There’s gold in them thar hills—or more precisely, in Arizona’s Chocolate Mountains, where one hundred years ago a miner stashed a king’s ransom of the stuff. But times have changed. The world has changed. And now the Chocolate Mountains are the home of the largest military artillery range in the world.

Harry’s living on disability and getting liquored up and beaten down. Frank’s a feisty old-timer battling cancer and a domineering daughter. And Ricky’s a good kid in a bad spot, doing everything for family. Together they’re staking what little they have left on a dangerous quest to the Big Maria Mine—and the gold that can offer them a new beginning.

Unfortunately a meth-dealing biker wants a piece, a trigger-happy AWOL soldier wants to play chicken in a live minefield, two stubborn burros want to go home, a starving mountain lion wants his dinner, and the US Army wants to rain on our heroes’ parade with real bombs.

When you’re all out of crazy ideas, you’ve got to try the stupid ones.

Imagine Chuck Palahniuk and Don Winslow’s love child – and that would be ribald author Johnny Shaw. His novel Big Maria is a unfiltered, wild romp in which three men get one chance to find a lost gold mine; the only problem is the Big Maria Mine is right in the middle of a US Army artillery range. I loved this book about people that didn't have much to lose and were not the destiny's favourites, but they show us that they still are capable of courage, friendship, caring. The language they use - and the author chose for them - is rough, rude, but in the end, it didn't bother me any longer. Because I was caught by the story and I just wanted that something good happens for the characters. And - in a way - it does.

I really enjoyed this book. The main characters are poor losers, who are also not the cleverest of people. But somehow you start feeling for them and hoping that for once they get lucky. They try to get to the gold hidden in a gold mine, while not even being sure that the gold or the mine is really there. But as they have nothing to lose, they get started, even though they know that they might risk their lifes. At times you are quite surprised how much they achieve, only for them to stumble across a problem. Some of their problems are due to the fact that the mine is hidden away in a military test area, the others are due to them having no clue how to organise a project like that, or what to pack for a hike that would last at least a few days.
There are some laugh out loud moments in the book - the first pages that you can read for free show you nicely in what style the book is written. It continues like that throughout the book.

It was one of those books where you tell yourself that you'll read just one more chapter, only to find out that you have to find out how the story continues and can't stop just yet.
The reason I'm only giving 4 starts instead of 5 is that a small part of the book made me feel a bit uncomfortable - I really didn't like how one of the minor characters is treated in the book by some of the other more minor characters - it wasn't needed for the story to continue, and I think it should have been done differently. Also at the end some parts (also including those 'minor' characters) seemed to be a bit rushed to me. This is only a small part of the book, but as I really didn't like this part and got quite annoyed while reading it it's not good enough for 5 stars - but very close!

a nice book about friendship. The three protagonists are all some kind of loosers, but with their goal to find gold, life is changing

4.0 von 5 Sternen Initially Off-putting But I Loved It 31. Juli 2012
Von Just My Op - Veröffentlicht auf

The first few pages of this book were so nasty and disgusting that I would have quit reading if I had not been given a copy for review. Lots of profanity, scatological imagery, bodily fluids no longer in bodies, that I'd rather not be subjected to reading - and that's just the first eight pages about Harry, one of the major characters.

Well, I requested this book so I should give it a decent chance to redeem itself. I was hoping for something that might be along the lines of The Sisters Brothers, dark humor about a couple of less-than-respectable brothers that I really enjoyed. So I slogged on.

And I found that I love this book. Yes, there was still plenty of profanity, more than enough violence to go around, huge amounts of overly descriptive bits involving lots of maimed bodies, stinking bodies, more bodily get the idea. And the characters were hopeless losers, no chance of redemption, filled with stupid and impossible ideas. Animals don't fare well but their fates aren't based on intentional cruelty.

So why did I change my mind? The characters. I fell in love with these misfits, with their hopes even while they were telling themselves there was no hope, their resignation to their fates even while trying to change them, their quirkiness. The humor, dark but very entertaining. And the ridiculous storyline - trying to find a gold mine reportedly in the middle of an artillery range, all based on a conspiracy theorist's rantings.

This one is not for those offended by all those things that first put me off the book, but for those who can accept that, the book is very good, funny and touching and quite memorable.

