The Best Democracy Money Can Buy contains Greg Palast's greatest hits, and that means some of the biggest stories and scandals in recent memory. Palast is an internationally recognised expert on the control of corporate power who previously worked with labour unions and consumer groups in the US, South America and Europe investigating corporate corruption. Since then he has become a journalist whose investigative reports for the BBC and The Observer are all but banned in the US but that nevertheless pick up awards by the dozen.

The book opens with his report on how Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris allegedly stole the 2000 election for Bush by illegally removing African-Americans from voter rolls. This take-no-prisoners opener sets the tone for much of the book. It is followed by his report claiming that Bush killed off the FBI's investigation of the bin Laden family prior to the September 11 attack-for which he was awarded the California State University's Project Censored Prize for a report too hot for US media.

The heart of the book is about the institutionalised economic criminal activity that is part and parcel of the politics of globalisation. Palast portrays the IMF, the World Bank and the assorted group of agencies as institutions that "dream up, then dictate, the terms of the new international economics" to create what he describes as "the Golden Straitjacket" of globalisation. He produces vivid case studies from across the globe to challenge even the most paranoid of conspiracy theorists. On the whole, the book claims to show that economic "assistance plans" presided over by these institutions amount to a (so far) guaranteed sentence of economic damnation.

As much has been published elsewhere; there is little new here and Palast's strident style can sometimes obscure the finer points of analyses. But this is an in-your-face book with a powerful call to action that will outrage and energise many of its readers. --Larry Brown

Nicht so fliessend wie Michael Moore's "Stupid white men", aber dennoch sehr aufsehenerregend. Leider findet man solchen Journalismus viel zu wenig, und der Autor liefert gleich den Grund: zu teuer und zeitaufwendig! Wie oft lesen wir in unseren Zeitungen schlecht recherchierte Artikel, wo lediglich Pressemitteilungen ohne Hinterfragen abgedruckt werden! Der Autor möchte dagegen ankämpfen und sagt uns, was Sache ist. Als Ergänzung zu Michael Moore, und als Erweiterung. Sehr lesenswert, und sehr verstörend, denn er nimmt uns den letzten Rest an Glauben an unkorrumpierbare Gerechtigkeit!

This book contains very important information, some of it I knew already, some I didn't but all in all it was a good read. My only problem is Greg Palast's writing style. I have to confess that once in a while he got me completely lost and I had to read a sentence or a paragraph a few times before I really understood what he meant. But I loved his sense of humor which I didn't find annoying, unlike other books where the author tries to be funny but often isn't. At the end of the book he says that he got a stack of letters saying that the book is depressing. I didn't think so but well.... it is a book that portrays the world we live in so, if that world is depressing so is the book but if you are aware of what is going on it won't get you down more than you probably were already!

This book contains an awful lot of information about an awful lot of subjects and shows that we live in a "democracy" bought with money and where only money and the interest of the powerful of the world count, nothing else! Greg Palast gives you information about the weird Bush re-election (funny how Al Gore never really fought back but then, would the world have been in a better shape with him? I doubt it!), Lobbygate and all the dirt that went with it and still goes, the truth about the value of immigration, especially illegal immigration (although he thinks that immigration can be a great thing, an opinion I don't share), the struggle of the Bolivians (who at least fought for their rights, something we don't really do anymore in the Western world), the privatized prison system in the US which is now coming to Europe as well and much more! All in all a book worth reading, wherever you live!

