"Osprey Publishing and Warlord Games have joined forces to produce the latest 28mm World War II miniatures game Bolt Action, which pits players against each other, fielding platoon-level forces from various stages and theatres of the War. This sleek, elegant, and simple ruleset is sure to take its place in the historical wargaming community, as it provides a tournament-grade system in a scale not yet seen standardized. The main rulebook contains everything a player needs to start playing, minus dice and miniatures. It includes four standard army lists for players to choose from featuring Germany, the United States Army, the British Commonwealth, and the USSR. Each army list gives players plenty of options to build their army." --Game Trade Magazine

"...provides all the rules needed to bring the battles of World War II to a tabletop game, and is a pick for any who would re-enact army encounters."
- James A. Cox, The Midwest Book Review

Written by veteran game designers Alessio Cavatore and Rick Priestley, Bolt Action provides all the rules needed to bring the great battles of World War II to your tabletop. Using miniature soldiers, tanks and terrain, you can fight battles in the shattered towns of occupied France, the barren deserts of North Africa, and even the sweltering jungles of the Pacific. Players get to decide which of the major or minor World War II powers they would like to represent, and then construct their armies from the lists provided. Army options are almost limitless, allowing you to build the kind of army that most appeals to your style of play, from heavily armored tank forces to lightly armed, but highly skilled. The choice is yours. Created as a joint project between Warlord Games, the premiere historical miniatures company, and Osprey Publishing, the leading independent military history publisher, Bolt Action is sure to be the most popular new wargame on the market.

Habe die Kindle-Version dieses Buches als Ergänzung zu meinem Buch besorgt, damit ich nicht immer die Bücher mitnehmen muss. Lohnt sich, zumal Osprey die Preise gesenkt hat

4.0 von 5 Sternen A great WWII game from Warlord Games and Osprey 6. November 2012
Von D. Cashin - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe Verifizierter Kauf
If you like a gentleman's approach focusing on maneuver not minutia this is the WWII rules set for you. Bolt Action focuses on WWII infantry fights with a wide array of supporting weapons from heavy machine guns to calling in air strikes. Game play starts by selecting an infantry platoon or company reinforced by supporting guns or tanks. The game is usually played on a 4ft x 6ft game table with about 40 to 80 miniatures on each side. Though focused on the infantry platoon the rules are clean enough to easily fight large battles with hundreds of models in a reasonable amount of time.
For each unit you and your opponent select (each squad, gun team or vehicle etc) you place a marker or colored die in the orders cup/ bag. Players draw at random and whoever's color is drawn that player selects a unit and issues an order. Units fire, advance (move and fire), run (move twice), ambush (overwatch or opportunity fire), rally a pinned unit, or down (take cover). Selecting who and when to fire and advance or ambush is critical. As units are shot at they can be pinned and take casualties. Pinning reduces a unit's effectiveness. So, as in any good infantry battle, the object is to pin down and attrite your opponent before assaulting and seizing your objective. Units then close assault their opponent. It is critical to pin and damage your target multiple times and reduce their combat effectiveness before closing. Though not as highly detailed as other rules sets, Bolt Action allows for differing rates of fire, different armor penetration and covers a wide range of infantry weapons, AT weapons, artillery, guns, machine guns, and a broad variety of tanks, vehicles, and air support. Bolt Action also covers assaulting and fighting within buildings and fortifications. Though it may not satisfy the needs of the gamer or enthusiast who insists on differentiating between every variation of armor, weapon, unit etc Bolt Action fully captures the flavor and pace of WWII infantry combat. Bolt Action, as with most of the excellent rules developed by Warlord Games, the gamer spends his or her time playing and maneuvering rather than rolling dice, consulting tables and sorting through long multi-step simulation processes to get to a result.
Do not be intimidated by the thickness of the book. There are not a lot of complex rules. The bulk of the book is pictures and diagrams, discussions about the hobby, and unit construction. The clear open outline format of the book makes the rules clear and not dense on the page. The production quality is excellent. Well constructed, well written, lots of beautiful pictures, excellent clarifying diagrams, very good tables. The rules are well structured focusing on the basics in the beginning chapters and expanding on the various supporting equipment in the second half. The rules are meant to showcase colorful eye catching terrain and 28mm miniatures and favors moderate to dense terrain. Though it will play well for infantry clashes in North Africa or the Russian steppes, as in real life, the team with tank support will dominate the battle on open ground. Bolt Action fits well with the tone and intent of Warlord Games other rules, Hail Caesar!, Pike & Shotte, and Black Powder. The emphasis is on relaxed simplified fast friendly play and not fussy awkward and tense tournament style rules.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A set of rules that captures the essence of miniature war gaming 14. November 2012
Von Coprolite Golem - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Gebundene Ausgabe
Its not pointlessly complicated or overly wordy, instead everything is neatly set out - clearly and succinctly explained.
You wont be stuck on what to do next or become lost in text as it doesn't beat around the bush. It doesn't skimp either.

