Stuart O'Grady is an inspirational but very human sports hero, and Battle Scars is an enthralling read for anyone interested in elite sport.

In 2007, when Stuart O’Grady abandoned Stage 8 of the Tour de France after crashing on a descent and fracturing eight ribs, a shoulder blade, collarbone, three vertebrae (not to mention puncturing his right lung), cycling seemed over for Stuey. But ‘Mr Indestructible’ – who had become the first Australian to win the Rock of Roubaix earlier that year – got back on his bike.

By 2013 Stuart O’Grady had competed in 17 Tours; secured Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals; been named Australian Cyclist of the Year, and Australian Male Road Cyclist of the Year; won the inaugural Tour Down Under; and earned an Order of Australia Medal in recognition of his contribution to the sport. But then came the worst time of his life, when he announced his retirement after such an impressive cycling career and revealed that he had used the performance enhancing drug EPO before the 1998 Tour de France – a Tour marred by widespread doping.

In this up-front and honest autobiography Stuey reveals all. This is his story: as candid and down-to-earth as the man himself.

A good and funny book. Even more than the rider the person emerges and O' Grady seems to be someone who instinctively lives by the law of karma. And cycling of course invites this way of life. Everybody who has such a full, rich and good life is indeed be a happy person.

Being from Adelaide Stuey has been a local legend, and still is I was ecstatic when he won Paris Roubaix and gutted when he admitted to EPO. The book is easy to read and flows well. For all who dream of being a Pro cyclist, the book describes the reality of the hard work and sacrifice to get there and stay there ,not to mention the hazards involved. You also get an appreciation of the physical gifts a high class endurance athlete has been blessed with . When combined with determination, grit and in the case of a cyclist, the ability to endure suffering , you can appreciate why only a rare few can make it as he has ,to the top of this sport. Each person will have theIr view on his reasons for doping, keeping it secret then admitting at the end of his career. His narrative comes across as open, honest and not seeking forgiveness which is to his credit . For those keen on cycling I recommend this book.

I did not like so much how the book was written. The glowing appreciative sections from individuals interviewed was a bit much, what did you expect them to say. There was a bit of grandstanding from them as well which took away from the life and times of Stuart. I guess the events were summarily discussed but not in any great detail. I guess I wanted more detail of the intricacies and background of what is was like for Stuart to forge his way ahead in Europe, but I guess this is not the direction of the book Sutart wanted to go in.

Enlightening read about someone growing up in same city as myself. I'm sure he regrets many of his actions, but clearly worked hard to achieve what he did in the sport. Clearly he and his family made a lot of sacrifices along the way of becoming and stating a professional cyclist, and I will be intrigued to see what happens following his retirement. Enjoyed reading it more than I thought I would.

Worth reading if you love cycling but large chunks of time go undocumented and I was hoping for more coverage of the people he competed with over the years. There was a lot of angst over his doping and I wonder if he would have confessed if he realised his name was not on the definitive list. He came across as a decent man who got to experience a golden dopey era in cycling.

Loved the book, am relatively new to all things pro-cycling as a sport and was fascinated by the stories and what Stuart achieved...I could not put the book down once I started. I have read just about all the most recent pro-cycling autobiographies in the last 12 months and this one is in my top 3 of most interesting...
