Kurzbeschreibung

In the year 2007 an accident at a clandestine U.S. government facility in rural West Virginia releases several test subjects infected with a necrotic virus. Within weeks the U.S. military and the Department of Homeland Security are forced to declare the bulk of the state under quarantine. Defensive lines are fortified and nothing is allowed in or out, damning those missed in the short period of evacuations to a living hell and locking away the real truth of the virus’ creation. The government transfers the responsibility of maintaining the quarantine from the military to the Department of Homeland Security, which christens it “Area

Eric R. Lowther is a semi-amateur author that makes his home in eastern Ohio with his writer/editor wife, Anna M. Lowther, daughter they're-coming-to-get-you Barbara, a tiny dog with a huge under-bite and a cat that is single-pawedly saving the world from the threat of the Lepus. Some of his previously published works can be seen in Theaker's Quarterly, Night to Dawn magazine, Dark Distortions I anthology, A Library of Unknown Horrors, Bump in the Night anthology from Drollerie Press and many more. His work can also be found on-line in Necrotic Tissue, Edge of Propinquity and Blood, and Blade & Thruster. He hopes either this writing thing pays off or the zombie apocalypse occurs so that his life's knowledge won't go to waste.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Definitely worth it! 28. August 2011

I'll admit that I was unsure of purchasing this book. I'm a full-time college student and every dollar counts for me. I had the sample sent to my Kindle and enjoyed it enough to give it a shot. Mr. Lowther's story is very good. It is a different twist on the entire zombie uprising type of thing. It is a long book (which made me very happy) that is realistic in the facts of politics within the US government. I could easily believe that this is how things would happen if our nation was faced with this type of incident. His development of the characters was perfect and it was easy to connect with them. I have the highest praise for the work that he did on Area 187 and I will be purchasing more of his books when he publishes them. (So get to work!)

Now, that said, I do need to address the fact that the publisher on this book completely dropped the ball. I was extremely disappointed in the editing that was done on this book. I am the type of reader that becomes completely engrossed in a book when it is this good. I read much of this while my home was being pounded by a hurricane. But, when there are glaring mistakes made that even the most inexperienced of editors should have easily caught, it pulls me right out of the story and completely disorients me.

My suggestion? Dear Publisher: find another COMPETENT editor for Mr. Lowther's books. His writing deserves that and those of us that purchase the book also deserve it. Don't be the fly in the ointment for a very talented author.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Classic of American Zombie Literature 19. Dezember 2015

This book was phenomenal - it's like Tom Clancy crossed with George Romero and some Peter Merideth mixed in for good measure. The intrigue, action, horror, and gore are some of the very best. I loved the characters and the dynamic development. Tromping through Zombified Appalachia is going to change a person for all time, no doubt about it. [Insert banjo riff from Deliverence here.] The plot keeps you glued to the novel for its entire (full!) length. This isn't a skimpy serial so that is saying a lot.

The one element that detracted from the book for me was the writing about firearms. I have a hard time when a revolver is fitted with a silencer in film or in a novel... Once that happens so much credibility is lost. It's just such a basic thing. One minute of conversation with the guy manning the counter at your local gun store would be all the research needed. Some of the descriptions of other silenced weapons were also a bit preposterous - silencer is not an accurate term. A rifle fitted with a suppressor is relatively quiet. The key word is relatively - as in a very loud noise is quiet relative to a very, very, very loud noise.

But it's a novel about zombies so I imagined that there had been some future innovations in design of weapons, suppressors, and ammunition, and got on with enjoying the hell out of the story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic Zombie Novel - The Best I ever read! 21. Mai 2012
Von JPott - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
This was by far the best zombie book I have ever purchased through my Amazon account. Why? Well let me explain how I came to this ranking. I have purchased a moderate amount of books in this genre on my kindle device (25-30). At first the opportunity to purchase a novel for $0.99 - $4.99 on my smart phone was a thrill - no more limited selections in airports. plus you could download a preview or view reviews from others prior to buying - what a revelation! Then, I quickly learned the "let-the-buyer-beware" principle on the Amazon store. Namely, that most of the so-called 'novels' are really just what I would consider short stories that read so quickly you finish them in a day or so. Plus they usually have unbeleiveable plots, make unrealistic story-line assumptions to fit the authors narrative, or go way overboard about gory zombie killings, oozing brain material, blah, blah, blah. Then, worst of all, they end with a shameless unfinished ending that demands you by the sequel. So by the time you've read the entire series, you've purchased 3-4, 5, 6 or more of each $4.99 novel. Nice way to make money on the internet I'd say.

Anyway, this novel was extremely well written from a logical plot formulation and execution. Great, realistic storyline and thought-provoking mini-plots throughout. Had a great ending that was summerized by two different character epilogues that really finalized the book and let you put it down satified everything was wrapped up and resolved. Plus, made it easy to create a sequel. Finally it was over 600+ book pages long - just around my minimum length to allow good character and realistic plot development.

I definitely plan to read other novels from this author as his work sells itself. You will NOT be dis-appointed in this book, unless you are one of the reviewers who complains that the novel was too long and too hard to follow...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Non-stop thrill ride 21. Oktober 2012

Of late I have been reading primarily zombie fiction. I really need to get a life but first let me say this: This is one of the best zombie books I have EVER read. When my Kindle told me I was closing in on 75% read, I slowed down so I could savor the rest of the book - the first 75% went very quickly - too quickly. Truth be told, as bad as the zombies are (they're the slow variety), they must take a back seat to the pure evil evinced by several of the antagonists. I am reminded of Sartre's famous dictum: "Hell is other people." I think the author realizes this and the zombies take a back seat to the people who are hiding some terrible secrets about area 187. To make matters worse, some of the still-human denizens of area 187 have degenerated into characters even worse than the zombies - truly perverted and twisted people.
It seems a government experiment with a dangerous bacterium takes a bad turn and people are infected only to rise again - with a fierce and mindless desire to nosh on other people - the living kind. The story begins several years after the event - a large area, including most of West Virginia, is fenced off and vigorously patrolled to keep the zombies in and curious people out. The barrier is, however, porous enough to allow adventurers and profiteers access to zombie land - where they pursue missions of mercy - or greed - depending on their motives. One of these is a pure-hearted - but extremely angry and violent John Heath. Heath has tried for years to find his wife - without success. He eventually gives up and returns to the "world" outside of area 187. An aggressive and curious television reporter tries to get Heath to join her in a forbidden mission into area 187. Then the shit storm begins. The story is incredibly well-told. The characters are believable and so well developed, I'd recognize them if they knocked on my door. The story takes so many twists and turns that my adrenaline levels spiked on several occasions. Eric Lowther has knocked this one out of the park - and managed to tear the cover off the ball at the same time. I will be waiting - anxiously - for his next effort. If he's not working on another book, I'm going to kidnap him and take HIM into area 187! If this review works for you, make a note: Another writer, DJ Molles, is similarly gifted in this narrow genre. If you enjoyed "Area 187" as much as I did, you will love Molles' books: "The Remaining" and "The Remaining: Aftermath."

A great story set in the desolate wasteland of Area 187 inhabited by zombies, fortune hunters, and survivors that were left behind in the chaos when the buffer zone was set up and the infection contained... effectively quarantining the outbreak.
The government denies the existance of any remaining survivors - abandoning them to their fate and condemning them to forever fight to survive admidst the wreckage - until one man comes along that can change it all.

I normally prefer books that are in a series because I read so fast the story is over way too soon when contained in a single book but, I'm glad I made an exception in this case.
Excellent story that sticks with you...I didn't want it to end!