It is obvious that the game has been play tested because of the tight mechanics that make each unit count.
This is achieved thru rules on morale, intuitive combat modifiers, and a flexible order system. It is able to bring together "realism" and depth along with simplicity - the rules can be remembered easily.

Morale is dealt with elegantly, in a way that makes it important (fittingly); A unit receives a pin marker if another unit has scored at least one hit (regardless of casualties) and for each pin marker the unit receives -1 to each D6 roll to hit, check morale or perform orders; if a pinned unit retains a "Down" order (receives -1 to hit and does nothing) it removes one pin marker and so a badly shaken unit has this alternate option to rally if it is heavily pinned and deems that a successful rally order is unlikely to be achieved.

Any scale of miniatures will work. The rules would do just as well in a sci-fi setting.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome WWII miniatures game. 24. Mai 2013

Great Hardback embossed cover, beautiful artwork and fluff. Rules are straight forward and simple to understand. Works very well with 1/72 scale (22mm) miniatures. A great alternative to Flames of War, especially if you don't like to be bogged down by huge forces and complicated rules. Great for anything from platoon to company level, although it can go much higher, especially if you play at smaller scales. Contains rules for infantry as well as a plethora of vehicles. This book also contains rules to play as Americans (Pacific and Atlantic), British, Soviet, and Germans. Does not necessarily contain rules from special rules for Nisea,
Buffalo Soldiers, Chindits, Rangers, Luftwaffe or anything specialized except in the form of the catch-all "Veteran Infantry." This may be Ironed out in the "Armies of <nationality>" books. I would recommend this game to any miniatures game player (from WH40k to FoW), or WWII enthusiast. Play is between 30-60 minutes on a standard platoon level engagement (2 ten man squads with an officer with a support team and a vehicle.)

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Proudction Value 19. März 2013

The book is well written, illustrated, and printed. Sturdy cover with full color photographs throughout makes this a visual treat. The rules are simple and fast paced making for a fine game. The only caveat I have with the book is that because they limit the actions of the units to six-sided dice, they limit the actual number of action types available. Also distracting is the lack of inexpensive miniatures, but that is not the fault of the book's designers or the company that makes the game.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Worth it! 6. Januar 2013

I'm fairly new to the table top wargaming scene having only played about a year now but Bolt Action is the best I have played yet. I've played Flames of War, Warhammer 40k, Force on Force and now Bolt Action. For starters, I found this book considerably easier to quickly find information and simpler to read than any other set of rules. It was concise and to the point. All have generally similar rules but the way the information is presented in the other books is often confusing. The Force on Force rulebook is especially tiring to read. This book could not have been written any more straightforward. This book contains enough information to start playing immediately without it being necessary to buy any other books right away (if you are knowledgeable about WW2 you probably wouldn't have to buy additional books ever). There are ample pictures of the 28mm(?) figures in the book. I personally hate painting those tiny figures so I upscaled to 1/35 scale model Dragon figures. The battles I play don't usually include more than a couple tanks so the large scale doesn't throw off the dynamics at all. (1/35 scale tanks like the King Tiger are about the size of all a small shoe box -- so more than one or two on a standard play area is a little crowded). Overall this book is excellent, the rules are excellent and this is going to be my game of choice from now on. I highly recommend Bolt Action to aspiring wargamers.
