Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism Hardcover – 23 Mar. 2021
Longlisted for the 2021 Porchlight Business Book Awards, Big Ideas & New Perspectives
“She offers something both broad and scarce: a compelling new story about how to create a desirable future.”—New York Times
An award-winning author and leading international economist delivers a hard-hitting and much needed critique of modern capitalism in which she argues that, to solve the massive crises facing us, we must be innovative—we must use collaborative, mission-oriented thinking while also bringing a stakeholder view of public private partnerships which means not only taking risks together but also sharing the rewards.
Capitalism is in crisis. The rich have gotten richer—the 1 percent, those with more than $1 million, own 44 percent of the world's wealth—while climate change is transforming—and in some cases wiping out—life on the planet. We are plagued by crises threatening our lives, and this situation is unsustainable. But how do we fix these problems decades in the making?
Mission Economy looks at the grand challenges facing us in a radically new way. Global warming, pollution, dementia, obesity, gun violence, mobility—these environmental, health, and social dilemmas are huge, complex, and have no simple solutions. Mariana Mazzucato argues we need to think bigger and mobilize our resources in a way that is as bold as inspirational as the moon landing—this time to the most ‘wicked’ social problems of our time.. We can only begin to find answers if we fundamentally restructure capitalism to make it inclusive, sustainable, and driven by innovation that tackles concrete problems from the digital divide, to health pandemics, to our polluted cities. That means changing government tools and culture, creating new markers of corporate governance, and ensuring that corporations, society, and the government coalesce to share a common goal.
We did it to go to the moon. We can do it again to fix our problems and improve the lives of every one of us. We simply can no longer afford not to.

- Reviewed in Germany on 11 July 2021Therefore we need organizations that want more than profits. Mazzucato describes the needs and sketches out the solution for such organizations. Being a political economist, she focuses on the collaboration between the state and economies, not unlike the activist state in F.D. Roosevelt's New Deal, Kennedy's Apollo Project, the Singapore Model, and the directed Chinese economy. Her work is especially interesting as it has found its way into the EU. The EU has selected Missions and funding while working with the author.
I can see while some critics expected more from this book. However, for the reader not versed in Mazzucato’s s work, this book is a practical, agreeable vision of how the economy of the (predominately) ecological age should be. Though the changes will properly go deeper than Mazzucato dares to describe, I think.

- Reviewed in Germany on 6 May 2021This book is basically stating her point again that the government should make innovative investments. However, to me it appears that she was just trying to make some money out of these 212 repetitive pages. She touches so superficially on all kind of issues, that I just felt utterly bored. Over and over again she brings up the moon landing that was the ground for some many subsequent inventions. Very interesting but no reason to repeat that 10 times in 212 pages. Let’s face it Mariana you were just trying to fill pages with worthless content. Moreover, her main mission model was nothing but abstract to me, she is just trying to model something as complex as the moon landing into a simplified project. I don’t see any reason to buy this book, just watch one of her promo interviews and you got everything you need to know

I am not an economist and don't know much about economics. Besides I'm not an English native speaker.
Still I could follow Mazzuccato's points
My impression is that this book is directed both at specialists of the field and laypeople.
And I assume this was Mazzuccato's main difficulty, to be able to engage both.
In my case she was successful., though occasionally a bit repetitive in my opinion
I want to give this book 5 stars if only for the hope that it can inspire in a world where it's difficult to find a sense of direction .
I suppose specialists can follow up on Mazzuccato's ideas by exploring the many notes at the end of the book.
RexReviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 20215.0 out of 5 stars Simply an outstanding read and worth every penny!
This tops her two previous books with a direct and insightful analysis of the current crisis affecting the world, and a proposal for recovery. The impact of progressively inadequate political actions and their increasing reluctance to control a value extracting financial sector as it bleeds cash from necessary and vital areas are faced with a clear sense of the way ahead that everyone should read and understand. If we take up the challenge Mariana Mazzucato provides we can feel more comfortable about a future for our children and the planet. Deeply impressive and the work of a true master of their subject.
jarrattReviewed in the United States on 14 February 20225.0 out of 5 stars The book I"ve been yearning for
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI so disliked writing a so-so (or, worse review) for Dr. Mazzucato's last book on Value. It is an accomplished academic work that deserves an audience among economists. For a layperson seeking an author's insight, it was lacking.
The Entrepreneurial State (2015) is one of the most important books I've ever read. I found its insights compelling. Mission Economy (this book) is where Mariana Mazzucato puts a fearsome stake in the ground and gives us a clear and succinct path through which capitalism can be revitalized to serve humanity and the planet.
The author has the stature to take on the vital issue of what's wrong with letting bankers and 1%ers run the economy. This is not a screed. Dr. Mazzucato has paid a lot of dues in the transformation trenches. I join her in believing that the remedies she prescribes are possible.
I bought a second copy to give to my public library. I may buy more!
Victor CasillasReviewed in Mexico on 9 June 20225.0 out of 5 stars Time to board the ship to save the world and reinvent capitalism
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is a must read for everyone interested, not only in the economy and the role of public and private sectors acting together, but in making way for the new world to come, and shape the new institutions that must emerge for this new era.
Mariana Mazzucato has layed down a vision that is more than necessary in this turbulent times, imminent to shape the future, creating synergies between public and private sectors, just as humanity has done before during the space race, but now what's at stake is the survival of the planet and, of course, mankind.
This book is not only about innovation, but about survival, a sort of user's manual to act together to tackle humanity's greatest challenges and survive to tell new stories.
A must read by an award winning author who knows what she is talking about. So if you think we can do better and that we must act now, read the book and see you on the new world!
