What most people don't know is that today there are powerful software programs that take the drudgery out of copyediting and proofreading. Many of these programs are free or affordable. In Beyond Spell Check, author, psychologist and freelance writer/editor Terry Erle Clayton introduces those programs plus how you develop an ‘editing mindset’, the multiple passes approach, and a dozen other tools and techniques used by professional copyeditors. If you work with an in-house editor or can afford to hire one, the final chapter offers guidelines on how to hire and work with a professional editor and what to pay.

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Terry Erle Clayton's book is different, as evidenced by my new favorite phrase from his book, "pushing mud through a hose."
His latest book tackles the critical process of editing, the unsung hero of writing good text. My favorite takeaway is the tip on using technology to read text aloud as part of proofreading. Although the book is mostly about upping one’s editing game, he also bravely enters the Oxford Comma Wars. (No spoilers here!)
This is such a practical, accessible resource I bought the extra copy for a young writer in my family. I only wish this book had been around long ago – it would have made writing my dissertation process less painful.
