Another Successful Lonely Planet Guide
We recently travelled in Portugal using this guide as our sole source of information. As always, the Lonely Planet series steers independent travelers to the finest little-known places. Maps, evaluations, and descriptions are all excellent and easy to find at a glance. We never travel without the Lonely Planet guides, and found this one excellent as usual.

I kept on thinking I should have brought another book
The print was so small that we needed a magnefying glass and the description of several of the sites, restaurants and accomodations in Portugal were a little off. All the information they wrote about was available for free at any tourist information desk. The maps were illegible. All the time I was in Portugal using this book, I kept on thinking I should have gotten...

i just returned from a four week independent travel trip to portugal, and because i had two other guides with me, i can state: the lonely planet portugal guide is the best guide there is if you want to travel by yourself and off the beaten track. it proofed to be reliable, inspiring and very helpful for going to remoter places as well as for lisbon. i don't know where the reader from new york picked up his or her information "for free": i found the turismo in portugal usually at best a place to find out about bus time tables... of course the "in-clubs" might be different ones than at the time of writing the guide, and of course it is always a plus if you have a local friend who can show you things that are not in the book. but you have to meet them first, and even after i had the lonely planet was extremely helpful to make my trip a wonderful experience.

Beste Entscheidung!!, 24. September 2005
In diesem Buch passt wirklich (bis auf Kleinigkeiten)alles. Es gibt wirklich nichts, was man in diesem Buch nicht findet und selbst die kleinen Karten sind besser als alles was man vor Ort erhält. Bosonders zu erwähnen sind die Empfehlungpen der Autorin was das Nachtleben betrifft (umbedingt ins LUX in Lisabon und ins Solar do Vino do Porto in Porto schauen!

Useful maps, 20. September 2002
This handbook is a little too thick and therefore too heavy to carry it along for hours. The maps are not pretty, but they serve well - and there are maps that aren't printed in any other guide. BUT: you don't have a clue how to get into the town - the maps are center-only! So park your car somehow, cut out the map and being happy to have found the position where you are now you don't have any problems to navigate by foot. If you don't know where you are, get into the car and get orientation first!
O.K., there is a lot of information that you can fetch from the tourist office (see above, the 1-star-recension), but do you have the time to get there at opening hours?
It is not a real backpacker guide, because it has more information about the touristic centers than of the wild side of Portugal. Ceck itout by yourself! Therefore you can pick ANY guide for the Algarve or Lisboa, it doesn't really matter. Perhaps you get a lot more pictures ;-)
The book is o.K., but it is not the ONLY one.

if you go there, you need a good travelguide!!!, 11. Mai 2002
I just came back from Portugal and I recognized travelling in Portugal is a really hard job. You always need a long time to get English information.
I went there without a travelguide and there was no other way as to buy a travelguide, and I first bought the <Let's Go> . I got to know how helpfull the lonely planet is by being unlucky with the other one.
Don't miss Lisbon if you go there and enjoy your informed time.

All the time I was in Portugal using this book, I kept on thinking I should have gotten another book. I brought this book because I saw the Lonely Planet show on the Travel Channel on Portugal. I though it was great, unfortunately the book wasn't as great. I'll never buy a Lonely Planet travel guide again.
