Books usually revolve around a piece of information that you take away (THE FISH). This book didn't just give me a fish, it gave me a FISHING ROD to catch many fish. Its gave me unique way to think and analyze but i still need to practice it. I was surprised how informative yet fun it was to read, i picked this book at random from amazon to read on Gamification and i am so happy i bought it. It is life changing

I am working on a startup where product design is key. Having heard about gamification I started to look for material on the web but didn't find anything really helpful – in regard to deep understanding and applicability – until I saw Yu-kai Chou's TEDx talk and then reading his book.

This book teaches gamification in an excellent way. If you don't read it you miss out on a chance to get from zero to advanced in the most efficient and entertaining way.

So far the best gamification book, far beyond basic points, leaderboards and badges, but more practical and caring more about psychological background with a lot of real life examples.
I've read more than 10 books about this topic, but this one is outstanding, because you can apply his suggested techniques.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic manual. 10. Oktober 2015
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I don't normally write reviews, but I bought this book and I absolutely adore it.

I am an educator who wanted to try to revitalize his classroom. I had bought a few books about gamification, and "Actionable Gamification" stood out fast and far. The other books I got were vague and not helpful. Chou's book gives evidence, cites sources, and lists tangible ways to gamify any project you might be working on. It reads like a how-to manual, rather than some worthlessly optimistic, airy theoretical text.

Chou begins by explaining that there are 8 useful motivating forces, or reasons anyone does anything at all; which Chou calls "Core Drives." Each chapter after this point focuses specifically on one of these forces, how you can use them to your advantage in your projects, and how, if abused, they can be a detriment to your project. He then lists several techniques for that core drive, wraps up the chapter with a thought exercise and a tie in to his website, and moves on to the next core drive.

The book is incredibly easy to understand, well paced, and fun to read. I am excited to use what I learned in this book to go make lesson plans. :)

5.0 von 5 Sternen A must-read book for anyone interested in gamification or serious games 27. Oktober 2015
Von Warren Smith - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Yu-Kai Chou has condensed years of experience in gamification into this book.

This experience allowed him to develop the Octalysis framework which helps gamification designers identify core drivers in their intended audience and use related game mechanics to appeal to these effectively. In the book, he demonstrates that his ideas aren't just based on personal experience, but relates them to various other concepts and experiences in psychology, behavioral economics...

The resulting model is very effective in covering the different intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors that underlies the people's behavior in various situations, thereby providing great insights for anyone designing games or intending to gamify any real-world situation.

5.0 von 5 Sternen None like this one 24. August 2016

Coined in 2002, Gamification became a buzzword and has been the subject of a number of books in the last few years. None like this one, however. Yu-kai has created a clear framework for understanding and using Gamification in both your personal and professional life. His 8 Core Drives are well thought out and make a lot of sense. There are dozens of fantastic, real-life examples he shares to explain his concepts. Easy, entertaining read that could change how you think and act.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best money I've spent all year so far 12. Mai 2015

I'm still not even all the way through but I've gained so, so much from this book. Yu-kai Chou is the absolute EXPERT on this topic and also has led an interesting life in general. His passion for gamification and how real people can use it emanates from every page, and the Octalysis framework is possibly the most interesting and detailed system I've ever read about, on any topic, ever. (And I studied physics, computer science, and business in college!)

As a marketer, copywriter, and storyteller who has basically "heard it all" in terms of psychological triggers, this book continues to astound me and help me level up (pun intended) my mastery of so many functions of my daily work—creating, selling, publishing, and more. Highly recommended.

3.0 von 5 Sternen The Diet Version would be Better 21. Mai 2016
Von Celeste Eve - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I think this book has a lot of great ideas to offer. There are useful categories and vocabulary for thinking about video game studies. I purchased this book as part of a video game class I took. The book did provide interesting ideas to discuss but there are some issues. First, the book needed an editor. There are many spelling issues as well as areas that could be cut down. The book tends to go on and on when it could be shortened. The author also inserts himself into the book to the point of distraction. The book does match form and content and attempts to blend digital, gaming, and traditional reading habits together. If the book were trimmed down to just the useful material it would be a more enjoyable read.
