"Providing lively, state-of-the-art coverage about the vibrant interpersonal core of social psychology, this outstanding collection of original chapters puts the 'social' front and center in social psychology. Written by an all-star lineup of contributors, it is essential reading for social psychologists. Each chapter provides a scholarly overview of a cutting-edge research program and should enlighten readers for years to come. This superb volume is chock-full of thought-provoking discussion and stimulating ideas." Professor Harry Reis, University of Rochester

This volume provides an authoritative overview of the field of interpersonal processes. The study of interpersonal relationships makes a qualitative distinction between relationships in which people feel a special responsibility for one another's needs (communal relationships) and those in which they do not feel such a special responsibility but give benefits with the expectation of receiving specific benefits in repayment (exchange relationships). Communal relationships are often exemplified by friendships, romantic relationships and family relationships. Exchange relationships are often exemplified by strangers meeting for the first time, acquaintances or business partners. The ideas and research into communal and exchange relationships are discussed throughout the nine major sections of the volume on cognition/attribution, social motivation, affect/emotion, social influence and comparison, self and identity, methods, applications and future developments.

Assuming a level of sophistication and prior background in social psychology, each of the 26 chapters has been written by a researcher in that particular field to provide both an overview of classic and current research as well as a description of future trends within the area. The chapters are liberally referenced throughout and include post-chapter annotated bibliographies so readers can access original research articles in order to further their study in the field.
