Boring Meetings ist eigentlich der falsche Titel, denn es geht hier um schlecht gemachte Meetings, ineffiziente Meetings, miese Meeting-Kultur, Mißbrauch von Meetings.
Manche Meetings nerven wirklich. In manchen Unernehmen nerven alle Meetings. Manchmal sind sie nur Zeitverschwendung. Aber manchem Unternehmen kosten schlechte Meetings die ihre Existenz. Denn Meetings sind notwendig, ein exzellentes Mittel um Probleme zu lösen, Teams abzustimmen, Projekte zu koordinieren. Aber schlechte Meetings erreichen das Gegenteil.

Man kann nicht in einer kurzen Rezension alle Ratschläge skizzieren, die dieses Buch enthält. Denn es sind viele, sehr viele.

Gegliedert nach so ziemlich jedem denkbaren Problem, dass man mit Meetings haben kann (Beispiel: Kapitel 4: "Wie tägliche Meetings nerven" Unterkapitel: Mangelnde Vorbereitung, Keine Agenda, Kein Follow Up, Termine finden, falsche Uhrzeit, zu viele Teilnehmer (Overinvitation), Beginn mit Verspätung, Hund-von-Leine-gelassen-Sysndrom, schlechter Besprechungsraum). In dieser Ausführlichkeit geht es weiter bis Kapitel 8 (Über Projektmeetings, Powerpoints, unendlich andauernde Meetings, Störungen, Gastsprecher, Videokonferenzen, Conventions und Deja-vu-Meetings, usw.) Und dann zu jedem Problem, ca. 5-10 Gegenmaßnahmen (SRDs suckification-reduction-devices). Da ist für jeden was dabei.

Der häufigste Rat: "Get out"
Das geht in die Richting, ereziehen Sie die andere Meetingteilnehmer, Kollegen, Chefs, inde Sie sagen "Ich hab noch wichtiges zu tun, ruft mich an, wenn das Meeting wieder produktiv wird. Dann bin ich sofort wieder da." Das erfordert natürlich ein ziemlich toughes Auftreten. Das kann nicht jeder.

Talk all you want about competiting with foreign companies, the impact of the health care bill or how wall street gets away with murder, the real corporate robber of productivity is the meeting. Petz hits it out of the park! Reading this book reminded me of the dozens and dozens of bad meetings I wanted to forget. It should be "a must" read for anyone who really cares about getting more done in less time. While it is a good read from beginning to end, I plan to use the book as a reference guide as I call or am called to a meeting. Lots and lots of good stuff. It is already on the shelf next to my desk with the other guides I use on a continuing basis. I only hope Petz tackles the next drain on American business... sucky presentations.

I have NOT read the book yet. But because Amazon hasn't quite mastered the fine art of providing relevent rating choices beyond the primitive 1-to-5 Star approach, I'll give it a three, just to be fair.

I'm torn. I want a HOW TO book for effective meetings; I like humor (FUN is in deeply embedded in the culture of my company); we have LOTS of meetings; and I like clowns, except after dark. [See Maxim's review and the author's response to it.]


1. The majority of the 5-Star reviews for this book are from April 2011...

2. ... most within days of one another...

3. ... mostly from folks who've reviewed ONLY this book...

4. ... which often means one thing: they're the author's brothers, sisters, in-laws, co-workers, employees of the publisher...

[Note to Authors: If you're going to have your soldiers go out and recruit for you, at least spread 'em around the calendar a bit. Unless you're CERTAIN your book is going to get HUNDREDS of reviews beyond your loyals.]


A. Maybe the first edition arrived on Amazon's shores in April 2011...

B. ... and the 5-Star reviewers are folks who bought it on-the-spot because we ALL know that most meetings suck...

C. ... AND it was SO good they were each compelled to write their first product review ever...

D. ... and it's the ONLY thing they've ever purchased from Amazon, hence their ONLY product review since...

E. ... which is ENTIRELY possible because we ALL know that most meetings SUCK. (Did I say that already? Sorry.)

So, you see why I'm TORN. Do I give it a shot? Or, do I pick one of the other How To's?

This book is a wonderful resource for anyone who runs or attends meetings. It is relevant, full of great ideas, and fun! I can't believe how many of the author's examples come up in our meetings everyday. I think I've just grown to accept the fact that I will lose time attending these meetings. Now, thanks to the author's suggestions, I see that there are things that I can do to minimize that lost time.

As most of us know, business meetings of any kind are generally boring, mundane and virtually unnecessary. In motivational keynote speaker Jon Petz's book "Boring Meetings Suck," there are easy ways to reverse those attitudes by his "get it, get it done and get out" application mantra.

This two hundred and twenty page hard cover book has red and black doodles of scribbled titled words on lined paper on the front jacket with six reviews on the back and book descriptions in the inserts including an author biography. In addition to contents and forward pages, there are acknowledgments, about the author and index pages. There were no noticeable grammatical or typographical errors.

In his book, Petz drives the point home that too much time and effort is wasted in company meetings, conference calls, webinars and even group brain-storming. He blames it not only on the person running the meeting but also the attendants. He cajoles, mocks and begs for all participants to realize the utter waste in these unproductive meetings and to either stop doing them or make them more interesting. He provides simple answers to making them exciting, purposeful and entertaining.

He touts that cell phones should be turned on, games played to promote participation for individual and group interactions, white boards used and everyone be on the clock for starting and ending the meetings. He comes up with innovative ways for not only the facilitator but the attendee to accept their responsibilities in every meeting they attend.

Gone are the days of overdone PowerPoint with read aloud, following the words productions or cutesy animated artwork. It gets down to the nitty-gritty of actually accomplishing something during a meeting by suggesting whomever comes in last takes notes (thus the paper is passed on as the next person enters the room), removing all chairs in the room so everyone has to stand and think at the same time and promoting polling through social media. He also includes several helpful and informative websites for further references.

It is an excellent resource for the person heading the meeting as it gives detailed instructions and recommendations on how to have a successful, meaningful, productive meeting, and attendees are challenged to learn how to change the meeting's dynamics, give constructive criticism and even leave the room if necessary.

The book is recommended to be given to all upcoming and seasoned sales managers, set-in-their-ways business owners and even small group speakers along with anyone who has to attend such boring events and need viable resources to get out of them.

What Jon brings to the stage and the page is his ALL. Jon's take on a quiet epidemic is useful, funny, insightful and a fresh take on an old topic. I enjoy the challenges and solution that come from a state certified optimist in an often fickle world.
I utilize several of the activities with the you women and men I work with and when I happen to have the book with me and I set it down there is always (yep always) someone who spies "Boring Meetings Suck" who laughs or grins with a "that is so true" remark)
