First published in 1969, this reissued collection of illustrated lyrics for 200 Beatles songs will be a treasure for any fan of the Fab Four. Editor and Beatle-buddy Alan Aldridge states in his introduction to the original edition: "What I have tried to do is present a book [that] is as entertaining to the eye and the imagination as a Beatles album is to the ear." Indeed, he more than succeeds, creating a lavish pageant of art and music that embraces not only the Beatles but also the psychedelic spirit of the entire era.
In 320 photos and illustrations, renowned artists offer their interpretations of various songs. "Help" is visualized by Ronald Searle; "Fixing a Hole," by Tomi Ungerer; "Glass Onion," by Peter Max; "I'm So Tired," by David Hockney; and "Oh, Darling," by Ralph Steadman. Aldridge also contributes his own trippy illustrations, which reflect the bold, bulbous, cartoons-on-acid style of 1960s poster art. This rich compilation also has brief quotes from the Beatles explaining the origins of the themes and lyrics of certain songs. For example, despite the buzz that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about LSD, according to Paul, "What happened was that John's son Julian did a drawing at school and brought it home, and he has a schoolmate named Lucy, and John said, 'What's that?' and he said 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds.'" Band members also share their thoughts on superstardom, including this now weighty comment from John: "I don't intend to be a performing flea anymore. I was the dreamweaver, but although I'll be around I don't intend to be running at 20,000 miles an hour trying to prove myself. I don't want to die at 40." It can't bring them back, but The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics can take you on a long and winding road of nostalgia. --Brangien Davis
Originally published in 1969 in two volumes, this collection is issued for the first time in hardback. For those unfamiliar with previous editions, the book is a compilation of 206 Beatles lyrics as illustrated both by fans and by internationally famous artists of the time such as David Bailey, David Hockney, and Ralph Steadman. Edited by designer Alan Aldridge, it also features quotes from the band, specially commissioned photographs, and many of the songs they wrote for other artists such as Cilla Black and PJ Proby. In interpreting the lyrics, the illustrators breathe new life into the words and flesh out basic love songs such as "Love Me Do" and "She Loves You" with their surreal and psychedelic images. Similarly, the more mature lyrics of later songs such as "Eleanor Rigby" and "Norwegian Wood", which are effective as words alone, also profit from visual enhancement. The diverse material on offer encompasses a broad spectrum of styles that range from the nursery rhyme-like "Yellow Submarine" through the hallucinogenic "Strawberry Fields Forever" and the abstract "I Am The Walrus" to the reflective beauty of "Across the Universe". As with poems, lyrics will always be open to interpretation and the Beatles songs have suffered more dissection than most. However, the illustrations not only successfully capture the essence of the songs but also provide a fascinating reflection of 1960s culture, perhaps most notably by the frequent use of sexist imagery. The Beatle s' enormous contribution to art, fashion, and music in the 1960s cannot be under- estimated, nor can their lasting impact on popular culture be disputed, making this definitive collection as relevant today as it was then. The lavish presentation with full colour illustrations ensures it is essential both for casual fans and for obsessive devotees who wish to deconstruct every word of every lyric. The Fab Four changed the world and this is a wonderful example of their colossal talent. From the Inside Flap
The Beatles have been a part of our lives for almost three decades. They were heroes and poets of the sixties and seventies, expressing the spirit of the times. With an influence that crossed social barriers - in addition boundaries of art, fashion and music - the Beatles lifted pop music to a new level of artistic achievement, culminating in the classic masterpiece, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics is the only major collection of illustrated Beatles lyrics available. Originally published in 1969, this book has become a symbol of an era, a must-have for Beatles fans and a brilliant tribute to the band that changed a generation. Quotes from John, Paul, George and Ringo provide candid, witty, insightful commentary on the songs and their origins. Clarification of controversial lyrics is offered by the only true authorities, the Beatles themselves. All the famous songs are included - from Can't Buy Me Love and A Hard Day's Night to Rocky Racoon, Revolver and Yellow Submarine. This text refers to the paperback edition of this title
About the Author
Alan Aldridge is an award-winning graphic designer and artist. A colleague and friend of the Beatles Illustrated Lyrics together in 1969. He asked notable contemporary artists to illustrate the lyrics in any way they liked and advertised for fan art from the public - this extraordinary collection is the result.
As a former Fulbright Scholar teaching high school English in Korea, I also used this book whenever I taught pop songs. I would copy a set of lyrics and illustrations and then distribute them to the class. The students loved it! It made the song lessons much more interesting.
