Between Borders is the true story of Harly Drum's thru-hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. At twenty-one years of age, he began walking north from the Mexican border and nearly 2700 miles later arrived in Manning Park, British Columbia.
This book has been prepared in journal form and includes details from 110 days trekking through California, Oregon, and Washington. This hiking adventure includes pictures from the arid Mojave Desert, the snowy Sierra Nevada, and volcanoes of the High Cascades.

Harley writes about his PCT hike and basically edits his trail journal for sentence structure and punctuation. He was about 19 when he went on this journey and rather a courageous act for a young guy like that. However, his father had traveled the same path and he was quite confident. He does not rehash any of the mental challenges or rewards, but basically sticks to the accounting of miles and milestones he passes along the way.

This same author did pen Hot on the Trail which was still a youthful slant but much more entertaining.

I really enjoyed the journal style of this account of his journey. I felt like it gave me some insight into thru-hiking (which I never have done or considered). I am a former wildland firefighter with many years of experience and I recognize nearly every area, forest, mountain, lake mentioned and felt like it made it more enjoyable that I knew exactly where he had been and where he was headed to. I think the journal style made more sense to me as writing a full account of all he encountered on the hike would have taken too long and he would still be out there writing in a tent.

This is the second book for this author and I really enjoy his writings. This book, written in his journal form, really allows the reader to see and feel the experience of a long distance hiker through his own words. You can feel the joy along with the frustrations of taking on such an amazing feat. It is well written and you can tell the man behind the words is connected to nature. I am inspired by his writings and just today received his third book "Summit to Sea". I would absolutely recommend this book to all.

I really enjoyed his story and his writing style but I am giving it three stars because it is only about 50 pages long. It is larger than most paperbacks--maybe close to 8x10--about the size of a child's book, and very thin.

It's pretty much just his journal entries for each day. I did enjoy it more than I have some others that are similar but I wanted more--more story. I hope the author writes more non fiction. I know he has a fictional book about hiking but I'm not into that.

I'm from the east coast and have only day hiked some of this trail around Stevens Pass. It's a beautiful trail. Mr. Drum kept a good trail journal. Having hiked most of the AT I could relate to his triumphs and shortcomings as well as his euphoria in completing this trail. Good job!
