5.0 von 5 Sternen The Mariner as the spitting image of doubt
I've just stumbled into "The Rhyme" by hearing an Heavy Metal song (Iron Maiden's Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner), it's not much of an approach to British Classical Poetry but it was a beginning. I'd really liked the strieving of the poor man that lived on a tragedy like the death of his mates, and all for his own fault. The obvious drift to everyday life's doubt...

3.0 von 5 Sternen Very lovely book.
This book is a great addition to anyone's collection of ornamental coffee table books. Huzzah to Paul Fry for this stunning critico-philosophical achievement! He has completely outdone himself! His reputation as a great Yale school critic is sealed with the completion of this marvellous tome, perfect for that special gift.

Coming next: Paul Fry will edit a fancy...

The obvious drift to everyday life's doubt is clear, I still have to understand the bird's meaning.. I didn't liked the Italian translation so I've re-written it in Italian, with a lot of effort, it's strange how it resembles Dante's Divina Comedia, it has all the same features, God, The Evil, Death, Blood, Sweat and Tears. At the end of the day a pleasant companion for your sleepless night, Thank you Sam !

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Beautiful Bargain, 12. April 2000
Von Ein Kunde
This is an incredible book, a collaboration, really, featuring reproductions of the wood engravings that were created by Gustave Dore in 1875, inspired by this epic poem by Samuel Coleridge. (the editorial reviews are confusing, because they describe books by different artists) There are 42 magnificent illustrations, on 9 x 12 pages no less, for just six bucks and change. You won't find a better bargain here.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Sensational Literary Experience Beyond Compare, 29. Februar 2000
Von Daniel G. Snethen (Colome, SD USA) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
(REAL NAME)
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the single greatest piece of literature I have ever read. The morals it teaches are deeper than those of Aesop's fables and as far reaching as the Genesis account of the Bible. The language though somewhat archaic is magical and extremely lyrical. Poetry is meant to be heard rather than read and when one hears the words of this poem one cannot help but be moved and entirely engrossed by the pure essence of the poem. This poem exhibits many elements of horror and the supernatural and can be enjoyed along these lines as well.

It is an ancient Mariner, And he stoppeth one of three. "By thy long grey beard and glittering eye, Now wherefore stopp'st thou me?

As one begins to read or listen to "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", one cannot help but become the wedding-guest. It is almost as though the reader or listener of the poem has been stopped by the ancient one's glittering eye. When the wedding guest replies:

"Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!"

it is as if we are the one's making this reply, thus becoming the wedding guest and as such, we now become a part of the poem ourself and the poem becomes a part of us. We feel the ancient mariner's struggle as did the wedding guest and actually come away from the experience a sadder and a wiser person. The revelation of self and ones shortcomings is that which makes us sadder and the fact that we most likely had never contemplated such things prior to our encounter with this wizened sailor of yore makes us much wiser. This particular edition has been illustrated by 42 wood engravings of Gustave Dore. The lyrical quality of this masterpiece is only enhanced by the intricate artistry of Gustave Dore. Only a literary masterpiece of this caliber deserves such exquisite illustration. Truly, this is a volume to be treasured for a lifetime.

5.0 von 5 Sternen "Water, water everywhere..., 16. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
And all the boards did shrink. Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink." These famous lines, like the opening lines of Coleridge's Kubla Khan, are often quoted, but I sometimes wonder if the people who quote them have read this wonderful poem. The poem is full of mystery and horror, from the Mariner stopping the wedding guest, to the incident w/ the albatros, to the gambling of Death and Death-In-Life... I could go on and on. The language is so rich, and the poet's comments make the content more clear for anyone who becomes confused. The illustrations of this edition are beautiful and definately complement the text. This is a haunting poem that you will want to read again and again. If you have not read it before, do yourself a favor and find a copy.
