Like the one-time bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, The Alchemist presents a simple fable, based on simple truths and places it in a highly unique situation. And though we may sniff a bestselling formula, it is certainly not a new one: even the ancient tribal storytellers knew that this is the most successful method of entertaining an audience while slipping in a lesson or two. Brazilian storyteller Paulo Coehlo introduces Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream.

Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers, who come in unassuming forms such as a camel driver and a well-read Englishman. In one of the Englishman's books, Santiago first learns about the alchemists--men who believed that if a metal were heated for many years, it would free itself of all its individual properties, and what was left would be the "Soul of the World." Of course he does eventually meet an alchemist, and the ensuing student-teacher relationship clarifies much of the boy's misguided agenda, while also emboldening him to stay true to his dreams. "My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy confides to the alchemist one night as they look up at a moonless night.

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself," the alchemist replies. "And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity."

So amazon delivery and all was fine. But the book itself is really bad.
It's a rip off of religious books. I found it annoying to have the book tell me a story and at each and every point give me the conclusion (moral of the story) too. It is as if you can't think for yourself. It's all like that. I rather have the opportunity to have my own opinion about things.
I was fooled by the book's good fame, but then a lot of people like Justin Bieber and that doesn't make him any good!
Also women in the point of view of this book are like goods, objects one would own. And all women are meant for in this book is for being married to men.

This book was hard to follow for me. Perhaps because his quest was typically male (boyish) and as a woman I found it hard to imagine that young men are that two-dimensional. To think that fullfillment of a dream must be a journey taken alone... Santiago makes nothing happen on his journey. In his quest, things only happen to him, not because of him. Santiago gains insight-big deal. One reviewer from Santa Clara wrote "I am a self professed evangelist of the book since I've read it. Absolutely love it's lessons without the "preachy" feel, and love the fact that the situations are those which every one of us can relate to - though all may not recognize them as they happen to us." I read the book because of that review...I wish I could get together with this person and discuss that. Lessons learned in the Alchemist are learned on stand-bye, they are not learned from experience. That's no way to grow in life.

Reading this masterpiece our hearts are filled with optimism and we are provided with the courage, required to reach our aim in life.
Written in a very simple and thus clear language, "The Alchemist" tries to open our eyes and our souls to the most important message in the world:
Follow your own path, without being discouraged by the opinions of other people and obstacles you may be confronted with, for it is promised, that if you don't deceive yourself by denying the gentle whispering of your heart, your spirit will be strenghtened and you will be no longer controlled by fate but in charge of it.
Unfortunately we often refuse to take the chances given in life because we are afraid of a possible failure. Instead we prefer to adapt to the daily routine of our "only too busy" social life, trying desperately to please others by satisfying their expectations. Our own dreams and hopes seem to be long forgotten and thus unfulfilled.
This book represents the first step to overcome the limitations we impose on ourselves.
Accompaning Santiago - an Andalusian shepherd boy - on his quest for a treasure, hidden somewhere near the Great Pyramids of Egypt, we learn how to put all doubts aside in order to remain on the path of hope, which leads in the end to the fulfilment of our life.
Thus I can only redommend: read this book and discover your own destiny!

... unfortunately the original bits aren't inspiring and the inspiring bits aren't original. (Ok, OK, if Coelho can rip ideas off why can't I?).
This I-Spy book of philosophy is nothing more than 10th rate, watered down Voltaire. For Santiago, read Candide and you'll get some idea of where Coelho's influences came from. If you have not already read Candide or Micromégas, then you may find a spark or two of inspiration within The Alchemist, as Coelho does pull the right string occasionally, making the reader ponder where life is taking them and the essential power each of us possesses to change things. Admirable stuff indeed! When, however one recognises how dirivative and inferior Coelho's writings are, the message becomes tainted, insubstantial and ultimately worthless.
By all means click to register your disapproval of my little review, but please, try Voltaire's Candide, either in the original version (if your french is up to it) or in one of the excellent english translations available, and experience the wisdom and humour of a true master who genuinely understood life's great comedy. Coelho falls far short of those he seeks so desperately to emulate.
