5.0 von 5 Sternen Everything you want to know 31. Juli 2014
Von Alex S - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This beginner's guide has loads of information on both Kitchen Herbs (the first half) and raised bed gardening (the second half). As someone who hasn't had a lot of luck with growing my own herbs, I immediately turned to some of my favorites.

For many years I have tried to grow a "salsa garden." I have successfully grown tomatoes, onions, and jalapenos. However, I have never had my cilantro grow. Imagine my surprise to discover that I really should have been growing it in a shady area because the roots need to be kept cool! I also was stunned to discover that it can grow up to three feet tall!

I love chamomile tea, and was happy to see that the instructions for growing it was very clear.

I found it interesting that the author only mentioned growing mint in pots. If it is left to grow in the garden (or yard) it can spread rapidly and will come back year after year. But the pot instructions are "right on!"

Having done some raised bed gardening, I appreciated the thoroughness of the instructions and the author's understanding that one of the purposes of raised bed gardening is to keep the soil from being compacted so you always need to plan your garden so that you can reach every area without stepping into the garden. I also appreciated her practical advice on the direction of the garden and the order (planting shorter plants to taller plants to take advantage of sun).

There are many practical and helpful hints inside of the book.

I received a PDF version as a gift from the author. Even in the PDF version, the Table of Contents and other links all worked appropriately so I have no reason to believe that the Kindle Version would have problems, but could not check it.

Everything I would have wanted to know when I started raised bed gardening. Five Stars.

5.0 von 5 Sternen √ It is Difficult to Use Tractors in Raised Planting Beds 18. Juli 2014
Von Bassocantor - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Yes, it's true--no matter how well you build your raised planting bed, you're not gonna get a tractor in there! Well, the author admits that's a disadvantage, but the planters will be pretty small anyway, so would you really need a tractor? Think how silly you would look! What would your neighbors say if they saw you?

Aside from that limitation, and a few others, there are tons of advantages in building a raised planting bed, and Martha Green is here to tell you those advantages. Here's the main advantage of gardening: "There is something very special about getting your hands in the dirt for the purpose of creating or growing something beautiful." And that's the beauty of setting up raised planting beds. You get your hands in the dirt, and you do indeed create something beautiful.

► THINGS I LIKED ◄
♦ Good photos showing what to do. I bet those photos look even better on a color screen. (They're fine on my Kindle, but it is only monochrome.)
♦ Explanation of different materials to use for the frame
♦ Explanation of different soil materials. I had never heard of "coir," which is the outside of coconut shells.

► QUALITY OF EDITING ◄
♦ Well designed book, easy to read, simple writing style.
♦ There is a good Table of Contents and also an "Additional Resources" section at the back of the book. (Those extra resources look very familiar to me!)
♦ Minor nit: There appear to be a few minor formatting nits in the Kindle edition. (Extra spaces or paragraph marks.)

► ANY SPECIAL FEATURES? ◄
I liked the inclusion of "Disadvantages of Building a Raised Bed Garden." It's not all perfect--there are some things to watch for.

√ This is a concise, well-written guide to how to get started in raised bed gardening. I found this little book informative and fun to read. Recommend!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Helpful for the novice & experienced 4. August 2014
Von Chris Gregory - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This is a good guide for the beginner. As our author notes, additional research should be done in order to raise that perfect garden.

All aspects of container and raised bed gardening are covered here; containers, soil and amendments, mulch, composting, watering, sun exposure, insect control, fertilization, and tools - nothing is left out. Several types of herbs are introduced with method if growth and uses of each herb.

I've gardened for fifty years now, starting with an FFA project in 1963. And although this ebook is designed for beginners, I discovered some new and useful information and some new herbs. Since I am retired and my wife still works, I do most of the cooking and I can't wait to start growing and using anise, borage, chamomile, savory, and fennel.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A good guide to start with if you are considering starting a raised bed garden! 22. Juli 2014
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This beginner's book was well illustrated, easy to follow, and very informative. While the advanced gardener might think it too simplistic, a true beginner will find a wealth of information and good advice here. The book was easy to follow and arranged logically, covering selecting what to grow, how to build your raised bed (even offering the pros and cons of raised bed gardening), and problem solving. I enjoyed reading A Beginner's Guide to Patio and Raised Bed Gardening, and recommending for beginning gardeners.
