Poe Starter Kit
Any young student of Poe might do well to own this book. Granted, bigger volumes can be found, but this brings to print some of his major works. Start with this one, then buy "Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe..." and learn something about the person he was. Read about first as a poet and author here, avoiding all the fluff about horror in his life. This book is the worst book by Poe I've ever read!
This book was truely awful! Not only did it leave out some of Poe's best works, the format was confusing and irratating. My pet worm won't even stand it! And he eats dirt.

"The Raven" is a love story, not a scary poem. The poet is lamenting a love lost to death, not creating a creepy tale about a talking bird. "The Tell-Tale Heart" is about the foolishness of crime and criminals, not a murder mystery. Read the best of Poe, and then buy a full set of his poems, stories, letters and criticisms. Fascinating stuff.

fantastisch, 27. Januar 2003

The perfect introduction to an American master, 10. Mai 2000
This writing opens the door to another land. Poe's imagination, creativity, and insight flow through these pages in a way rarely achieved by any other author. It is unfortunate that so many associate Poe only with horror and tortured genius. His works should be savored individually; while at the same time estimated as a whole. With that view in mind I recommend this book wholeheartedly and declare its author one of the greatest of all time.

It's Poe. You'd better dig that., 4. April 2000
When it comes to classic, ancient literature, few beat Poe, the man credited with creating science fiction (though his was more of a speculative fiction) and the modern detective story (with Murders in the Rue Morgue). Two creations to be proud of. And while authors like Hemmingway and Fitzgerald are often called dated, in a hundred years Poe will still be Poe. They're still effective as anything written today. Although they might not horrify the modern horror readers. Not that Poe was all about horrifying you anyways. I think people get the wrong idea of Poe. Thinking his writings to be all gory and morbid. Reading his work (especially his poems)he seems to be filled with more sadness than madness. And sometimes hope shines through his hoplessness. He's actually a pretty diverse artist of words. There are various collections of Poe, and this one is good as any (and as a plus, it has a jazzy cover). There are various stories and poems that are alone worth the price.

There is a World Here, 24. April 2000
I am not saying that you have to believe everything that is contained in this book. Some people might find certain things too frightening to believe however historically accurate an account might be, and Poe has been charged with a number of hoaxes which presented literature in a magazine that had pretenses of reporting on actual events. My normal method of study is with a concordance, so that I can see how an author uses particular terms, and I would have no idea where to look to see if Poe ever used the word "horsefeathers." Nevertheless, in the field of thought which is most interesting to me, best summarized as ways of being deadly, Poe is the American intellectual figure who towers above all the rest. Hardly anyone else should even dare to recite a line from an outstanding poem, "Ulalume~A Ballad" which simply says, "Our talk had been serious and sober." Poetic science begins with the ability to find that line in this book.

Wonderful collection of Poe's work, 25. Mai 2000
For anyone who likes Poe, or wants to be introduced to his work, this is the book. The book does an excellent job of picking Poe's writings to show the breadth and depth of his ability and imagination. This book demonstrates that Poe is one of the greatest authors of all time.

"Ah, distinctly I remember...", 25. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Poe was a true master. As a poet myself, I revere him. He is timeless, and his work shall continue to write itself into the fabric of history and our conscience. Even beyond "The Raven"...