Das Buch beinhaltet eine Reihe von essayartigen Fallberichten zu verschiedenen nationalen (US) und internationalen "Skandalen", die auf überzeugende investigative Recherchen von Greg Palast zurückgehen.
So war Palast für den wahrscheinlich ersten umfangreichen Bericht zu den peinlichen Manipulationen bei der Erstwahl von George W. Bush verantwortlich. Diesem Thema ist genauso ein Kapitel gewidmet wie auch anderen, teilweise schockierenden und letztlich bisher wenig kritisch beleuchteten Skandalen wie z.B. die Exxon Valdez Naturkatastrophe.
Eine Reihe anderer Themen sind - zumindest heute und speziell für Nichtamerikaner - nur bedingt von Interesse, z.B. die Machenschaften von Walmart.
Highlights sind die Kapitel bezüglich Globalisierung, IWF und Weltbank, sowie der wenig ruhmreichen Rolle neoklassischer US-Ökonomen (allen voran Friedman) beim Sturz von Chiles Präsident Allende.
Das Lesen des Buches wird für Nicht-"Native speaker" dadurch erschwert, dass Palast die Anwendung von zynischen "Wortkreationen" bisweilen zu häufig betreibt.

Einer der wenigen investigativen Reporter unserer Zeit

Greg Palast war es, der kurz nach der Auszählung der letzten Stimmen zur US-Präsidentenwahl in Florida im Jahr 2000 ein paar Ungereimtheiten über die Unterdrückung des Wahlrechtes demokratisch (in Abgrenzung zu republikanisch) gesinnter US-Bürger veröffentlichte. Vor der Wahl wurden mehrere tausend Bürger, die man dem Lager der Demokraten zurechnen könnte, aus vorgeschobenen Gründen von den Wahlscheinlisten gestrichen. George W. Bush siegte gegen Al Gore mit einem hauchdünnen Vorsprung von mehreren hundert Stimmen.
Merkwürdigerweise wurden diese ungeuerlichen Vorwürfe in den USA nicht veröffentlicht, sondern nahmen den Umweg über englische Zeitungen. Als sie in den USA ankamen, wurden sie nach einer Pseudountersuchung in eine harmlose Version uminterpretiert und zu den Akten gelegt.
Dies ist nur einer der Fälle in Greg Palasts beunruhigendem Werk, das kürzlich in einer aktualisierten Auflage erschienen ist. (Eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche wäre nach dem Erfolg von Michael Moore allmählich angebracht.)
Beim Lesen schöpft man den Verdacht, dass sich auch ehemals anspruchsvolle Zeitungsredaktionen inzwischen weit von ihrem ursprünglichen Selbstverständnis, nämlich investigativ als Kontrolle der Macht zu wirken, entfernt haben. Bestenfalls kann man dies als Desinteresse und Niveauverlust deuten. Im schlimmeren -und naheliegenden Fall- muss man von gezielter Steuerung ausgehen. Die Schwierigkeiten, die Palast dabei hatte, seine Indizien in der amerikanischen Presse zu plazieren, lassen aufhorchen...
Während die elektronischen US-Medien inzwischen jede Eintagsfliege als "breaking news" verkünden, bleiben die wahren Enthüllungen immer häufiger in den Filtern stecken und müssen sich über das Internet oder ausländische Medien ihren Weg bahnen.
Man kann Greg Palast meiner Ansicht nach weder Hast noch Einseitigkeit vorwerfen, sondern muss berücksichtigen, dass er viel Anlauf nehmen musste, um überhaupt gehört zu werden. Da man ihn in Deutschland kaum als Leitartikler kennt, wiegt auch der Vorwurf, die Stories seien eine Ansammlung bekannter Zeitungsartikel nicht schwer.
Wer hintergründiges Material nicht nur über die Bush Regierung sondern über die Einflussnahme amerikanischer Medien und Industriekonzerne auf die Regierung sucht, ist mit diesem Buch gut bedient.

Although a Brit and I like to keep abreast of current affairs I must confess to not having heard of Greg Pallast before I read this book. For those who do not know, like me beforehand, Greg is an investigative journalist who has worked for a number of quality British newspapers and produced reports for the BBC. Likewise, I had never heard of Michael Moore until I found a book by him when I was working offshore and found one in my cabin and decided to read it. However, having read and seen films since by the latter and then seeing his comment on the cover of this book, I was pretty sure I was going to like it before I started. Like MM, it is full of documentary evidence in support of his findings but unlike MM, this evidence is due to the author's investigative efforts rather than a collation of evidence based on the efforts of others.

