face behind his arm throughout much of the song. What makes this odd is that come You've Got Another Thing Coming the more accessible Rob of old is back and he clearly having a ball, now stalking the stage like a caged panther and clearly connecting with the audience. It's almost as if he has taken his 'Metal God' persona too seriously and lost his high camp sense of humour in the process.

So in summary there is a lot of this that works well because it's celebratory and brutally heavy and, for the most part, the band is having a lot of fun running through an album that marked the pinnacle of their creativity. However there are a few parts where Rob's new vocal style doesn't sit as well with the more 'poppy' Steel material. Ultimately, though, when Steeler is unrelengtingly pounding from the speakers it scarcely seems to matter.

One of many defining moments in the career of the Juggernaut that is Judas Priest. To younger fans, outside of the hit single, might feel this album is a bit mellower than the likes of Painkiller but don't be mistaken. This is a heavy album with all the hooks and vocal genius that makes a Judas Priest record. British Steel is another example of the band continuing to evolve with the times but keeping the foundation of what makes Priest... Priest.
