Finally the story of Lila, the magic-wielding mob families and even the monsters of Cloudburst Falls comes full circle. It was a given that Victor Draconi would attack the other families and especially Lila's chosen family the Sinclairs, after the Tournament of Blades. So “Blaze of Magic” starts right after the tournament and the atmosphere is tense, everybody holding his breath and waiting for the other shoe to drop. And yes, in the blink of an eye, all hell breaks loose and it doesn't stop until the war Draconi wanted is over.
So yes, there is a lot of action and the plot is fast paced, after the first few chapters of building tension are done. And when the action started, I loved the book, every minute of Lila showing them what she was made of – and she is made off fierce stuff! The other characters are all there, but this is Lila's show, and her endgame. And I loved the integration of the monsters: giving them a more prominent role in the destiny of Lila and the town made the plot and Lila a bit more special. What I did not appreciate were the “too stupid to live”-moments Lila and others were having. I saw Victor's plan from miles ahead and all those strategically versed people were sitting there, stunned and with their mouths open. And then there was Victor himself, who didn't strike me as the multi-dimensional character in the first two books, but here he was downright the Bond-villain, if you get my meaning. Blabbing and doing the great final speech and stuff. That was... not so cool. But none of it really matters, I have to admit: the book is a cool and satisfying end to Lila's story.

While I have read the previous two books in this series, this book brings everything around to an epic conclusion and as far as it being YA it would seem to skirt that definition closely because the level of violence and bloodshed is only tempered by slightly less graphical descriptions and the lack of sex and profanity.
The overall plot has been teasing us since book 1 and was carried to a very satisfactory conclusion, the romance was a very low level thing and as I mentioned the sex and profanity was nonexistent which for a series billed as YA that was done masterfully without the reader feeling like there had been a ton of "editing" to make it YA.
Our erstwhile heroine was magnificent but at times the bad guys seemed overly stupid. The secondary characters were done very well and while not really done in-depth they were far beyond cardboard cutouts.
Bottom Line: This was exactly what you have been wanting if you read the first two books and if you did not, why are you reading this? Sometimes it is nice to have a story that generally turns out the way you want it to turn out. I give it 4 Stars and depending on your level of enjoyment you might want to give it a bit more. Highly recommended as a series and this book as a worthy conclusion.
She fights one of the worst evils, she has ever known. But she is reminded time and time again, that she can do it. She is basically the chosen one, the one that could get rid of Victor once and for awhile. That’s a lot to put on someone shoulders. Especially, at her age.
There’s a reason I didn’t give it five stars. I do love this series and I feel for a YA. It’s really great for the genre or anyone who loves a good YA. It’s exciting, thrilling, and nail biting. There were a few times I wanted to skip, so I could see what happens to Lila. It’s just that the writer, had a tendency to rehash the previous books. I get it; if it’s been like a couple years since the last was published. But I had just finished the second. I didn’t need six chapters of remembering who all the characters were, or what had happened.
Britney Pressley, is an outstanding narrator! she really gave each character their own voice. You weren’t thinking about anything, but the story itself. It was really easy to get lost in the story, with her narration.
Overall, I give this story Four Boundless Stars.
The first two books were really building up to what I imagined would be some sort of epic fight or showdown....so let's just say I had some high expectations. Jennifer Estep did not disappoint! I don't want to spoil anything but everything I've been waiting for concerning the families and long planned revenge and epic fights...it's all here. And we can't forget some spectacular run ins with monsters, I love that element in this series.
There is some continuing romance but it's definitely not the main focus of the book. The books is filled with action, magic, and excitement. I finished this book feeling satisfied with the way the story played out in every way! So, if you haven't read this one yet then I recommend you not wait any longer, and if you haven't started the series yet....what are you waiting for!?!
The book does not have very many plot twists. A few mishaps are thrown in the way of Lila but generally it is a pretty straightforward adventure leading us to the, not entirely unpredictable, conclusion of the trilogy's overall story arc. As I wrote there is plenty of action and adventure as well as a wee bit of romance. The book pretty much follows the same style as the other two books in the series.
The writing is good in the usual Jennifer Estep style. Although the plot felt a bit more straight lined in this book it was certainly good enough. I quite liked the world building in all three books and the magical and monster filled world that the author have created. It has to be said though that most of the monsters were rather friendly creatures, at least if you paid them their tribute. Something the bad guys were been known not to do of course.
Overall the Black Blade trilogy was an enjoyable and relaxing read bringing me back to the adventure stories I used to read or watch when I was younger. A quite pleasant experience.
This book has it all fully fleshed characters, good dialogue, great world building. Add good plotting, mystery, action, wry humor (one of the things that makes reading a Jennifer Estep book so good,) a little romance, derring do, heroism...long list.
Do yourself a favor, buy, read enjoy- set aside some time as you won't want to stop reading until the very last word- and wish for more. Check out her Spider series.
If you have read the series, keep your eyes peeled...you'll know why when you read it.
