Kurzbeschreibung

Accepted writing style conventions change very slowly, but they do change. That is all the more reason why this favorite reference book for students, writers, and educators requires periodic updating. In this new edition, the authors review the fundamentals of correct sentence structure, then present twenty basic sentence patterns that encompass virtually every effective way of writing simple, compound, and complex sentences. They give advice on ways to vary rhythm and sentence patterns to produce a more interesting writing style. Example sentences as well as brief essays by recognized writers are presented and analyzed. This brand-new edition, updated with many contemporary examples of fine writing style, will inspire both students and seasoned writers to make their own essays sing.

As an English teacher, I have not found a better book for teaching students of English a better way to write and sound like a native speaker. It helped improve my writing; it can help yours, too.
If you want to learn how to write on a higher level, then this is the book. Clear examples, excellent explanations, focused exercises.
The vocabulary necessary for this book is not for beginners, however. A good, mid-level student of the English language should be able to find this of use.
It's worth the money.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Theory meets practice. 4. Januar 2007
Von Humberto A. Mancuso Jr. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Chapter one covers sentence parts briefly and is useful for anyone who needs a brief grammar refresher. Then the authors explore twenty sentence patterns, including several variations. What I liked most in this book is that after each pattern you will find explanations, examples (including professional samples) and exercises. Pattern layout is simple but effective and will allow you to write almost any sentence in English. All you need to do is to apply these styling patterns to your own sentences.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Kindle version needs a better TOC! 31. Juli 2011
Von R. HIll - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I have the print version and use it as an exercise tool for creating poetic structures based on different sentence patterns. I decided it would be useful to have the Kindle version as a ready reference. Big mistake. The TOC does not list the patterns beyond number 3~navigation is such a headache. Also the graphics are pale gray and difficult to read. This is an example of a shoddy Kindle conversion.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Wonderful little book that changed the way I wrote 5. Januar 2011
Von Y. Lu - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I am not a native speaker but I have learned enough English that I eventually made it to two of the top universities in the United States. And although I am not a master of writing, I have often been told by my professors that I write very clearly. And if I must think of a book that fundamentally changed the way I write, it is this little book that I read about ten years ago. This little gem presents several patterns of writing that one does not come across often enough, yet they are from time to time extremely useful and even powerful. And the patterns I learned from this book have certainly helped with my college application essays. With such a low price tag, I would recommend it to any of my friends who want to improve their writing.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great tips on styling sentences. 11. Juli 2008
Von Happy-go-lucky - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
A great book on sentence variety. Examples of stunning sentences. Not a book to be overlooked. A must-have for any aspiring writer or student.
This book is the one I most consult on sentence variety. From much use, mine has gone dog-eared and well-thumbed.

If you love this book, then you will really love the other books, those of the below:

The first three MUST-SEE books by by Don Killgallon.
1. "Sentence Composing for High School: A Worktext on Sentence Variety and Maturity."
2. "Sentence Composing for College: A Worktext on Sentence Variety and Maturity"
3. "Grammar for High School: A Sentence-Composing Approach"

All these first three books above are the must-haves for all aspiring writers and students. They all teach sentence variety and has examples of stunning sentences.

Also, get this book below.

4. "Sentence Combining: A Composing Book" by William Strong.

A lovely, charming book with lively examples of sentences. Great exercises for brainstorming - sentence-composing helps combat any Writer's Block as it did for me. I often bring this lightweight book with me into cafes. Great readings with my teas and lattes.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Spruce up your writing 27. Mai 2010
Von Jason Ryan - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Varying your sentence styles can make flat writing come alive. It's easy to fall into the rut of subject, verb, subject, verb. Flipping these things around, adding descriptors; it all makes for more interesting prose. This is a real nuts-and-bolts book with lots of exercises to improve your writing. But I took away a good appreciation for the need to vary style as I write. Many people will likely read this book as part of a writing class. But I picked it up simply looking for ways to improve my prose style.
