"I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

So begin the trials and tribulations of the irascible Alexander, who has been earning the sympathy of readers since 1972. People of all ages have terrible, horrible days, and Alexander offers us the cranky commiseration we crave as well as a reminder that things may not be all that bad. As Alexander's day progresses, he faces a barrage of bummers worthy of a country- western song: getting smushed in the middle seat of the car, a dessertless lunch sack, a cavity at the dentist's office, stripeless sneakers, witnessing kissing on television, and being forced to sleep in railroad-train pajamas. He resolves several times to move to Australia.

Judith Viorst flawlessly and humorously captures a child's testy temperament, rendering Alexander sympathetic rather than whiny. Our hero's gum-styled hair and peevish countenance are artfully depicted by Ray Cruz's illustrations. An ALA Notable Book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a great antidote to bad days everywhere, sure to put a smile on even the crabbiest of faces. (Ages 5 to 9) -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe.

Though I wouldn't necessarily admit this to anyone over about 3 feet tall, I must say this is my all time favorite book bar none. I read it as a child and found myself instantly relating to Alexander and distinctly remember feeling pleased that someone...anyone...else had the capacity to blow a day full of minor irratations out of proportion so dramatically. Now, as a preschool teacher I love it yet more because not only do the children have terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days, but when they do, so too do I. I find myself reading the book out loud with so much drama and emphasis that it is emensely cathartic for all of us! I adore this book and firmly believe that every human on the planet would benefit from dramatic readings of it from time to time.

I bought and read this book looooong before I had any children. When I first read the book I thought that it was a cute story with many quotable lines. It wasn't until recently though, now that my children are ages 1-9 that I realized that this is probably NOT fiction, but a true-to-life account of life with children.
The string of events, from waking up to gum in his hair to everything else that happens is funny. Why is it funny? Because it's all too TRUE!
Great story, great illustrations. Viorst at the top of her form!
A definite keeper -- 5+ stars!

I am a teacher and I read this book to my 5th and 6th grade classes each year when I have had a horrible day myself. We all get a very good laugh because we ALL have days like Alexander, from getting squished in the car, to "accidently" calling Australia (his dad prefers that they don't pick him up at the office anymore). Each kid gets a big kick from Alexander's comment that there is "kissing on television, and I hate kissing." We even make our own very bad day books when necessary. This is a must read for teachers and parents of kids of any age!

Dieses Buch ist gut geeignet für Englisch-Anfänger, da es in kleinen Abschnitten eine Geschichte erzählt.
Die Texte sind gut zu übersetzen und daher eine schöne Übung.

This book was recently read to my kindergarten sunday school class. While I was listening along with the children, I just had to crack a smile. I've had plenty of days just like Alexander. As a college student, days like this are normal occurances, but it wasn't until I read this book that I realized how much I can blow things out of perspective. Just like in the story, my bad days often begin with my bad attitude while getting out of bed. I truly believe that this book is absolutely essential for everyone to read. If you're not having a bad day, then great...but if you are, it'll definitely put a smile on your face and help put things back in proportion. Just a reminder that good advice for everyone can come from anywhere, even a children's story book.

_Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Day_ is a truly wonderful book for children. I remember vividly my mother reading me Alexander's story when I was a child, and the mere mention of the book still sends me into frenzies of adulation, even though I am in my twenties, in grad school, and paid to read "adult" books (none of which top Alexander). The story is simple--Alexander's day is not very good--but it is one that children can understand and extend into their own experiences. Such books are great for kids because it helps them to look beyond themselves, to recognize that other people have experiences like theirs, which is what good stories usually do. And this story is a great one!

I read this years ago, because the title just fractured me. I always have a copy nearby, to soothe my jangled nerves when I've had a terrible, horrible, etc. etc. etc. (Adults definitely have these days, too, you know!)
I volunteer to help first graders read at a school nearby and they love to have this book read to them. It cheers them up to know they're not alone, and whenever we're feeling grumpy, we just have to say "I'm having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day," and a smile, even a tiny one, starts to appear.
Thank you Judith, for this book. I'll treasure and share it always.
