Kurzbeschreibung

To hold onto his love, he must release his beast.

Halle Shifters, Book 1

Once a Bear sets his mind on a mission, it’s best to stay out of his way. Alexander “Bunny” Bunsun is that Bear. Something’s not right with his cousin Chloe, and he’s come to Halle, PA, to sort it out, turn his Harley around and head home to Oregon. Until an enticing scent lures him into the local tattoo shop.

There she is. An inked, Southern-drawled she-Wolf with lime-green hair. His perfect mate.

Tabitha Garwood’s rotten day just got worse. Her Outcast status makes her a target for harassment with alarming regularity. And now, in the middle of a root touch-up, looking like a half-melted Skittle, she’s met her destined mate. The only upside? She finally has a protector in the form of a huge, tattooed, shaved-head Bear who vibrates with carefully restrained power.

When Chloe is left for dead and Tabby is threatened, only Alex can keep his growing family safe. Giving Tabby the loving home she needs, though, could come at a price—Alex must give up the control he’s worked a lifetime to attain.

Which means someone could die at the hands—and claws—of his beast.

Warning: This novel contains explicit sex, graphic language, a hunky Bear named Bunny and… Yes. I said a Bear named Bunny. I don’t know about you but I’m not brave enough to make fun of it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very Entertaining, Wonderful Characters 30. Juli 2010
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Dana Marie Bell is one of those authors who I either love her work or plain dislike it. I read the Halle Puma series and truly enjoyed all the books. The Halle Shifters series, beginning with Bear Necessities appears to be just as good. Ms. Bell has a talent for creating colorful and engaging characters that you can't help but care about. Her leading men are simply irresistible: sexy, strong, flawed but redeemable. Her leading ladies are strong willed and more than a match for their men. The plots are simple but very entertaining.

The story of Alex "Bunny" and Tabbie is a lot of fun. The characters' chemistry is obvious from the beginning. Being both shifters, they recognize their mates right away and do not fight the relationship. That in itself was very refreshing to me, since reading about fated pairs fighting the inevitable can get old, especially when one of the pair is simpy playing the martyr. Let's face it, if something is fated, it's going to happen, and fighting it will only make more problems in the long run. This is something that Bunny himself points out early in the story. Bunny is perhaps one of my favorite of her leading men. He is hilarious and lovable as only a bear can be. The scene when he first picks her up for a date and sees the condoms had me laughing so hard my husband asked me to read it to him. He ended up laughing too. You can read that scene is the excerpt found on the author's website. "Optimistic" indeed! The "action" in this story comes from the plot itself. There is danger for the characters and they have to rise above their own issues to survive. Of course they rely on each other to do so and that is very sweet to watch.

The secondary characters in the book are just as interesting as the leads, which makes me anxious to read their stories whenever they come out. I particularly liked the pairing of Cyn and Julian as well as Ryan and Glory. I am not too excited about the character of Chloe and her clueless human mate. She is just not that interesting, and the fact that she keeps getting in the way of other people's matings just gets on my nerves. The story also brings back many characters from the Halle Puma series, which was nice to see. Regardless, the series as a whole has tremenduous potential and is more than worth keeping an eye on.

This series is what I would consider light reading. The story moves fast and there are many erotic and sensual scenes, which while fun to read they take space from the storyline and take away some of the potential seriousness and depth of the plot. The bottom line: Bear Necessities is a very entertaining read with characters that stay with you. Perfect escapism when you want something light to read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Lots more meat in this one! 15. August 2010
Von AlexJouJou - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Bunny and Tabby are a great leading couple. They're funny, with a gritty realism that makes you think they could be any old young girl/boy you see at the Starbuck's counter. From the humorous nicknames (Bunny for a bear?) to the sweltering sex this novel has it all.

To start its much longer and more fleshed out than the Halle Puma series. I found it fascinating that the main couple in this one don't fight their mate bond at all. It is exactly what I would expect of shifters and, honestly, sometimes the old mating game gets old! It is refreshing instead of seeing the run, chase, catch model that Tabby and Bunny know right away they are it for each other. They spend their time getting to know one another and figuring out the various situations they find themselves in.

This novel seems to reflect the author is working on areas of weakness pointed out in reviews of her earlier work - the word building is better here, the back story and politices are more explained, the characters a little deeper. Two words: MORE MEAT. Pun intended.

The secondary characters are a blast! For me this is where the book earns its 5th star. Julian, Glory, and all the others. Even parents get into the mix here. By the end you are as invested in their stories as you are in Bunny/Tabby's. I'm hopeful each of the others is going to be a book in the series. There are some unanswered questions at the end of this one - clearly this is a series that will continue.

A warning: This one is more, shall we say, adventurous as far as sex goes. Not for the faint of heart.

And the cover model - Ooo-La-La. 'Nuff said.
Don't miss this fun sexy shifter romp!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Ohh.My.Gah! 14. Februar 2011

I'm not even sure how to start off this review so I'm just going to break it down from what I liked to what I didn't.

The good:

The sex, holy crap, the sex! It was amazing. Now I am not typically one to enjoy books with graphic sex scenes, and no it is not because I am a prude or it makes me uncomfortable, I just tend to think the author gets it wrong. Either it is too animalistic and lacks emotion or it is anticlimactic (no pun intended) and lacks passion. The author here however manages to capture both. Its hot with out seeing technical, so bravo to her there.

