A compelling love story for readers of all ages.

In the flash and glitter of the Regency Era, a young noblewoman craves to dance not in the ballroom but on stage, blending music, movement, and soul. Will these scandalous dreams destroy her family, or gain her a loving patron?

Lady Daphne's duty as daughter to the impoverished Earl of Scarborough is to be chaste and pretty. Instead, she dreams of being a professional dancer at a time when stage performers are considered little better than harlots. Talent and determination compel her, but discovery would cost her the wealthy husband her parents have under negotiation and ruin her family.

Baron Jasper Pendleton has learned love does not exist from suffering his parents' barely civil marriage. He plans to accept the bride his ambitious mother secured, get her with child, and go his own way, confident there is nothing to be had beyond momentary pleasure. But when a masked dancer's passion inflames his frozen heart, will he follow convention or risk everything to take a chance on love?

This is the first in the Uncommon Lords and Ladies series which follows young women and young men trying to navigate the requirements of love and society in Regency Era England. The second, A Country Masquerade, is available in paper and eBook.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Margaret McGaffey Fisk is a born storyteller whose tales often cross genres and worlds to bring the events and characters to life. She currently writes romance, science fiction, and fantasy but will go wherever the story takes her.

A daughter of diplomats, her early years were filled with many cultures, both very much alive and long turned to dust, and people who both pondered the great thoughts and were grand pranksters. Whether from wild adventures into the desert to climb sand mountains, poking around little known archaeological sites, or visiting bazaars and inner cities, she came out of that time with a love of culture and an all too sharp awareness of culture clash.

She lives in a Nevada desertscape with her husband, and a rotating collection of cats and sons. When not exercising her creative muscles, she has been known to tame the relatives of beasts in the wild--feral cats. In a different time, you'd find her before a bonfire or with a mug of ale and a lute spinning tales for all who are in earshot. Now, though, you can read her explorations of loyalty, love, and conflict wherever you might be.

5.0 von 5 Sternen As good as the description leads you to hope. 17. November 2013

When I read this book's description, I had to purchase it. I don't typically read this genre or era; however, the description was compelling, and the book did not disappoint. Even if you're not sure if this is your kind of book, if you read the description and feel called to read more, do so. You won't regret it.

I don't read 'romance' novels. Not if I can help it. But I consider Margaret McGaffey Fisk to be my friend so I felt I should try. I knew I couldn't go wrong with her writing. I don't think I saw a passive sentence anywhere in the book. This reading comes close after I read of Pride and Prejudice. If this were to be a contest, this would win heads down!

Passion is what wins it for me. No! Not that kind of passion! I mean the passion this young girl had pursued since she was small. But, now that she was to be presented as a woman... She wants to dance, something frowned upon back in those days.

Dawn Hyde, narrator of the Audible version of the book made this book so beautiful! Her accents and voice changes helped keep the characters separated and unique. I look forward to reading more with her voice.

Okay, for the romanticohics, there is romance in the end, but most of it is this girl coming of age and her trying to live out her passions, somehow. It makes me sad to know women of the past weren't encouraged to follow their hearts and passions. When I start feeling like we've made no forward motion in the feminist movement, reading something like this shows we have made some progress.

I am looking forward to more by Margaret McGaffey Fisk!
5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent regency romance 3. Oktober 2013

I'm not generally a Regency fan, but the characters in this come to life for you.
Our heroine, Daphne, starts out as the fairly standard sheltered rich girl, but soon stretches her wings and learns both how sheltered her life really has been, and that life out there isn't as easy as you might think it is! She matures noticeably in the pages of the book.
Her gallant love Jasper, who starts out not being quite so gallant, has somewhat the opposite problem. He feels he knows/has does everything and is really just hanging about because it's expected of him. He learns that he's not quite as all knowing as he thinks he is.
It's a romance so of course there is a happy ending, but the twists and turns that take you there are definitely worth the read and the bevy of other characters are each richly presented and develop recognizable personalities despite some only showing up for a few pages here and there.

Definitely worth the read.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Awesome Regency Romance! 17. Oktober 2013

In the world of romance novels finding a well written refreshing author is a bit difficult. Having cut my reading teeth on Harlequin Romance, I have become a bit jaded in the romance novel department. I find it difficult to find a new story that isn't just the same tired plot and devises trotted out in new wrappings. I picked this story up not expecting much more really than a fun light read, and was pleasantly surprised to be sucked into the story and taken for a wild romping good time!
5.0 von 5 Sternen A Regency to Remember 24. Januar 2014

Reminiscent of Georgette Heyer's classic regency tales, Beneath the Mask offers us the pampered willful younger daughter of an impoverished earl with a rare passion for dance. When her father fires her dancing master, telling her it's time to grow up and become the lady she was bred to be, Daphne begins a life of subterfuge as the masked dancer.

She catches the eye of Jasper Pendleton, a man of money but no significant title, which his mother has decided he will gain by marriage. He has no desire to be shackled to a society flower, yet he can't help but think of the advantages, like getting his mother silenced while continuing his current lifestyle. Past mistresses aside, Jasper is determined to unveil the masked dancer and make her his own. She has other plans.

This tale has many twists and turns that ramp up the tension in believable ways. A regency romance to remember.