Although I am always sceptical about the motives of politicians I still found this book a real eye opener and was unprepared for the extent of corruption in the highest places. For instance, Maggie's sell off of the country's silver (the public utilities) was actually due to following the teachings of a maverick professor in a Boston (USA) university. I never realised that the IMF and the World Bank were anything but benign institutions. However, the loans by these institutions come with strings attached. Countries are compelled to sell off their state owned utilities and largely USA-owned buyers snap them up at a bargain price and then increase the costs enormously which subsequently results in profits going out of the country and therefore reducing the country's ability to pay back the loan. A vicicous circle is thus created that keeps the country in debt.

There are many other revelations in this book but don't want to spoil it too much for readers so I'll leave it at that. The only negative I can find is that I think it is a little self-indulgent and the style is a little Americanised for British taste but that doesn't detract from the content. I shouldn't hold the latter against him as Greg is an American although he has spent much of his working life in UK.

Forget About CNN and Fox and Read This

This book is a breath of fresh air, non-partisan reporting for a change. And even if it's not all completely accurate, it speaks volumes above and beyond CNN and the rest of the "most trusted news" media. While the majority of the world exists in poverty and unimaginable suffering, the corporate giants and governments of the developed world are working deals in partisan and monetary interests in a league outside from the working masses. And the real truth behind the visage, who reports this stuff? The corporate controlled media? Of course not. What they report is always bias, snippets of truth sandwiched between slanted stories of corporate and government controlled media.

For years now I've been watching the media and have given up in the bourgeois mind melt of the believing public in a news media that falsely claims to report truth as their main objective. And Palast's book is worth the read. This version is an updated one from the 2002 edition, and was apparently a New York Times bestseller. It's amazing how this book was not prevented from publishing. I mean the amount of weight the many parties involved in the book carry, you would think this book would get lost somewhere, never to be found. But since it's not, I'm glad for the opportunity to read it. It's really a very educational book, to say the least

In this Palast exposes both Republicans, Democrats and many Corporate giants in areas from environmental, pharmaceutical, financial (of course), evangelical and etc. Good information on the 2000 presidential election, the WTO, the World Bank and IMF, Bush, Gore, Robertson and Blair, nuclear waste, oil spills, Wallmart, OPEC and Chavez, BST hormone & etc. Really, you'll get a good education with this book. Of course, there's no use arguing this stuff with the partisan views and fundamentalists, which is like driving a car into a brick wall. And really, if you open your eyes and mind, you'll know that our so-called democracy only lives in a misused, misguided word, which definition radically changes from year to year, while the real meaning resides in the history books.

One thing I do get out of this book, whether it's the WTO, IMF, World Bank and all the Corporations, is that it's the LLM's manifesto on page 283, which states that "leaders who lead today are antique creatures of the Passing World. Today, markets lead. Industry CEOs lead. In the Emerging World, prime ministers and presidents merely 'listen.'" It's as though the new "Popes," with the power of the medieval Popes, are emerging as the new leaders, the corporate giants, who through the market and partisan monetary ventures that only benefit the elites, will rule the world in an unethical, authoritarian structure. Only this time around, with technology, both the environment and extreme totalitarianism are the stakes.

Greg Palast, an American living in England, has investigated a great length major scandals on both sides of the pond your governments don't want you to know about. He covers in great detail everything from the 2000 U.S. presidential election voter fraud in Florida to the Lobbygate scandal that disrupted Blair's cozy time as the apple of the British voter's eye. A must read for those politicoes in the know and easy to read for people who are just beginning to understand and comprehend the duplicities of the governments and/or organizations of the times we live in today.
Definitely worth checking out!

Democracy is the best system of governance.......
Corporations are successful due to all their collective hard work and customer focus.....
Western governments are not corrupt.........
Big Media always tells us the unedited truth......
Standing for ones right against authority is bad.........

I think the world need more Palasts to help us deal with our learned helplessness.
