3.0 von 5 Sternen Autobiography Of A Serial Killer by Travis D. Bickel is hands down the goriest and most disturbing book I have ever read... for 23. März 2016
Von John Kubec - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Autobiography follows the life and crimes of Leif Damstroft, a demented blood-thirsty murder-rapist who loves to torture his victims. This brief, blood soaked story is told in first person, the killers own words, as he recounts his many murders. Although very little is revealed about his history and backstory other than his obsession with his neighbor Vanessa, who becomes his first in both meanings of the worth, the focus of the story really isn't on Leif himself as a character study but more on his dastardly deeds. We know he is mentally disturbed and is plagued by an intense depression that only subsides when he kills, the only thing that makes him feel alive. The narration skips the potatoes and goes right for the meat; murder. This is both good and bad. Its bad in the sense that you never get a full feel for Leif. He's essentially a faceless killer with little to no backstory. But at the same time most of the people who enjoy reading this kind of stuff generally wades through pages of dull crime investigation and victim backstories to get the action. In that sense Autobiography is pure, unrelenting action.

That is where Autobiography shines.

The descriptions of gore and murder are detailed and highly creative. One scene involving a pipe and barbed wire still haunts me to think about it. The scenes read like a shooting script for a snuff film or a gory death metal bands lyrics sheets. Its hard to read but harder to put down because you keep asking yourself 'can it get worse?' And it does. It always does.

While I would have liked a little more scene description its understandable that, narrated in first person, that a killer probably wouldn't bother describing his environment and mood. Instead it feels authentic, like a real person telling you this stuff. Its also obvious that the writer researched a lot of serial killers and put in echoes, or nods, in the story, from Bundy's description of 'tension,' to BTK's 'projects,' and Jeffery Dahmer's love of power drills. The escalation of the killer from stalker to animal abuser to rapist to murderer to torturer also feels natural, as does the crimson-haze-like manic-depressive mood of Leif as he swings from depressed to psychotic and back between kills.

In summery, this story is dark and gory and not for the weak of heart. If you feel like a walk on the dark side or you like graphic depictions of murder, this story is for you. Or, perhaps, you just want to challenge yourself and see if you can handle being in the killers shoes for a few hours. Most, I suspect, cannot.

Also, as the author may have noted, I think the person who gave the one-star review did not read the book. Not enough gore? Are you kidding me? Any more gore and this book would be illegal to print.
2.0 von 5 Sternen Deeply disturbed 23. Juni 2016

Autobiography of a Serial Killer was really disturbing. I was warned about that (I mean, the book clearly says "Dark and Disturbing" on the front and has a warning on the back). So yeah, I knew what I was getting into before I started reading the book.
That being said, the book still surprised me with its crudeness. It kind of made me want to go throw up. It really offered a true unfiltered look into the mind of someone deeply disturbed and twisted.
One thing I'll say about Autobiography of a Serial Killer is that it is a truly honest account of what went on inside the mind of Leif Damstroft. So if you want to understand what motivates such twisted minds as his, this book definitely will help you do that.
I advise against reading this book unless you have a very strong stomach and don't scare easily.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting look into the mind of evil. 24. Juli 2017

Sad but interesting look into the thinking and logic of a evil man. Do not read if you are faint of heart because the crimes and pure evil that comes off these pages will or can change you.
