For those of you who aren't tekkies, there are basically 2 interfaces for laptop drives: IDE and SATA.IDE drives have two rows of pins, and SATA has a modular connector. IDE pins on a laptop drive are not the same as the IDE pins on a desktop drive, but the SATA connections are the same on both. IDE has not been used in laptops for several years, and they have pretty much stopped making IDE laptop drives. So if you want to keep your old laptop, you pretty much have to convert it to SATA SSD.

I used this converter with a Crucial M500 240GB mSATA SSD to convert a laptop from IDE spinning disk to SATA SSD.

The great thing about this converter is that it fits perfectly where a regular IDE laptop drive will fit and the holes match up. So you can take out your IDE drive and put this into whatever bracket your laptop came with and it should work fine.

Of course, it is preferable to have a regular SSD drive, but if you are trying to get a few more years out of your laptop that has an IDE connection, then this is a good way to do it.

You have two basic choices to get your stuff from your old drive to the new. You will either need to image your old drive to an external hard drive, install the SSD, and restore the image. Or you can backup your data, reinstall your operating system and programs, and restore your data.

I looked a long time for a solution of this type, and this device fits the purpose perfectly.

A much better option than going with the few questionable brand name IDE solid state drives out there if you are trying to update a machine that does not support SATA...

This was used to update an old P4 laptop. It passes the TRIM command to the mSATA drive, which helps keep performance up. It was 100% compatible with the laptop. It was 3x faster than the old laptop drive. The laptop is now useable again.

I purchased this along with a Plextor PX-256M6M 256GB MSATA from Newegg to upgrade my Acer Ferrari 4000 laptop, which originally had a PATA hard drive. I installed Windows 7, and everything works perfectly. Bootup is very fast as well as applications running very fast. I am very pleased.

Worked on a 13 year old Toshiba Portege 3505. Was able to clone my ancient, original hard drive into a new mSATA drive, which then booted in my old laptop using this adapter, no problems at all. Great way to revive an old junker laptop for my four year old to play around on---it runs better than ever now.