The characters are very entertaining (a werebear named Bunny, as has been pointed out numerous times, is hysterical) for the most part I would say they are well developed. Bunny is protective and possessive with out being in your face obnoxious about it. Tabby is cute and vibrate and surprisingly relatable. The whole mating thing is gone about differently than most stories I've read containing the same premise. Neither of them fight it or object, in fact they seem to click almost immediately. You could imagine them getting together even with out it, but don't get me wrong, I love the whole mate thing and it is a nice touch.

The bad:

The plot, or lack there of. I just wasn't feeling the story at all, if it wasn't for the amazing sex scenes (uhum, sorry but its true) I doubt I would have finished this. I just didn't care enough about the outcome of the "mystery". And the scenes where Bunny and Tabby aren't in the bedroom dragged for me. I would have liked a little more action (not that kind of action, gutter minds!) or even a little more information on the side characters (Tabby's best friend and Bunny's cousin for example)

The writing, okay I am not normally a stickler for amazing grammar or punctuation (I'm so bad at it myself I normally don't even notice) as long as the story is good but seriously, this thing read like a (albeit very good) fanfiction. The writing was choppy, the pacing and flow of the story was inconsistent. I just felt it could have been a lot better with a good editor or perhaps another read through.

Overall it was a very enjoyable read, if you're looking for some spicy fun to pass the time I highly recommend.

Disclaimer: I feel the need to add this since I normally review YA novels, but in case this wasn't clear from the actual review, this is an adult novel and is not appropriate for younger readers.

This book was so good, I picked it up to read from my TBR list and never put it down.

The characters were well thought out and the author gave me enough information and reading time to get to know the protagonist in the story before the hot love scenes.
I detest books that before I get off the first page the two main characters see each other and immediately their clothes fall off and they are making mad monkey love. I like to get a feel for the characters before it gets to this point.

Having said that the loves scenes are hot, the action interesting and the book full of humor.

If you like Shelley Laurenston you will like this.

I laughed, I gasped, I cheered and I had an absolute blast reading Bear Necessities. In fact, I wanted to finish this story so badly, I was late bringing my child to trumpet lessons and I was late getting into work all because I couldn't stop reading.

It's not too often that I find a book that hits all the right happy buttons with characters whose personalities, sense of humor, comic timing and even their problems totally have me hooked and invested in their wellbeing. Even at its most dire, when the suspense and drama and action all come together for an amazing pivotal moment in battle, there was humor and a sense that these people are real. By that I mean the author created well defined, relatable and believable personalities for all the people that I met in this story. The dialogue interplay between the hero and heroine and the secondary characters never hit a wrong note and in fact enhanced my enjoyment of the book. There were so many clever quips and little jabs at each other a reader could feel the closeness, the respect and the care they all have for one another. The friendships, the family connections, the love, it's all there for a reader to enjoy.

I don't want to come across as all gushy but I completely and totally adored Bunny and Tabby. I am not even sure where to start. Bunny a/k/a Alex is a werebear and a character I just wanted to hug. I enjoyed the depiction of a big, tough manly man doing yoga. And I got hot and bothered with Tabby's interpretation of how fun Yoga could be. I respected Tabby because of her history, her pride, and her commitment to her friends. But what I really liked was her very open and accepting nature regarding Bunny. She left all that relationship confusion and angst to her two best friends. That situation between Cyn and Julian is another story and one that a reader gets a thorough background in during this book. I loved it and can't wait for their tale to be told. As it is, Tabby is very enthusiastic about being claimed by her big bad Bunny but she doesn't know everything there is to know about him. I had a rollicking good time reading the scene when she finds out that Bunny/Alex is not quite as helpless as she thought.

Even the secondary characters have their chance in the limelight. I get a feeling that there is a backlist I'm going to have to dive into because Max, Emma and Gabe were awesome. If this is a series, then this is my first venture into it and I can say that this book completely stands alone on solid ground. One thing it did do was whet my appetite for more by Ms. Bell. Her style of voice, character development and sense of humor as well as the kind of world building she's done in Bear Necessities has wowed me. I want to know about everyone because the author did such a wonderful job in making them come alive.

The conflict is mostly external but it does have an effect on Tabby's internal conflict. One feeds the other. I felt sad for Tabby until Bunny stepped in. Then I felt anticipation for what was to come as soon as Bunny came on the scene. No way was a big, growly hunk of a man going to stand down and let his lady try to defend herself. Even if she is a wolf.

Bear Necessities is necessary reading for paranormal romance readers who enjoy tales with a sense of humor, a healthy dose of steamy, and even fun, loving and a plot a reader can really sink their teeth into. Did I say teeth? That's another thing. I look for sensual bite scenes in my paranormal romances and this book has them. They are hot, hot, HOT and I am a very satisfied reader. I could go on because there are so many delightful twists and turns, revelations and unique characters in this book, I can only recommend this story in the strongest way I know how by giving it the best rating I am able. Otherwise I run the risk of spouting spoilers because there is so much more to share and be enthusiastic about and I want to shout out to the rooftops. I LOVED this book!