3.0 von 5 Sternen A fun read, if you don't mind bodily fluids and excrement 17. September 2012
Von Silea - Veröffentlicht auf

I admit, i don't think poop is funny. If i thought graphic descriptions of feces, vomit, and other things that come out of human bodies could be humorous, well, i'd enjoy this book and a great number of hollywood films a lot more.

So, first off, if you don't think poop is funny, you probably won't like this book. It's got plenty of redeeming features, but with at least one bodily excretion reference every few pages, the fecal-humor-challenged will probably be happier not even starting.

Second, if you want consistent characters, again, move along. Of the three main protagonists, two are pretty steady (one is even compelling and likeable), but one is about as believable as a car blowing up after a bullet hits the windshield.

But this isn't a serious novel. It's a silly, absurdist story of three losers trying to find a hidden gold mine. Anything that can go wrong does go wrong, hilarity ensues (especially if you think poop is funny), and then more things go wrong. The ridiculousness of the main characters pales in comparison to the truly random supporting characters.

And despite being disgusted (in the bad way) every few pages, i finished this book. Why? Because i wanted to know how it ended. And i admit, i liked the ending. It was worth it. Though i'd have liked it more without the totally unnecessary violence and feces.

In many ways, this book reminded me of Dave Barry's Lunatics. A one-thing-leads-to-another plot of absurd twists, made 'funny' by adding excrement. Not a single page of it is remotely believable, but i doubt that's what the author was going for.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Funny, Poignant, Crazy Adventure--Extremely Enjoyable! 28. Juli 2012

I have to admit, not even a third the way through this fantastic story I was ready to write a 5 star review. I was so entertained in the first several chapters--the characters, the descriptions, and story line--I thought if the rest of the book is blank pages, I'd be hooked waiting for more of Just. Like. This. I held back being the responsible person I am and was not disappointed one single bit! I wish I could give it more stars for being one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read.

Three men's lives separately unravel and circumstances--booze, cancer, and a mule deer--bring them together in a plot to find a gold mine in the middle of a live artillery range. The motly characters are unlike anything I've seen before--I was grossed out one minute, empathized the next, I laughed, and I cheered them on. Other crazy characters--an overbearing daughter "shaped like an angry bowling pin", her 2 stoner sons who are hooked on The Muppet Show, a meth cooker wanting part of the action, 3 dogs (one a meticulous taco eater), and 2 burros who relax to Madonna's Like A Virgin song--swirl in and out until they are all on this crazy ride together. The writing is colorful, extremely colorful, precise and humorous, and could have only been written by an author who has done an awful lot of people watching and/or experienced those he wrote about first-hand. I kept thinking "where did he come up with this stuff?!" Everything about this story is amazing--I loved every single crazy piece of this crazy tale.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fooled Me at the Start 10. August 2012
Von Rick Mitchell - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts ( Was ist das? )
This is a zany yet poignant novel. The problem is that the first dozen or so pages are so graphically gross that anyone with any class would put it down. Luckily, I'm not such a classy person and persevered.

This is the account of three losers: two drunks and a dying old guy who have nothing to live for until they decide to go for gold in the middle of a military artillery range. There is plenty about their quixotic adventure that is less than credible, but there is also plenty that is thought-provoking and emotionally charged. There is also plenty to laugh about as they charge with confidence into danger and the unknown.

These three outcasts and misfits find confidence in each other that gives them the determination to turn themselves around or, in the case of the terminally ill elderly man, to live his last days to the fullest. Through the humor and the occasional gross sophomoric accounts, there is a message about the strength of the human spirit.

The characters are great. Three consist of a broken drunk prison guard, an upstanding Christian young man whose life is ruined so he turns to drink and the old guy with a Nazi-like daughter who wants to "care" for him. There are also two stoner grandsons and other flaky characters along the way.

This book has much more to it than shows on the service; and certainly much more than shows in the first several pages. Hold your nose through page twenty, then hop along for a whacky ride.
2.0 von 5 Sternen Not My Favorite Johnny Shaw Book 2. Oktober 2015
Von Kandy Langford - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Not my favorite Johnny Shaw book...liked the Jimmy Veeder ones more. Not a particularly squeamish person, but a lot of the descriptions seemed unnecessarily icky. Okay, I get it - these are 3 damaged men, but do we have to know just exactly how physically damaged? At least the old Native American guy out of the group wouldn't have been totally distasteful to lay eyes on. I've read more civilized descriptions of unpleasant things that happened to the body in Jim Thompson novels...
