Kurzbeschreibung

Book five of Wicked Play

It's been twenty years since Rockford Fielding's father punished him for kissing another boy. Now a grown man with a military career behind him, Rock continues to deny his true desires, even while working security at The Den, the most decadent sex club in town. But after a year of watching gorgeous Carter Montgomery come and go on the arms of other men, Rock can no longer resist the cravings he's denied for so long.

Carter has just four months left on his contract with an escort agency, and he doesn't know whether to feel relieved or afraid. Being an escort is all he knows. Adding to his confusion is the way his latest client, the sexy but stoic Rock, makes him feel things he hasn't wanted in years.

One charmingly awkward date turns into two and soon the men are meeting off the clock. But with Rock in the closet and Carter unsure how to pursue a real relationship, how can they build a future both in and out of the bedroom?

Inhalt: *****

Februar 2014
Von RVAbooklover - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I have read all of the preceding novels in this series. I can tell you emphatically, as good as they were, Bonds of Denial is head and shoulders better than the first four books. I should also confess that M/M fiction is not my normally my preferred genre. I had preordered this book after I read the others, and did not know who the book was about. I don't dislike M/M on principal or anything, I just haven't read many in this genre that I like, or find believable. That said, Bonds of Denial is one of the best (of any genre) love stories I have read in quite some time.

Very Brief Synopsis - Rock, the hacker extraordinaire, employed by the BDSM club the series revolves around, can't deny his attraction to Carter, friend to Tyler from book 4, any longer. Sounds simple enough, right? Except Rock is so far in the closet, he can't admit to himself he is gay and Carter is a male escort/prostitute. Slowly, slowly, s-l-o-w-l-y, Carter breaks down Rock's walls. Then Carter's reality slaps him in the face, and he has a massive "I'm not worthy" breakdown. Can Rock break through Carter's insecurity the way Carter broke through Rock's walls?

What worked - Everything worked. Rock's reluctance, his shyness, his inability to give in to the attraction to Carter, the way Rock's yearning for Carter was expressed...Rock's gradual admittance and acceptance of himself and his orientation, his deep affection for Carter, his fear of the reaction to his disclosure from his family and friends and ultimately, his fear of losing Carter to his own demons...Beautifully written and portrayed. **Edited to add - Rock's awkwardness in questioning Carter's motivations was by turns hilarious and cringe inducing. Carter had a lot of barriers to overcome, to say the least!

Carter was perfectly written. Like a lot of people, Carter kind of fell into his life. After making a choice years ago to help him survive, it became easier to just go with the flow than try to make a change. Tyler said it best - "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know." The fear Carter feels in attempting to walk away from his well-paying but emotionally devastating escort job is realistic and believable. Don't we all fear the unknown? We judge people who have lifestyles that are not as socially acceptable, and we wonder why they don't walk away... well, Ms. Aicher presents the other side of the argument in a frank, nonjudgmental way.

The romance between Carter and Rock was beautiful. Their attraction to each other was immediate, and only grew as we got to know them. They talked, and shared their dreams and their sorrows. There was no rush to intimacy, but once they got there, wow! The emotional connection was every bit as strong as the physical. The love story grew naturally, and did not feel forced at all. Carter was supportive of Rock, and Rock was very supportive of Carter. They both took steps to help the other. It looked like love, and felt like love. SO well done.

As an aside, a lot of modern romances have an immediate intimacy and not so much growth of a relationship. Until I read Bonds of Denial, I didn't remember how nice the slow build can be, and how much I have missed it.

What didn't work - Carter's meltdown went on a bit too long, but it all worked out in the end.

Bottom line - Regardless of your genre preference, if you enjoy a good romance, you will love this book. Time and money well spent. Note - Although the first 4 books in the series were heavily slanted to the BDSM scene, this book is not BDSM-centric, just a mention here and there.

HASH(0x9cbd5e34) von 5 Sternen Probably the best Wicked Play title yet. 4. Februar 2014
Von Marleen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley

When I finished my review of ‘Bonds of Hope’ I mentioned I really wanted to read Rock’s story. The tough and standoffish man in charge of security at The Den had intrigued me more with every subsequent ‘Wicked Play’ title. Sometimes wishes come true and this one not only got fulfilled, it also exceeded all my expectations and hopes. In fact, I think Rock and Carter’s story is my favourite in this series so far.

From the very start of the book it was impossible not to fall a little bit in love with both Rock and Carter. The courage it takes for Rock to, after 34 years of denial, at last acknowledge his feelings and explore his gay nature is astounding and Lynda Aicher does a wonderful job describing the struggle inside this man. The conflict between his attraction to Carter and his need to explore that feeling, and the shame and fear he experiences just thinking about the fact that he actually is attracted to another man was both powerful and heartbreaking. Carter’s patience with the man who doesn’t seem to be able to admit to his wants and needs was tender and beautiful even before they exchanged their paid encounters for simple dates.

There’s so much angst in this story. We’re 26% into it, watching Rock’s third meeting, be it first date, with Carter before he can admit out loud, to both himself and the man he hungers for, that he is gay. But once Rock takes that first step, there is no holding him back. A weight has been lifted of his shoulders and for the first time in his life he feels as if he is allowed to be who he is.

