Kurzbeschreibung

A murder mystery that keeps you guessing until the end...

When Control of the Vatican Is At Stake, Money Talks and Nobody Plays Fair

The brutal murder of a young Jesuit priest and church financier thrusts investigator Michael Visconte into a web of Vatican conspiracy and intrigue -- with deadly consequences.

Visconte discovers the crime is tied to his personal complicated past and to his ongoing investigation into the money laundering operations of the Archangeli, a secret society inside the Vatican.

His lucky break--one that should provide critical evidence--blurs the line between good and evil and not only endangers the lives of Michael and the Jesuits, but also imperils the lives of his wife and children.

Tavakoli weaves a rousing tale of murder, embezzlement, blackmail, conspiracies, psychological manipulation, and ultimate power.

Praise for Archangels: Rise of the Jesuits

"Conspiracies within conspiracies. A fast-paced thriller."
--Publisher's Weekly

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good book! 4. Februar 2013
Von Krysi Joseph aka boekverslaafde - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

When I read about Archangels, I thought it would be along the lines of Dan Brown's DaVinci Code. But once I started reading it, I found that it wasn't, really, like it at all. Both stories talk about the Vatican, and there is murder involved. That's where the similarities end.
Which, to me, is really a good thing. Janet Tavakoli stated at the beginning of the book that while some places, people, and business/corporations are real, they are used fictitiously in the book, except where documented historical events are referenced. I believe she has put more fact in there than what I originally thought when reading.
Janet is very thorough when describing history, and the Society of Jesus. While some of the descriptions may not be REAL, she made sure we have all the facts and can understand what is going on. Archangels was well written and thought out, and I enjoyed reading it.

Why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5:

1) There were a couple times where I found it hard to get through, it seemed too slow moving for me.

2) I thought it could have used another murder or two, in my opinion the bloodier it is, the better it is to read.

3) While she was great at describing everything else, Janet really didn't go into much detail of the main character, and his family. I feel she should have gone more in depth with them, as I didn't really feel connected to any of them. I didn't feel like I knew them, or care about them, really.

One of the things that I truly loved about the book:

I am usually able to pick up on the foreshadowing and once I meet all the characters, I'm pretty good about figuring out how the book is going to end, who was the murderer/culprit/etc. While reading Archangels, I thought I had it figured out...then with 33 pages left in the book, I thought I'd discovered I was right. ... then a few pages after that, I found I was incredibly WRONG. I love it when books have a twist from the direction I was thinking!

Besides those 3 things, I found this book enjoyable to read and look forward to reading any other fictional books Janet may release. As for the physical book itself, I received a trade paperback (they're taller and usually thinner than the standard mass market paperback). The book was well bound, and the paper was a lot thicker than you usually see in paperbacks. Nice and heavy duty paper, harder to rip, and will hold up better over the years.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Well written and intriguing 23. Mai 2017

I really like the book. The author obviously knows her financial information and manages it very well, although there were times I was a bit overwhelmed by the list of people involved.

I really liked the characters particularly the main character Michael and his wife. They were very well drawn and well developed. The entire story is a good premise. I've seen reviews that said it was like Dan Brown's book. Da Vincey Code but I read that book and I don't think there's a whole lot of comparison other than they both involved a conspiracy within the Catholic Church. This story is fiction based on facts and that makes it much more interesting. I had no idea that the Catholic Church was so involved in finances but I probably should've. After reading this it makes one wonder what else they're up to .

5.0 von 5 Sternen The facts to this work of fiction are right on target, sadly. 29. Januar 2013

For the sake of transparency here, I am a Roman Catholic. I was brought up in the Latin Mass era, so I remember much of the facts the author has based her story on. Her facts are so true that it is depressing. A priest takes the vows of Poverty; Chastity, and Obedience, and then came the 60's and onward to present day. Is it any wonder we no longer hear 'fire and brimstone' sermons in our churches? No wonder to me at least.

This is an excellent story which has taken actual facts and mixed them ever so well with fiction to make a great story. The characters are believable. The story and plot are well written and follow the timeline of the real events well. The main character, Michael, is one you can actually put yourself into his shoes if you are as angry as I am as to what has happened to the Church.

I applaud the author and looking forward to the next 2 books in this series.

I really liked this book. I loved the intrigue and mystery surrounding the Vatican and who is doing what. I found it interesting because it is based on fact, so it's kind of an inside view of what goes on.

All the more interesting now with a new pope...who is a JESUIT!

I highly recommend this book. Good story, interesting characters and all.

Thanks!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating Insider Mystery 1. April 2013

Archangels: Rise of the Jesuits by Janet Tavakoli is a fast paced mystery set in and around the modern Catholic Church, firmly based in history from World War II forward to today's headlines. The author is a well-respected student of and author about modern finance. Warren Buffet is an admirer and she is an outspoken critic of the 2008 TARP program. That made me her fan before I "cracked" the first page.

This, her first novel, is about moral decay in the Catholic Church, much of which revolves around complicated financial dealings, which Ms. Tavakoli writes about in a way that helps the reader follow the convoluted process of hiding who has the money (billions of dollars), where it came from and how it was done. A massive shell game of clerics, gangsters, foreign individuals, cartels and banks.

However, it is the the personal story of Michael Visconti and his wife and two sons that pulls the reader into the ride and makes you care. Michael is the head of an elite law enforcement group nicknamed The Specialists, combining the functions of our FBI and CIA. Michael's involvement in the investigation puts his marriage and everyone he loves in danger.

Not all the clergy are bad guys. There are good guys and heroes among them; however, even they display a superiority and arrogance that contains the inherent dangers we see within the Church and how it operates today.

There is an afterward that puts all the historical data into order. I would read it first, if I had it to do again. The plotting is dense, although very fast moving. This is one book I will enjoy reading again to get what I missed the first time.
