500 Rezepte klingen erst sehr viel, aber eigentlich sind die meisten Rezepte nur eine Abwandlung vom Grundrezept, zB statt Äpfel Birnen nehmen und schon zählt es zu einem weiteren Rezept, deshalb bekommt es von mir einen Stern abzug. Aber alles in allem sind es super Rezepte und die Abwandlungen machen Ideen für Neues.
I had assumed that this book would contain 500 recipes of pies and tarts but that is not the case. There are many recipes, true, but then many recipes are just slight variation on the existing recipes and many recipes don't have a photo, or maybe by far don't have a photo, which I find rather annoying because not only the photo inspires me but it also shows me what the authors mean the finished product should look like. Sometimes I don't follow their suggestion as to how to present a dish but it is always good to see what they made of it. I also have the feeling that many of the variations are just are made up by someone at a desk who was told to come up with more recipes and who just thought that if a recipe was nice with strawberries it would equally be nice with peaches, blueberries, pineapple, etc. How do I know that? First because many are just slight variation, sometimes only making use of other types of pastry they give the recipe of, or just exchanging cinnamon for vanilla, etc, but also because in the savoury recipes, for example, they add ingredients, meaning that you will end up with far too much filling, therefore.. no one tried them out! That is my reason for giving this book three stars. I am not saying that some of the recipes won't be rather nice, or even delicious... what I am saying is that this is shabby editing and I hate that. i much prefer someone like Nigella Lawson, who really tries out the recipes, than some editor who sells books cheap because all the recipes are made up behind a desk. I wouldn't even put it past some of these modern editors to sit down with an existing book, change something to the recipes and publish them as being original ones. We already had fast food, now we also have fast cook books. I am passionate about cooking and about cook books, so I hope one day such things will be re-thought and we will maybe pay a bit more but will buy cook books that will inspire us rather than make us throw ingredients away after wasting our time, frustrated, in the kitchen!
