I saw this film several times on the big screen (a Technirama 70-mm print!) when I was a teenager and loved it from Day 1. I searched the internet for years trying to find a DVD, legal or illegal, but couldn't find a disc worth watching.
Now, I finally have a DVD worth watching, and what a pleasure it has been! I've viewed it serveral times so far, and, will no doubt, enjoy it for years to come. The DVD isn't perfect (about 90% resolution & tonality of a proper re-mastered release), but it's great to see this film in its original 2.35:1 widescreen presentation again! The only thing that I miss, dare I say it?, is the voice-over in the American version because it created a certain eerie, disembodied atmosphere to the film, but I'm not complaining -I love it just the same! This is, undoubtedly, the very BEST issue of this beautiful vampire film, to date, and probably the best that we're likely to see of this sorely neglected masterpiece (Claude Renoir's cinematography is in a class of its own). This is the most stylish horror film ever made, in my opinion.
Thank you, FILMCLUB for making this DVD of BLOOD & ROSES available!