“Each step was one more away from something and closer to another. That was always true, only this was the first time he was actively looking forward to where he was going.” - Rock

Carter’s character is equally beautiful. When we meet him we’re introduced to a confident man, not ashamed of what he does for a living and compassionate enough to take the time it takes for Rock to come to terms with his needs. It is only as the story unfolds and Rock and Carter get closer that the escort’s insecurities surface. Fourteen years in the business have left their mark. Carter may claim to be unashamed of his work he is not sure he is able to live without it. What is more, he can’t help being afraid that sooner rather than later Rock will leave him because of it. He knows that good things don’t last for people like him and it isn’t long before he is pushing the man he is falling for away, convinced that it is better to reject than to be rejected.

I loved when the roles reversed. Rock, his decision made had no doubts and was prepared to burn his ships behind him if that was what it took to live the life he was meant to live with the man he has fallen for. When Carter’s insecurities threaten to tear them apart it is Rock who has the patience and courage to do what is necessary to proof that his love is real, that he has confidence in his lover and wants to spend the rest of his life with him.

“Thank you”, he mumbled. “For what?” “Holding me”. “Anytime”. Rock said, his arms cinching tighter. “Anytime.”

The lengths Rock goes to go to in order to proof both his willing embrace of his true nature and his love for Carter had me reading with tears in my eyes.

“I’ll always come back for you. Always.” – Rock

Tears that returned when, at long last, Carter was able to believe his lover’s feelings and commitment.

“God, I love you. I don’t know how I got you, but I am never pushing you away again.” – Carter

While this series may be set around the owners of a BDSM club, this book doesn’t contain any elements of Domination and submission. And this story didn’t lack anything as a result. In fact, throwing the BDSM dynamic into this story on top of the angst and the M/M story-line would probably have been overkill. This was a perfect read; fantastic characters, a wonderful romance, a captivating and believable story and lots of realistic angst. I really couldn’t ask for more.

The knowledge that we’re nearing the end of this series leaves me kind of sad. I will miss these characters, their friendships and loyalty and, most of all, the wonderful stories. Thankfully there are two more “Wicked Play” books to come before I have to face that moment. I’ll be first in line to get my hands on them as soon as they become available.

HASH(0x9c9dd324) von 5 Sternen Fantastic read! LOVED it! 13. Februar 2014
Von Shirley Quinones - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Rating: 5 stars

I have read all the books released on this series and I can confidently say that this one is by far my favorite.

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this story!

First, I commend author Lynda Archer for not pulling her punches when she decided to tell Rock's story. As I got to know him from the previous installments in the series, I became curious about him. I do admit that this was not the story I was expecting when I'd heard that his story was going to be next. However, this was even better than what I could have imagined.

Gritty. Edgy. Emotional.

Rock's story was packed full of overwhelming emotions which ranged from mildest form of clarity as he discovered what he needed to do to make Carter his to the profound sense of freedom at finally accepting himself all through to the extraordinary sense of loyalty he had for Carter. This man grew throughout the story and I loved every minute of his growth.

Frustration. Longing. Lust. Acceptance.

I loved Carter too. He was patient, considerate and understanding of Rock. I loved his confident side just as much as I loved his vulnerable one. He was confused, conflicted and all around a mess. His needs clashed with his fears driving him to the brink of madness with Rock as his only form of support. But how does a man who has had to make a life for himself let go of his fears to rely on another man? He knew that what he had found with Rock was real, but it did not stop him from messing it up anyway.

Patience. Confessions. Betrayal. Courage.

Lynda Archer brought together all the elements I have come to expect from the M/M genre to make this an intense romantic read. She took a difficult subject and brought all the emotions and consequences it entailed and blended it together with need, lust and longing to bring forth a story of acceptance and new beginnings. I loved it and enjoyed from start to finish. The dark, the light and everything in between.

Although Bonds of Denial is the sixth book in the Wicked Play series it can certainly be read as a stand alone since it deals with Rock and Carter's story.

Carter Montgomery and Rockford Fielding’s lives are similar yet very different. Twenty years have passed since a man has tempted Rock. Each night, he watches over the Den through his monitors as others fulfil their every desire. All the while denying his true desires; Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell has been a part of his life for so long. Even now with his prominent military career behind him those cravings go unfulfilled. That is until his growing fascination with a frequent guest at the Den snags his attention. Each time Carter visits the Den Rock’s fascinations grows.

Carter is weary when, with only four months left on his contract, he is assigned a new client. After a very awkward encounter with his new client, Rock, he is left feeling uncertain. The second date goes a little smoother but leaves both men wanting more. Deciding to see each other outside of the agency – is a first for both.

This book can be read as a stand-alone. I was impressed with this story. This is more than just your typical erotic romance, it has an incredible story and amazing dialogue. I was impressed with Lynda Aicher’s writing style.

I read all of the books in this series and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. I felt that story between the two main characters here was nicely written and included many of the concerns, challenges and issues a couple like this might face. The books need to be read in order, as Ms. Aicher does incorporate characters from one book into the next. This is a nice community built around a BDSM club. There are explicit steamy scenes but these books are really character driven. If you are not shy I highly recommend these books to 18+ y.o.readers. Enjoy The Den!
